  • not bad, certain bamboos are as hard or harder than the average bones o_o

  • eeet ooaaaahhh!

  • 0:39 "One cut, one kill. Legend or fact?"

Indeed, you can kill someone even with a single puncture with a rapier. It's the swordsman who kills, not a piece of sharp tempered steel. Of course can a single cut be fatal. There are actually no mysteries and no secrets.

  • ur the guy who nearly got killed by sensei XD

  • Good thing you edited out that weird yankee poser who's shouting something like BIATCH BIATCH all the time :-D

  • battou

  • I still like western swords more.

  • I think I've seen test-cutting with western style swords that imply they could cut just as well as a katana, hence it is pretty much a matter of taste. Me? I like both nihonto as well as western varieties. Why choose, use whatever is to hand... :)

  • kinda true i think though that the katana is more light weight and sharp while the other performs not as much of a clean cut, it rips as well... but i agree, both pretty much kill, thats what youre looking for...

  • wasnt it on mythbusters. they tested katanas viking swords and claymores/

  • Actually, armor did stop katanas very well. Check it out on the ultimate warrior, Viking vs. Samuari. Samuari wins by shooting the poor viking with a bow, but they do a katana on chainmail test during the episode. It actually couldnt cut through the stuff, although im sure getting whacked by a piece of metal is going to hurt.

  • the thrust would go through but i agree that the slash doesnt do much against the chainmail

  • not on lock n load with r lee ermey

  • the most beautiful and most balanced edged weapon in the world.....

  • looked like he wanted to give you a haircut

  • The Katana can be stopped right in it's tracks by a little piece of iron age armour called CHANEMAIL... so much for deadliest weapon.

  • EEE! OHH! weird kiai XD

  • So what do you know. "Tatsu" from the TNMT flicks actually is a master swordsman...wow.

  • Oh, Mike. You died.

  • Why would he need to put that sword as guy's head after cutting bamboo? Anyway, kudos to Toshishiro.

  • Sweet.

  • this video has the wrong title

  • many people forget that style defeats the opponent and if a samurai went against most other warriors of the age.....he'd probably make mince meat of them.

  • in japan, samurai swords had marks etched into the blade showing what part of the body that sword could sever or decapitate (idk how 2 spell). They would either use these type of figures (bamboo and rice thing) to test or they would hack at a human and then see

  • I REMEMBER THIS ONE!!

  • great stuff, this. I'm looking for the DVD of this episode of Fight Science. All I've been able to find is one with mixed martial arts. Do you know if this can be bought yet? Thanks!

  • I liked this show allot sad about the show off guy though glad you left him out of the video! thx ^^

  • Is the Sensei Shredders buddy from the Ninja Turtles?

  • lol If I were that guy at 2:28 i'd be shitting myself

  • I'd be interested in finding out how the Katana compares against other swords like the cavalry sabre, the hand-n-half, the Grosse Messer and even the Caymore. Is it truly the ultimate sword?

  • Not necessarily ultimate, as ultimate can be very subjective. It is, however, one of the most balanced cutting weapons out there. A lot of people praise it for its beauty through meticulous forging.

  • holy deep shit.......

the katana is the ultimate weapon, it cuts so easily

  • friggin' blade of death...that sword is damn awesome

  • It's not just the blade, the average guy could swing the world's greatest sword and still wouldn't be able to reproduce that kind of devastation.

  • What devastation do you speak of? All I saw was a martial arts master slicing up inanimate objects in a controlled environment.

  • i couldnt agree more

  • That's not entirely true. Even a child could kill someone if they had a blade. The technique might be poor but you only need to cut a few inches into a person to start seriously damaging organs.

  • Hey mikeshu. Good job. You didn't even flinch when master almost drove that sword into your head.

  • If anyone can answer this for me, how many and what kind of styles are there for the katana martial arts?

  • well, at least 100 diffrent schools of swordsmanship, but that is a rough estimate. It would take a very long time to count ALL the schools. In Japan alone there are at least 100, while some were made in other countries, such as the USA and Spain.

  • Killing 2 people in one move......

    atleast maiming.

  • did he tried to slice his student's head?if he will do that i will swipe the sword using the bamboo

  • lol 1:47 voice cracks

  • I'm sorry, but I just can't take any martial art seriously that sounds like you're having a bowel movment after every strike.

  • sexy party

  • always some fat white guy

  • I have to say that the katana is one of the coolest yet simplest looking weapon ever. One look at it and you wouldn't expect it capable of taking an arm or head off. I just think that's cool.

  • If i had to samura sword fight toshiro, i would throw my sword at him and run for my life.

  • what came first kendo or shin kendo?

  • shinkendo is a new art. Kendo is a general name given to the contact martial art/sport derived from swordsmanship. A little research will give a more detailed answer. Google.

  • lol 2:25 - 2:29

  • I don't understand why he got thumbs down for this.. I am a shodan in kendo, and I went to Nationals last year. And I agree with him because its true, from what I have read and heard the Korean culture (after the occupation of Japan) took what they had been taught by the Japanese and claimed it as theirs. That is because of how the Japanese wiped out whatever history the Koreans had. Korean sword fighting involved a shield and a broad sword..

  • thats false korea hes there own martial arts but som like kendo is directly taken from japan

  • hmmm maybe you should read the book "the state of the art of taekwondo" then you would see how wrong you are =p

  • nationals? in america i guess? dont talk about martial arts someone like u could never understand

  • Obata sensei is a legend.... truly a master of kobudo

  • whats shit-kendo?

  • the kinda shit that would decapitate you

  • Weird Tae Kwon Do guy? XDXD

Very nice, thanks for the upload.

A question though, do you think you'll beat him fi you both have Katanas?

  • the legend are true!!! LOOL

  • What style of iai does Obata sensei do?

  • Not iaido, his cumulative knowledge of a bunch of koryu kenjutsu boiled down into his gendai art form Shinkendo.

He did a lot of Nakamura Toyama Ryu, Shinkage, etc. Iaido wasn't as much of an influence on him.

  • I think i can cut things with a katana and be filmed

  • Hm, watching Japanese masters of different martial arts (mostly kendo) I've noticed the gap that exists between us westerners and those masters.

Not even my western masters could compare with the japanese ones.

Watching this video and others that are with westerners there seems to be something more "natural" when the japanese do it. A pity, really.

  • Maybe westerners focus too much on brute strength?

  • no question about that. They think of how much damage they can do, not how they can nuetralize and sometimes kill opponents with simple, concise blows.

  • Maybe. All western martial arts (they exist, they're just... different from the eastern) are somewhat dependent on strength.

But why would westerners do that? I mean, it can't be that hard to imitate and surpass the japanese from time to time. I mean, we're all human... Still, a western team has never won the Kendo world-championship (or ever been close to).

It's a bit of a bummer. I'd like to surpass my sensei someday. =)

  • Th Westerners dont understand that the blade does most of the work. I for a fact start kendo soon yet kendo doesnt need strength. Its technique and your form that does the job.

  • What do you mean by that?

  • Maybe. But is it believable that that is applicable for a whole culture?

    Maybe it is. I dunno.

  • Yeah, I find it somewhat awkward when a westerner does it

  • no offense wat so ever. but what is the purpose of the loud noises with every hit? 2 build addrenaline or sumtin?

  • I guess you never took martial arts?

  • For a guy who's never done martial arts he isnt far off the mark. Someone should answer his question.

The noises help project your Qi (pronounced: chee), which is kind of like your soul/spirit. They also get your muscles working more efficiently; its the same reason why you breathe out when you lift weights or do pushups. It can also be used to intimidate and distract an opponent.

  • for all martial arts breathing is essential making loud noises as you put it assures your breathing, But some martial artists do this to intimidate there opponents try screaming at someone as loud as you can from your belly to your throat and they will most likely tense up. if that happened in a sword fight your reaction speed would be far less causing problems.

  • 1 it helps to focus

2 strain some muscles and also helps to cut correctly

3 to frighten the enemy (in this case the enemy is bamboo)

4 in practice it gives a rhythm, and you can hear where are your mates, so you can't be hit with a bokken/bokuto by accident

  • bare hands if they wanted :P

but seriously, samurai were and still are VERY highly trained and in sword skill not many come close to matching a samurai master

    but i agree...ninjas are better...xD

  • ninjas use deception to win fights... samurai use skill enough said

  • you nearly got took out!

  • im glad u edited out that Taekwondo dude, watching him made me cringe.

  • Dude! Everyone there is soo f ing cool!!

  • what about chopping his head off?

    lol

  • are u the guy that the fat guy almost killed?

  • He may be round but please don't refer to my sword master Obata Toshishiro Kaiso as "the fat guy"

  • Oh yeah, he's now 60 years old and can still do cartwheels, walk on his hands, and cut through thick bamboo like butter. 'Nuff said?

  • who cares? he almost pwned u @ 2:26

  • I consider it an honor that he personally pwns me.

  • I wish we could give you a thumbs up for that

  • ahahaha yes indeed that was total pwnage

  • what a question..killing with one strike with a sword, could that be true?...

  • u could kill some1 wit a butterknife with 1 strike

  • yeah i think it could be possible

  • 1:50 RAPEAGE

  • wats with the lisp?

  • Props to you for not shitting your pants, or at least flinching, when he came to within inches of your head with that blade. That involves a lot of trust

  • Katana is the best weapon in the world. Katana kicks ass. If that kind of sword touch you ... you're dead. Trust me.

  • and if you touched me with that sword you have no experience you probly will thrust at with a slashing sword and no damage would be done because...i know wushu :)

  • you watch to much anime homie..

  • they totally used after effects for this

  • I have to say that intro was really cool though.

  • thank god you edited out that ozzie XMA guy hacking into the ballistic gel - it was a let down to see it after watching master obata in action

  • Mikeshu, thankyou for editing out Bren that TKD guy, his was an embarrassing display of how not to use a daito! Why didnt Obata sensei do the ballistics gel test cut?

  • You're welcome. Sensei thought cutting the gel torso would put the Shinkendo art in a negative light, something he wishes Japanese swordsmanship would get less of in general.

  • Indeed. It seemed he thought it was a chinese dao, twirling it around his neck like that. He was lucky he didn't cut his neck open.

  • I see. I was wondering the same and it makes very much sense. Although I would have liked to see his technique on the closest thing to human, I think he made the right choice. I have a question... At the hobu dojo, does Obata sensei make frequent apearences and instruct class personally? My old sensei at TKD (( embarrassing parent-made choice at 7 years old )) never once even came to visit... Only showed for ranking tests. I would like to attend a seminar but I don't drive and I live in Burbank.

  • Obata Kaiso, the founder of our art, teaches 7 days a week. The only vacations he takes are when the building owner shuts it down for holidays. Otherwise, if people wanted to train on Thanksgiving, he would train on Thanksgiving.

His dedication to teaching already speaks abundantly about him.

  • that tkd guy is a embarrassment to the style

  • sooooooooooo coooooooooooooooool!!!!!

  • He really is!!!!! lol

  • sensei obata was tatsu in the ninja turtles movies.

  • I KNEW THAT WAS THE DUDE FROM TMNT

  • EY OOHHHHHH

  • demonninja, its not on tv anymore. it WAS at one time, but they only showed it a couple times. I wish it was still airing as well :(

  • I just saw it about a week or two ago on nat geo

  • Wow, talk about perfect union between sword and wielder. His focus was incredible, and the blade must have been hand forged by a master smith. If this clip was from a TV show, could anyone tell me if it's still on the air?

  • Read the description next time, DemonNinja93.

  • Would like to see Obata sensei's helmet splitting.

  • It looks simple to do, but to get such a clean and exact cut all the way through like that is incredibly difficult. Let alone do it numerous times in succession.

  • this was one of the saving scenes from the series....the rest was pretty pathetic with the baton twirling

  • japanese cusine anyone

  • Haha. This show is about contributing to oriental mystique. "Ohhhh, in japan they make living swords that can cut thru... a human shaped mold made of gel..."

As if any other sharp and long piece of metal were inferior...

  • You may have missed the point, that it was so caled "balistic gel", the stuf udes to imitate flesh for testing fireweapons in the real scientific way. So I doubt, that any other "sharp and long piece of matal" would archieve the same.

  • Flesh, yes, but what about sinew, bone and organs?

  • the swords are not magical, but they are FAR better made than any others of the time.. save perhapse Damascus.. (i AM a blacksmith, and i do know and have experienced the difference) its not a living sword, but looking from an artistic standpoint, the smith does pour a lot of his heart and soul into the making of it.. aside from that, i have watched demonstrations.. the Katana does cut noticably better than any other sword ive seen

  • After a few weeks of casual studying, I've noticed damascus katana's being sold yet never detailed on any buyers guides. Is it better than folded high carbon steel? I don't mean to doubt you but some citations would be helpful as well.

  • Most swords these days are "factory made" I called it that because it seems liked it was made for fashion rather than its really intended. If you want a real one that won't bend so easily get a folded one, its stronger but I would want to learn how to polish it so it won't get rusted.

  • same mate, mine rusted after slashing bushes and trees ;p

  • And they cost (depending on quality) at least $20,000 for a really good, folded one...

But it would be great to be able to actually practice with one. It's not the same when working with substitutes.

But it is a requirement to have a sharp blade for 2Dan Iaido, so... One day...

Back to point, yeah, they do require a lot of maintenance...

  • I agree with you on this one... I could see here in our country these kind of "factory made" swords, slash them on a banana tree and the blade suffers dents, not the tree... The real katanas are really expensive! wish I could get one miself...

  • and the true swordsmith doesn't give his katana to anyone :/

  • i agree too! my grandpa has a shorter sword but its from southern asia and it cuts nicely! ^_^

  • In Redlands CA is a small Asian antiques shop, the owner was the first non Japanese to be granted to right to make katanas the old school way, he was getting about $20k each.

  • Thats not neccessarily true. You can buy a fully functional blade for around AU$400.

  • Damacus steel isnt ever used for a katana because the katana doesnt use that type of metal. Plus most of the so called "damacus blade Katana's" are fake damacus.

  • The Taekwondo guy is weird... but i rally like Shinkendo and Aikido, but in Norway there isn't any offers for many of the japanese sword arts, just some of the empty hand arts

  • the legends are true

  • If teh guy let go of his sword would he be useless? like cant fight?

  • He's actually a master of Aikido and has studied many many empty hand arts. Though his sword school has garnered the most attention.

  • he was one of Shioda Sensei's uchideshi right?

  • depends on what else he knows, jujutsu akido etc

  • All of the above and more of course.

  • omg 1:00 the boy in grey in the movie this is tony jaa xD

  • life is shinkendo :D Obata kasio is awesome:)

  • Toshishiro Obata almost cut your head in half, haha. Nice vid, I love my katana!!!

  • nothing creepy about tamesh or suemono giri

ot tatami omote - its just the same principal as shooting targets with a gun or bow .

BTW - is Obata sensei a student of the late

    nakamura taizaburo ?

  • that is one incredible sword and one bad ass sensei

  • "the Bamboo mimics the density of bone, the Mass the Consistency of Flesh." LOOOOL CREEPY RETARD/ PSYCHOPATH!!

"the two wrapped together like this would be about the consistency of a large arm" CREEEEEPY !!!!

  • Err...what? Are you going to tell me ballistics/crashtest dummies are creepy too? Stay in school, kid. Maybe you'll grow up someday.

  • "in ancient japan a legendary blacksmith is said to have combined peircing slashing and blocking into a Single Mighty Blade." LOOOL

"a true swordsman should end a dual, With a Single Stroke!" LOL!!!!

" about 150 to 200 hundred years ago that became illegal (cutting deceased person or criminals), so it was necessary to find an alternative surfaces to test your swords on that were the equivalent, so that you could evaluate the quality of your blade." LOOOL CREEEPY!!

  • ???whats funny

  • wasn't this guy in the first ninja turtles movie or something?

  • that weird TKD guy you talk about is actually a very good martial artist. Whether or not his style is of your taste, you must give him the respect he deserves.

  • hum. I think national geographic is for slightly retarded people, especially this show. and their photos are for older people who want to be comforted in their simplistic and romantic view of the world, even if some of their photos are quite good and interesting--but the overall vibe is shitty. sry.

  • this comment makes no fucking sense.

you're trying to be smarter than you are

  • I'm not trying to look smart dude. I just feel it's stupid, just like when you listen to someone stupid talking and you're like---oh shit this person is stupid. my impression on N.G. is not based only on this--I've watched plenty of stuff from them, and even though I like science and nature and documentaries, I just get this overall shitty and conservative vibe all the time. Their 'Search for Adam' documentary is especially stupid and pointless, it shows the dodgy culture of their organisation.

  • I can't comment on the actual content being talked about since I don't get cable but I can still see that we have some pretty opinionated and biased comments here.

  • :) I'm not biased, I'm actually a great fan of NG. I like documentaries and I like biology and I think NG is an icon. but the 'Search for Adam' documentary (it's on ytube) is really bad, and actually biased :) it's presenting genealogy from a quite religious point of view, and it's not bringing anything, the facts and comments are random. and I don't know, I feel like this fight science show is for 7 year old kids? what's the point? teaching combat skills? :S I don't think I'm being biased.

  • Well I have to agree with you that Fight Science has a rather Hollywood presentation trying to appeal to the mainstream. That's the first thing that had us raise an eyebrow when us Shinkendo-ka entered the set. Though we were more than happy to give Obata Kaiso some exposure in the mainstream and have some on-camera experience while we're at it.

  • Yep absolutly I also agree with you--Shinkendo is certainly an awesome art and sport, but the way it's presented in this show just doesn't render justice to it I think.

  • Still no match for master yoda :))))

Toshiro Obata rules, I konw him since 1990 for his role in the turtles movie.

But now, we can see other great martial artists in success movies, like keanu reeves in matrix for example :))) -I know "jewjitsu?" -

  • any1 can use a fuckin sword its exactly the same swing as a baseball bat

  • like a baseball bat really you are truly an idiot u really do not know any thing about bushido do you

  • its actually not even close to the same principle

  • it depends on the situation xD

if you where to face an expert at Bushido the most fucked up thing to do is swing it as a baseball bat...

however if you where in a street fight it might work.....

  • your an idiot..i dont think you ever swung a sword before..specially this one you cant cut like a baseball you have to cut in a cross if you see all the cuts their goin downwards

  • Obata Toshishiro or Nathan scott should have been the ones to cut the dummy!!!

  • mikeshu,

When I first saw this episode, it caught my attention that it was the TaeKwonDo guy the one who cut through the "jelly" dummy. Why was he the one to cut the dummy and not the cutting champion? My respect to the TKD guy, but it should've been the other guys.

  • lmao 1:47

  • I don't see why the hype for the Katana is so great. Versus an unarmored opponent the rapier is still the most lethal and effective sword.

Versus an armored opponent the katana doesnt't even come near being the best sword of choice since it lacks sheer weight to its blow. And don't give me that "katanas can cut through steel bullshit".

  • its the skill of the person wielding the weapon...not the weapon itself.

  • Still doesn't answer the question to why the Katana is so hyped about.

  • I think it's mostly hyped by movies and stuff. The Japanese do revere it as a piece of art. Leave it up to Hollywood to make flying ninjas and lightsaber-powered katana

  • It's not the weight of the sword, it's the method of the cut. It looks like chopping, but think of it this way: when you cut bread, do you bring the knife straight down or do you move it like a saw?

It's the same concept, but applied with sword-dynamics. So, in theory, it's very capable of cutting through steel.

But, in the end, the best sword of choice is relative to the person using it.

  • I have to say that my faith in the decency of humanity went down when I read some of the racist and nation vs nation comments on my video's comment thread. I went ahead and deleted them since they have no place being here. People, please keep your comments civil and on-topic.

  • the bambo roll are really hard

they are more then a pumped murcle arm

  • lol jew jitsu

  • ninjutsu

  • Wasn't the famous movie with Gordon Liu i blieve its called Shaolin Challenges Ninja and Heros Of The East where they put Chinese and Japanese martial arts together ?

Were you the guy on the left when Obata was cutting through the bamboo ?

  • No Obata did a few movies but not him. If I remember right
