There is much debate about this issue. Ruffalo claims his well gets polluted. "Fracking" wells are drilled at depths > 5000ft(1500m). Does his well go that deep? MIT published a study indicating that the drilling is not a concern, rather concern with the proper closing of the wells BY A FEW OPERATORS. Not a mass problem as the gasbag movie gasland makes it out to be.

@ozz96 Polluted water well yeah a shallow well drilled for water by a bad driller and they hit a shallow pocket of gas that is how there are geting gas in there well. Most of this bullshit on gasland don't give anyone the facts.

@STORMLORD70 Indeed there are lots of ways for wells to become polluted. However, many studies have shown that a lot of these contaminated waters wells near fracking sites were contaminated by the methane that originated from the deep shale. They were able to track the methane using using isotopic chemical analysis.

@ozz969 You're also right that the drilling goes too deep to directly affect water wells. However, groundwater is frequently polluted by the disposal of used fracking chemicals.

You people really need to get a clue...fracking wells has been going on in this country for over 10 years already. Only now people want to blame their poor water supply on a gas company that will make them rich over night from royalties. Also please explain to me how fracking is getting into water supplys when they are drilling 7,000ft deep, and most water wells are 300ft, and the top 300ft the companies cement the well so not even the surrounding water can infiltrate the well.

@drbdiesel Cement CAN and does break. And these royalties that'll make these people "rich" aren't as large as you think. Think of it like being paid less than a teacher's salary; otherwise they'd up and move to somewhere with clean water. Unfortunately, most of these people are very poor, so leasing their land seems like a great idea... they don't know about the fresh water they'll have to bring in, the increase in doctors fees, etc.

That's all the space I got, but in short... Fracking bad.

Take this little tidbit, everytime it rains, more polluted runoff from 1/4mi of interstate highway is generated(from roads stained with oil, gas, and diesel fuels) than what 90% of oil field accidents cause. Now think of the hundreds of thousands of miles or road system is in america. Hear anyone bitching about that??? No, because everyone depends on a vehicle to get to work, and its far to inconvenient to bitch about something like that.

@drbdiesel I also live in PA and know full well how bad we already are. Add in natural gas drilling and then we screw ourselves even more.

Simply put, it's too much of a risk. If one thing goes wrong -just one- and anyone within a five mile radius is gonna feel that effect; whether it be pollution in the air, the water or the occasional explosion.

And while our water ain't the cleanest in the world I can still drink from the tap and not worry about dying in the next two weeks.

My respects to Mr. Ruffalo and his fellow activists. They're not complaining about an unacceptable situation, they're doing something about it.

We need more of this level of commitment on other issues as well; that's the only way this country will save itself.

It's sad that the only way people can get seen through the big budgets of industry is to hold candle lit vigils that inherently make them look like "new age hippies." I used to get the same treatment at work. Me "your harming your family" Them "I'm ignorant and thats the safer way to be out of fear of my own stupidity, your a hippie. Take that." However there is becoming transparency with the internet really getting used for something good.
