At least these guys were not worried that the system is going to freeze during the presentation. These were all rock solid machine. Today, I am getting pissed off so many times when my Windex laptop is stuck doing some things that I don't want it to do. I hate Microsoft
You can tell Bryan and Jim were feeling intimidated during their portion of the show. The hosts had their eyebrows raised the entire time, obviously not as impressed by the ST after seeing the Amiga.
@ClassicVideoGamerMag maybe they were more impressed the st was running very similar demo's at half the price.
really on paper the 1000 is superiour, but in reality being so expensive and really needing an expensive memory upgrade (atari realised even gem nesisitiated 512kb)
the amiga was very unstable (without upgrading, no overflow protection in os)
thats why it didnt sell anywhere near as well, until cmb amiga rectified its problems and came back with the legendary 500
lol, anyone who says the ST was a better machine than the Amiga is talking (i'm sorry) SHITE... oo oooo, the old 'it's got a MIDI port' argument ;) it still sounded like a Spectrum, checkout Turrican 2 or SOTB compared to the Miggy...
Yes but people tend to buy and use the one they prefer, and that fits their needs and budget. Both the ST and Amiga were fine micro computers in their era, and both satisfied the needs and desires of many users.
@cant1rac If it was best why are the graphical and audio capabilities worse, and why did all the early adopters have to buy new double sided drives and cut holes in the case, and why couldn't you upgrade the ram without ripping the whole machine to bits? Where was the expansion bus? Where was the CLI? Where was the multitasking? Why did half of them have fucked DMA chips? Why did 640x400 need a second monitor when the amiga did 640x512 on anything?
@doritostheking really stf range was inferiour (but it was built down to a price to give atari an early lead), the ste, mega st's and falcon are all comparable with the capablities of anything else on the market.
apples, acorn archamidies and amigas.
amiga user need to really realise their machine wasnt the best and the st wasnt the best.
each had plus and misus points.
for me personnaly the ste was the best comprimise of + and - points.
for some one else it may be a mac or an acorn or an amiga
seam to remember the st photo editor was called photochrome and ran on anything speced at ste or above obviously a memory upgrade was ideal, obviously it used scaned images and the editor was francly prehistoric compared with anything today. just incase anyone was intrested.
until the 1200 came out the amiga was a glorified games machine, and thats who bought it gamers, but gaming on the st wasn't that far behind it.
with the 1200 amigas had the first machine that could compete and maybe even beat the new atari falcons
i cant say which was actually better as i haven't used either.
but going on what ive heard the 1200 amiga may just get the nod, as it was better supported because atari was making the mistake of pulling the line to support the jaguar consule.
@cant1rac And I'm loving how the "glorified games machine" was the only one with a real OS and expansion bus. Even the TT so called "workstation" only had one slot and that came out 5 years later.
@doritostheking most amiga user ive ever meet used it for games or creating crap rave/electronic tunes.
but the amiga was just as capsble a machine for serious use, NEITHER is better than the other.
other than games i find PERSONALLY find the st a better design every thing in the one unit, psu, modulator, cubase + midi ports etc.
the st does have expansion ports and buses (amigas are better) and gem (comparable with the mac os at the same time) is a real os, the amiga os was better from 92 os2
@cant1rac Bitch please. It's ST vs A1000, STF vs A500, TT vs A3000, Falcon vs A1200. Interestingly the only time atari's hardware beat the amiga was with the falcon, and that's when you say the amiga won. Clueless.
And you brought up the fucking midi ports to defend the terrible onboard soundchip. Yeah let me buy a £5000 synth for my £400 computer just to play monkey island. Not. Some might still be using the ST as a midi controller it's rare, modern ones beat it so hard its funny.
@doritostheking yes the a1000 was a better specified machine but it was sold to the proffesional market where the st was sold at consumer level. yes the falcon is better again its was aimed at the proffesional market where as the 1200 was a consumer level product.
but the mega st range, ste amiga 500 500+ and 600 all offer comparable capablities, the reason why games are better on the amiga is because amiga offered the higher specced graphic and sound chip on there first consumer level machine.
@doritostheking amiga first comsumer level machine was in 87 were ataris was from the outset in 85, this gave atari a 2 year lead in the games market and sold very well were the original amiga sold very porly in comparision. atari had domminated the market earlier but would pay the price for the ommission it made to get there when the amiga 500 came out.
£5000 FOR A SYNTH, i dont know where you get that from, you van attach any midi device to an st at any price range.
@doritostheking really i have and am not saying the amiga is inferiour to the st, if you like making the kind of rave/electronic tunes that i hate then the amigas your man if you want it more for a gaming machine fine its the better option.
but for music production recording photography desktop publishing and the odd game i personally fine the st the better solution,
@cant1rac Jesus christ, will you ever fucking shut up?? Is that how you win arguments, you keep talking until the opponent gets lost? Every time I type up a reply I look in my inbox and it's full of more shit!
and i had no doubt the st was the better machine (until the amiga 1200 came out)
beign an amiga owner, i found the claims off the amiga zelot ludicrious
my 500+ had the most heath robbinson video by pass through cables at the back had no pre loaded work bench, audio working on the st was far better hence why it ended up in many studios, and desktop publishing and the first real system i could do photography on. renders amiga graphical superiority claims ridiculous.
Ill bet both companies Commodore and Atari would have stipulated some no no questions. There trying to sell on the positives not the negatives and as the St was'nt multitasking, that was a dont ask question.

@ClassicVideoGamerMag amiga 1000 is a more viable a machine than the original st is now.
most have had additional ram fitted & the os updated, getting rid off its original problems.
the cost is nowhere near the barrier it once was.
a fantastic versitile format, capable of running pc software with the sidecar, quality graphics & sound.
hard too find anything from the 80's that come's close to it.
want 1 sitting beside my 500+ and STE.
but both systems have their advantages

YOU sent me a post! making claims!
i always reply fully and back up what i say, the most i posted was 4 to fully answer YOUR post to ME.

before any one flame wars my comments.
i regard the ste which i still own the best 16 bit computer of its generation (80's).
the a-500 + i have one of the worst. (big heath robinson by pass audio and video box cables hanging off its back)
but the amiga 1200 the best of its generation (90's).
which is best ?
depends on which model in which decade, atari was the best until the amiga 1200 came out thats my opinion.
and i like to get my hands on a nice amiga1200 and see what it can do

Because it was fucking pants.
doritostheking 7 months ago
@doritostheking why if the audio is worse does every from fat boy slim to jean micheal jarre still use them.
i can still record cd quality audio for my band using one Cubase and the built in midi in and out.
i dont know anyone that cut holes in there st's or had to buy new drives.,
there are expansions buses on the side of my ste, its a small task to open up the case and upgrade the ram,
stop comparing the cheaper worst stf to the later amiga 500+ and 600 and 1200. try comparing like with like

@doritostheking and monkey island theres very little difference with monkey island on any system on any version.
ive had the st version for my ste i have it for my amiga 500+ and have it for my pc.
still cant get over the £5000 for a synth claim absolute rubbish. some synths do go up to that price range but you dont need anything like that.
most recording studios used mega st's whren they were current, because they were the best designed computer for that purpose

there is no such thing as the best machine.

its the best machine for your needs.
you replyed to my post.
all ive did is reply with facts to back up my post.

@doritostheking really every time an amiga user mentions graphics and audio, they mention a game.
the early lead with the inferiour stf range, being atari's biggest seller.
ment that all games had to be able to be played on the spesification of the st (85) and stfm (86).
few games, less than 3% is for the min spec is of the ste (89) and mega st (86).
hence why almost universally amiga games (87 amiga 500 first sucessful consumer model) have better graphic, scrolling and superiour audio in game.
