I read a story on Andrea Yates and I do have to say, that woman was profoundly mentally ill and should never have had children. I have also heard that when they started medicating her she was out of her mind because she was then "with it" enough to know what she had done (murder her children). I always felt for Andrea (after reading that book) because she wasn't just some cold hearted monster, even if her actions were despicable.
I have a background in Psychology, and I can tell you that most of the supposed "maternal" disorders are fluff, with the exception of postpartum depression. Looks like, our laws are more commited to protecting the perpetrator than to protect the child. This I am talking from personal experience. I know a child being physically and sexually abused and the law is not helping - they want to see blood and probably death to actually start working on it. My heart bleeds for the child! The best way to understand something is to push it to its limits. Those who have never had a nervous or stress related breakdown will never understand the minds of those who have. The best we can do is help our neighbours and friends so that it don't get to that point. To lose your mind is to lose youself. These mothers were either great parents pushed to their limit... or bad parents with bad parenting skills, mental problems, or bad anger management. It is us who failed to help them.
It is our responsibility to help each other and to let each other know there are organizations, agencys, and government programs designed to help people with the stresses of being a parent. And don't be lazy.. help your neighbour shovel their driveway. Help a neighbour bring their groceries to their doorstep. Get to know your neighbours and help as a community. Be that trusting shoulder they may need to lean on when they feel there is no help for them. Give them options so it dont get to this.

@abbing123 Because they may not want to deal with the critisizm from the people in their life mabe? Mabe they're just stressed from kids screaming and with nobody to help them they just snap. You ever impulse buy something you didn't need? Like that but on a much larger scale. They impulsively decide they can't deal with the stress... and in that moment, they are not themsleves. As a full time employee and full time student.. I had a break down once. I fell into a fit of laughter. unexplainable.

Her husband was told how fragile she was and he specifically said "no more children"........She is paying now and her husband is remarried. I think he is more responsible for what happened than she was. Why should he get off when he was completely aware of the consequences of her having more and more children. It was his opinion I suppose that he did not care what the doctor had to say. He is guilty.

The saddest thing, is that with our legal system, they get less time than someone dealing drugs. What is wrong with our system, when taking a human life is worth less time than drug trafficing etc... The point of stopping the drug dealing is because it is killing people, HELLO WAKE UP!!!!!! We the people need to stand up and make a difference in our laws!
