the masterpiece of fusion blues... Mitch was genius on this performance, without him no way... try to imagine another drummer from that period on this...
@mihaipopovicimusic And thats the truth, my friend. I love mitch and he was the first who mixed rock and jazz. When i start playing with Jimi he was 18 !
I was there that night. I have the ticket stub right over there stuck to the portrait that I did of Jimi. Nobody, but nobody like him before or since.
I agree totally that Jimi played from his soul, and didn't think about what note goes where. In fact, I still get into arguments with people who weren't even alive when Jimi changed the sound of Rock and Blues for good. In my opinion, there is music which is "BH or AH." Before hendrix and after Hendrix. Michael Schenker was totally into Hendrix and lived with that idiot Monika, who worried more about "Cleaning up the room," than getting Jimi the proper help. 5 hours wasted; Damn Shame !
TO; theone2055. I have the SAME Rubber Dubber LP! Mine had TWO of the SAME record, both of mine are Side ONE, backed with Side FOUR. RUBBER DUBBER was LA FORUM 4/25/1970. Does ANYONE have the other TWO of the same ones, both with sides 2 and 3 ? If so, let me know,, biged6f9@yahoo.com because i would LOVE to SWAP out, have this LP Set COMPLETE,, and SO WOULD YOU! Thanks!
The L.A Forum is a great place to see a show maybe one of the best in the world, wish I could have seen Hendrix,I did see my first concert there in 82 AC/DC the building is haunted by legends.
@straight2helll Very true. I went to see the Moody Blues there back in the eighties, and some guy named Stevie Ray Vaughn was also on the show. Amazing. The place was really hummin' that night. My ears got indented.
jimi idolized many african american blues guitar players. he learned from listening to old records of them. so he new about the blues, even traditional blues. but he took the trad. blues and merged it with psychadelic blues/funk and took his experiences with hallucinagenics to create a melange unlike anybody could ever do. even 40 years after his death nobody has done what he has...
Wow....I was there and this is the first time I've heard anything from the concert. Brings back such incredible memories. Also, would like to ask ANYONE who was there about a thing he did when security tried to take over and he said, with his guitar, SOMETHING to them???
my fave live version of this great song, normally in every live version of every song with fast distortion there is some bit, even if it's little, that sounds oput pf place, but on this one here jimi really has the perfect control over the distortion, no unwanted distortion troughout the whole solo, which is probably my favorite solo by him.
Ian Anderson always complained(when doesn't he?) that Thick as a Brick couldn't be played live correctly because no one was quiet and appreciated it...it was acoustic and not loud enough over the audience.
I have to agree. Jimi is NOT, and often doesn't, play so fricken loud like they do today...probably to play over the sound of the audience screaming and yelling.
@edmonddantes64 I've heard he got pretty loud though to play his more distorted songs though. It is nice to hear mellow, quieter songs like this as well though. You can't go to eleven all the time. Some times you gotta take it down a notch.
I have heard people on here say Jimi was a sloppy guitar player, now I have just sit here and listened to this solo and, well you have heard it too so you tell me.... Ha Ha, Jimi was a down right Cold Blooded git player. And Jimi was just fuckin around, he could play this shit in his sleep. SRV, Clapton, and the names go on and on, none of them touch Jimi and those players are fuckin awesome but Jimi takes the cake and anything else there is.....RIP Jimi.....
What still separates Hendrix l from most guys today, is what I call his variety of playing notes. never quite the standard lick you think you should hear. that's the only way I can describe it. Even the imitators like SRV,who was great, can fall into the trap of playin the same notes again and again.
Remember, Jimi was this good because he didn't attach notes to his music, he heard the sounds in his head, and reproduced it on the guitar, he didn't sit there going "Ok I'll play this note and that note" he didn't attach limiting words and phrases to sounds. When you hear a note being played your brain thinks "Thats an A, or E." Whereas other musicians try to eliminate this, so when they hear a sound, its purely the sound, and your brain doesn't need to attach a letter to it.
this is it..... the actual perception of the "music" created the way your mind is going to hear it........ he was capable of stripping any bureauchrasy from music..... hendrix focused on the roots of music.... which is immediate spiritual interaction with the world.....
@thejakeyl88 I bet Jimi dinn give a shit what a particular note was called or named ..he liked or disliked it or should I say felt it as appropriate or not, and decided accordingly in absolute spontaneity ...a true hall mark of a great musician.
where can i find that cd, i used to have it in cassette years ago but somebody stole it from me and i been miserable since then....thanx for the gift!
@bigstU25 and can you believe the review of this show was of some unimpressive playing in the local newspaper article?
when Jimi played the blues it was like he was still trying to prove himself to the old masters who, like Howling Wolf, may have put Jimi down but they just didn't realize or didn't like how far he had transcended them. Staying true to the blues while developing a highly progressive technique and musical scheme is no easy feat but Jimi was able to do it w/ relative ease.
@g0ldbuG yeah i have the concert on CD and in the cover shows the news artical. Im like those reporters are either haters or musically retarded. But im a BIG Hendrix fan. I have a ton of his concerts on DVD or CD. But i didnt know Howling Wolf didnt like Jimi's playin. Where did you get that info from?
@tbone2055 Actually, the double album by Rubber Dubber was the 4-25-1970 LA Forum concert. It is a real shame that a good, off the mixing board recorded version of the 1970 concert doesn't exist to my knowledge. There are two different recordings of the 1970 LA Forum show, one is VERY guitar heavy, (Fine with me) and the other is more vocal oriented. Unfortunately, either one is poorly recorded, which is a real shame, because if you listen with your mind you realize how GREAT the 1970 show is.
@jmsbk12345 for some reason tho i really doubt jimi was the one that said shhh, prolly noel redding or mitch mithell, just his whole vibe and temperament, doesnt seem like him
@bimwopbarn Believe me, it is Jimi that says: 'ssh!' He was annoyed that the people in the crowd were making a noise when he was trying to tell them a story with his guitar.
@jmsbk12345 that's the tightrope jimi had to walk unfortunately. the one between serious musician and gimmicky performer on stage. you can hear it at times during performance in the comments he makes and in interviews too. the gimmicks got him noticed but it was his music that made him who he was and gave him the career and the staying power of his legacy. image is very much a central part of the rock genre and so jimi must've known what he was getting in too once he signed on.
@jmsbk12345 dude why didn't anyone follow on this crescendo building solo style Jimi pioneered? is it because they tried and they just can't do it with the same attack and intensity as the Master? Jimi used the guitar to its full potential..especially in songs like red house and machine gun. quiet, loud, sustained notes, quickly strummed notes and everything in between for the full dynamic listening experience.
4/26/69: The Forum, Los Angeles, California. SET LIST: Tax Free, Foxy Lady, Red House, Spanish Castle Magic, Star Spangled Banner, Purple Haze, I Don't Live Today, Voodoo Chile, Sunshine of Your Love.
Later Jimi goes to the Whiskey A Go Go with Mama Cass Elliot and Billy Eckstine.
I like how he shuts up the crowd at the start!
