野茂がすべてを切り開いた。野球での成績はもとより、日本人がメジャーで活躍できる事を証明して見せた事が何よりも偉大。物凄い強い意志を持っているのに、じれったくなるくらい朴訥なところが魅力的。つらくても男は黙ってやり遂げるって感じがすばらしい。

会見では円満を装っていますが、
近鉄との契約で揉めたすえ、任意引退選手扱い（他球団に移籍できない）にされそうだったため、実際に任意引退後、規定適用外だったメジャーへ行くことになった。
プロ入団初年度から4年連続最多勝＋4年連続最多奪三振。
近年並ぶものが居ない大投手に近鉄はどんな扱いをしていたのか気になる。
