  • It's a lovely looking ship but it doesn't look like a warship more like a cruise liner , I could only see the one gun at the front .

  • @Albert18264 it only has one gun. It has 2 phalanx systems, 1 either side, which shoot down incoming missiles, but its arsenal it surface to air missiles, and you cant see them

  • is it the celtic dragon on the hull of the ship

  • so sleek & beautiful, I love the name & the dragon at the front, every angle is beautiful.

  • just read that this single boat could destroy Argentina's entire airforce by itself if that airforce threatened the Falklands. Is that possible?

  • @baconsplace It's designed to be able to track multiple targets at once and can launch and control multiple missiles at the same time. The radar, said to be more advanced than the Heathrow control tower, can apparently track an item as small as a cricket ball travelling 2 or 3 times the speed of sound. Oh and we have 6 of them, both in launch and in trial.....and it can also reduce it's size on an enemy radar appearing to be nothing more than a fishing boat. Pretty damn impressive!

  • @scottyc1983 thanks , that's impressive. Take a look, if you don't know the story, at British naval power of yesteryear and the ill fated HMS VIctoria 1893 We have come a long way in armed boat technology since then

  • @scottyc1983 dont forget, the MoD has 6 on hold waiting for more prosporous times so we actually have the money to get them....

  • @titytit I didn't know that. I was under the impression we were getting 6 only.

  • @kintore2003 they cut it from 12 to 6, but they said that we will get another 6 in the future when we have the money.

  • @titytit

    Thanks for the reply.

  • @baconsplace Yes

  • Very expensive platform for a 4.5inch gun, that's all the Navy can afford to put on it. The MOD sure know how to waste money. One South American Navy will have a bargain very soon when we can't afford the fuel !

  • @adelaide102 To be fair the gun is just a doctrine thing. It's like a bayonet.

  • @CmdrTobs It is very useful though for hitting land targets and pirate boats, I don't know why they don't carry larger guns.£1 billion of ship chasing a Somali wooden boat, is that the best use of resources ? The MOD will not make or buy cheaper vessels for different tasks, so we have a smaller and smaller navy with more expensive ships, that unless we declare war on Russia, The USA or China, are more than we need for most tasks.

  • @adelaide102 Is that enough for you? or u want more infomation. Lets not forget the 2 Helicopters it can carry either 1 or 2 Lynx Class or 1 Merlin and the fact that it can track 1000 targets at the same time the size of a cricket ball moving 3 times speed of sound. does that please u?

  • @PyrrusOfEpirusTW correction: it can track 300 targets, and shoot down something the size of a tennis ball

  • @bannon1000 Yes , and it's interesting that Missouri's steel was penetrated by a Phalnx round, yet observers will insist that a modern AS missile will do no damage to a ship like an IOWA.

  • Just a small point of naval correctness. The modern definition of capital ship is defined as the leading vessel in a fleet or major unit.( Not by size) By applying that definition and the fact that USN and RN class "boomers" as capital vessels, I think the statement the the RN doesn't have any, might need rephrasing.

  • Comment removed

  • So, want have you proven with your comments, ooohh, i see, the RN doesn't have any capital ships, so you, must behave like an " mad-hatter " !!! All of the comments, don't change the facts, the USN is more powerful than the next 13 - 17, navies of the world, ( combined ) as you read, this comment. If you like, or wish too, blame someone for the state of the RN's current battle order, look to your MP's @ Whitehall, and such, and not the American Navy.

  • @MrJeffreydunson No in the real world your navy is huge yes. What good did it do in Vietnam? NONE. Your navy is large but laughable. Lets repeat a Chinese submarine surfaced in the centre of a battle group and not the carrier, its air craft or its DOZEN escorts had a clue it was there. As you slash over $ 500 billion from your defence budget, China announces its 10th double digit increase, as your the MOST in debt nation on the planet $500 billion is just the start of your cuts

  • @MrJeffreydunson The USN ( & the US forces in general) have a big mark against them in that they all make a big, fundamental mistake. They always under estimate the opposition and over estimate their capabilities, in both human terms and technology.

e.g The much vaunted CIWS of Missouri, could not cope with 2 silkworms..Take lessons from Bannons point about the chinese sub and the Kitty Hawk

When it come to modern fighting, and the weapons involved, size will mean nothing.

  • @bannon1000 The US military plans goals, and sea-control (navy) decades ahead of the other navies of the world, that is the reason, why, we can reduce our budget to the tune of billions of dollars and still remain, the most prowerful might on the plant, in the histroy of the mankind. Really, dude ?! a silk worm missile VS. a Battleship's Armor hull ?!! fail twit !!!!

  • sorry thats an american influenced ship. wheres the lessons of 82 in that design. looks pretty yes... practical? lets hope we never need to find out!!

  • @lofty318 How is it American influenced?

  • @MrBertramPantyshield Look at the new types of gear, coming into service across the US inventory. The DDG-1000, UVA's, LCS-1& 2, MV-22,the Virginia class subs,F-35C, and the work on the " Rail Gun " All of these new & current inventory toys, shall shape the out-come of today's and future " Victory at Sea " plus together with the RN's new Carrier and the T45, Global hawk, the new AIM-120 X missiles.Let's not forget the cyber-networks behind all of this global war-fighting ( costly ), chess game.

  • Love the dragons on the sides!

  • I worked on this ship and would not like to be on the receiving end of its fire power, so i guess some of you out there dont know anything of this ship i suggest you close your big mouths, we have 6 of them now thank goodness, no thanks to our Tory government

  • @robinpollock Yes, no thanks at all, it was the previous government which oversaw the fall in Type 45 numbers from 12 to 6. Nothing to do with the Coalition. Labour decided they wanted the euro-project which spawned the Franco-Italian Horizon class.

On firepower: A-50 Sylver launchers were bought; which can't fire either TLAMs or SCALP-N. It's missing 16 VLS cells up front, Harpoons, Stingray torpedoes, and four of them don't have CIWS. Thank goodness for that, eh? Only £6.6 billion? Bargain.

  • @MrBertramPantyshield I hear plans for fitting them with Harpoons were in the pipeline (likely scavanged from decomissioned ships like the Phalanx), but any word on the Stingray situation? I know that the RN generally relies on the frigates for sub-surface deterrent and its own boomers for the anti-surface stuff.

  • @Melanth89 I would imagine if Harpoon is cannibalised from the Type 22s then Stingray will possibly migrate at the same time. Costs can't be huge, particularly if they're just added at first refit. I've no idea on time. Daring sprouted a set of CIWS last year and a picture of another Type 45, Diamond I think, being fitted appeared as well. Your guess is as good as mine really.

  • @MrBertramPantyshield Wait a minute, you mean to say, that theses warships aren't to have torpedoes on board ?!!! MoD has spend over 6.6 billion ? Look at it this way for $ 4.5 billion we can sell you an Nimitz Class Aircraft Carrier !!! If i were British, i be very very PISS - OFF at BAE !!! ( i know that the scale for the pound, and the dollar is at different ratios ).

  • @MrJeffreydunson the fact is , aircraft carriers are great capitol ships, but they are now a bit dated and far over priced, a nuclear sub could easily sink a carrier, much more developments are underway to create multipurpose ships which can carry planes, troops, helicopters etc, 6.6 billion we get 6 ships not one and dont have to fill it with planes, take a look at your zumawalt class.

  • @MrJeffreydunson Cost over-runs were largely as a result of political incompetence. £6 billion was never going to build 12 high-end DDGs. We could have created yet another Aegis destroyer, but Sea Viper (at least on paper) is the far superior system.

The ship does carry torpedoes, they are launched by the Merlin or Lynx/Wildcat helicopters. However, no ship launched system is currently fitted.

A nimitz takes 5,000 sailors to operate, these six ships take 1140. That's the true cost.

  • @MrBertramPantyshield Yes, you just maybe right, just design & build, a large type Aegis Destroyer, ( the largest in Europe, of course ) to RN & Lloyd's specs. Just two of this would do the trick as a anti-defence plateform for the RN Carrier TF ?! 6.6 billion-dollar, should do the job nicely. The Merlins, can be just as easily shot down, before/during the launch phase.

  • @MrJeffreydunson The Merlins are ASW helicopters. Stringray torpedoes are to be used against submerged submarines, not against surface ships.

I don't think the RN should have gone Aegis, just because everyone who is reliant on the US for technology has bought one is no justification. Sea Viper can fire and track four times as many missiles as Aegis; SAMPSON and S1850M are far better than current USN radars. Aegis probably would have mean SM-2 rather than Aster, again an inferior alternative.

  • @MrBertramPantyshield Now the problem here, or in the future, when the Zulwalts ( 'star wars' looking destroyers, ) enter service it shall be the most advanced thing on / in the sea ( the thing will be deadly from the pier-side). Only about three( 3 ) units will be produced ( way too costly !!! ). This new warship, shall not have a equal, for some years to come. My point is this, BAE has made claims that the Type 45's the most advanced in the world !!! until the Zumwalts ?!

  • @MrJeffreydunson BAE claims that the Type 45 is the most advanced air defence ships in the world, in which case I'll tentatively say that they're correct and will remain so even after the Zumwalts land (Zumwalts are a multi-mission ship, not dedicated AD). Additionally, they lack mast mounted radar arrays; the higher the radar is mounted the better the clarity vs clutter, effectiveness against sea-skimming craft/missiles and look-over-horizon capability.

  • @Melanth89 It's known that all USN ships are multi-mission tasked, from FFG's to the CG's !!! We invented the concept in the first place. that's why our CVN's are such winners, and no one with 5 brain cells, wishes too attack a American naval force. (except for those " crazy-ass " Iranians ).

  • @MrJeffreydunson I was under the impression that Zumwalts are going to be used primarily in land attack roles, with Arleigh Burkes being a CBG's main anti-air platform. In any case a 14,500 ton cruiser designed a decade later, and costing half as much as the entire Type 45 programme, will likely be better. One would really hope so.

  • @MrBertramPantyshield You have made some good points, and keen observations ( most of the viewers, don't get the concept of " Naval Doctrine " ) In the next couple of decades, the USN shall change / transform surface warfare = conducted & won. The paramount concern is the use of the new mult -mission vessels, and data links, along with working with our allies / partners in NATO. recreating the fast moving & all sensors, Carrier Strike Group, tailored for the 21st century.

  • @MrJeffreydunson Are you serious? Remember over the next 10 years OVER $500 BILLION is to be cut from US defence spending & more likely to follow. Your Nimitz class carrier & its 12 destroyer escorts HAD NO IDEA a Chinese SONG class sub was amongst them until it surfaced in the middle of the battle group just as your most advanced stealth drone was shot down a few months ago and is being taken apart by Iran...and its was OUR navy that saved USS MISSOURI from a silk worm missile

  • @bannon1000 the stealth drone was a BAE Systems Tiranis....British...soooo yea......lets not brag about that mate.....just kick it under the sofa.....

  • @titytit The stealth drone that was shot down wasn't a British Taranis. It was a US drone, the Taranis hasn't yet started it's test flights, let alone come in to service. Also the Taranis is Black, the one Iran shot down was white, like the other US drones.

  • @TheLahness drones can be painted different colours. Didnt know that baout the Taranis....it looked a lot like one though....

  • @titytit I know lol, but it has been confirmed as a USA drone, by the USA, it's a weird name like B-30913 or something. Random numbers in it lol.

  • It's interesting how country's can create weapons of every sort, to kill others, but find it so hard to create jobs to support their citizens. Humans has evolved into nothing more that "Death" we kill for the pleasure of it.

  • @MrPm631370 We can create jobs quite easily. The thing is £££ what is stopping certain individuals.

  • @MrPm631370 How many jobs do ya think were created in the design and manufacture of this ship dummy ?

  • @MrBarrsy68 It's "smart" of you to reply to an old post, written by someone whom you consider to be.... a... "dummy" enjoy your short life!!

  • looks like Japanese Battleships and cruisers of WW 2 with the towers

  • It would be really cool if they did keep the dragons on the bow!!!

  • Looks like Seawraith ....when will we get to see Seawraith on the water?

  • This ship looks awesome from every angle !!

  • Will the dragon emblems at the bow remain there throughout her commissioned life, or is that just until her next paint job?

  • @Planetar17, I think once she is fully commissioned into operational service it will probably be removed but ultimately its upto the First Sea Lord, it would be nice to see it stay though.

  • @Planetar17

I doubt it, the grey profile of the ship is designed to be tough to spot by eye on the sea. A flaming red dragon would stick out like a sore thumb :p

  • it still has that.. new boat smell :P

  • That is one beautiful boat!

  • @deyvi69 ship , only subs are called boats .

  • @bigrider2806 It all depends on weight wether they are called a ship or a boat. Rowing boat or warship as an example.

  • @britgary Not in the Navy, they are all ships, the only boats are submarines
