Primates came first. they then split into Strepsirrhini & Haplorrhini. Haplorrhini then spilt into Platyrrhini & Catarrhini. Catarrhini then split into old world monkeys and apes. Hominidae aka great apes then speciated from gibbons aka lesser apes.

So apes didn't come from monkeys but came from the same ancestors that monkeys did. So we aren't monkeys but apes. we came from apes and are still apes.

amazing how quickly the gibbon can move bipedally!! very out of proportion with those long arms yet incredibly quick on the ground...as far as it not knowing its own strength, that description is GENERALLY reserved for the great apes, but i suppose it has some relevance with the lesser, though i'm not sure how much...non-human primates looove to tease so i wouldn't be too worried about the dog...be more worried about the gibbon when the dog finally gets fed up LOL

The best way to look at it is apes are no longer monkeys. Dinosaurs have many similarities to birds and birds clearly descended from dinosaurs. both dinos and mammals descended from reptiles but we don't go calling birds and mammals, reptiles, right?

If it changes enough then you can consider it a different type of animal even if the common ancestor has modern descendents that have changed little. I understand the conflict between language and taxonomy. But if we are to call apes and humans, monkeys, then we should call all birds and mammals, reptiles, and all tetra-pods, vertebrates. Should we not dwell on there currrent forms?

@Lesouder5555Nature we "SHOULD", and we can. but those names are there to differentiate between different species. but I think Apes should be a group WITHIN the monkeys, not a separate lineage from them, since we are descended from them. And humans should be WITHIN apes, not a separate lineage from apes. Monkeys, Rodents, Crocodilians, Birds, Horses, Elephants, etc are all different groups WITHIN the vertabrates. So we all really are vertabrates. See where I'm getting at? :-)

@Vailwolf thats true some monkeys dont have tails, there is even a monkey called a "barbary ape" that has no tail so i can see how it can confuse people, the easiest way to tell the difference between a monkey and a an ape is the length of the arms compared to the legs, monkeys front and back legs are pretty much the same length cos theyre more quadrapedal but apes have very long arms and short legs (except humans which is the other way round)
