Also, I started following Roth when I was 11 or 12.....As I recall, Mark Roth was the very first 'cranker' - then came Marshall Hollman a few years later, and all the kids (boys) in junior leagues (1970s time frame) tried to copy Roth
@steelersfanhawaii there were no such things as 'crankers' then, they were ALL 'strokers'.. Now wehave tons of 'no-thumbers' and - thanks to that Aussie bowler - 'two-handers'. Wonder what the likes of Dick Weber, Earl Anthony, Don Carter, Bob Strampe, Gus Lampo, Billy Hardwick, and all those classic 'old-schoolers' think about the way we throw the ball now?
The Sidewinder was the best one. You all don't realize how tough that is. They cheated on the double flying eagle. Their balls each took out both of their pins, when the flying pins are really supposed to. Petraglia's (the right) pin would have missed the one on Roth's (the left) lane.
I love the style bowling alley that's in this video... Crown pins, plastic overbars with the 2 orange dots displaying your 1st and 2nd throws, and the 80's style automatic pinsetter covers.
andy varipappa was throwing the "flying eagle" back in the 40's and 50's. Not only was he maybe the best ambassador for the game at that time, he could be the best bowler period. He won the All-Star several times. WAY UNDER-RATED.
great!!!!

WOW BRAVO!!!!!! I wonder how well Roth and Petraglia are at pool/billiards? Probably not a good idea to get in a bet on 9-ball with them...lol

this is when real men were bowlers. Men who bowled to get away from there crummy wives and crappy jobs.
