I want one of these so bad. I'm eyeing one for 32K...I can afford it, but I just don't know...I've never owned a plane before. How much does maintenance run each month usually?
We went flying in my Mooney 201 today and going flying in my friend Rich's Super Viking tonight. We won't be doing any of those kinds of maneuvers though! Excellent video!
Can anyone tell me about the effects of AD-2009-16-03? It's the AD concerning the SAP cylinders failure. I'm thinking of buying a Bellanca that has the IO-520-K engine and I would like to know about any feelings or experiences anyone has with the problem mentioned in the AD. Seems to me that compliance would be costly and the frequency of compliance suggests that failure of those cylinders could be rapid and still possible even with compliance. Your thoughts would be welcome. Thank you.
Nice video! It appears to snap roll quicker than expected. I own the '79 7ECA. I was told that it was one of Bellanca's demo planes' at Oshkosh. Thanks for the video!
My father had the Bellanca 260 Viking when I was growing up. It made him ill to have to sell it. That plane was a work of art, and a match in every regard for any plane in its class. It was fast, stable, dependable, and forgiving. N8507R
I enjoyed the video very much. Thanks for posting!
PS ... I know the 260 was kind of in between the Cruisemaster and the Viking. But, it more resembled the Viking. So, I've always referred to it as such...
@BBFjetboat Agree...Can't beat the value either. I see these for 30K used, Mooney M-20Cs for even less! Probably my favorite twin is the DHC Caribou. Check it out, it is one sweet airplane!
Yes, a few of the old classics were resurrected in the wake of the 1996 Ed Stimpson ruling that overturned the disastrous 'product liability' laws. It made sense to restart production of established, proven designs, but only a handful (if any) of Luscombe Sedans, LanShe-modded Meyers 145's, New Taylorcrafts and the like got built. I found the South African idea to produce a Comanche C redesigned in composites and with state-of-the-art avionics interesting though.......

@Rikki0 I only know of one BSV affected by that AD. His cylinders were replaced for free.

I'm on my second Viking and no, I don't think one would want to roll into a split-S in a Cirrus.

Great find on the video. So do any of that type of flying(towards the end of the video) in your machine?
wbogaardt 3 years ago
Never, that would be illegal!
I did do a demo ride in 1977 with a guy who owned a large part of Bellanca. We didn't do a Hammer Head but did everything else. Holy crap!!!

i didn't know the bellanca has a wood wing. smart.
b101aa2 3 years ago
Yes, it reduces turbulence.
drummerdude6485 3 years ago
and a lot stronger then standard aluminum wings. have built 3 kit builts. all wood wings. prefer it, unless composites are used too.

That is true, too!

Is this plane faster than a Cessna 182?
CitiPilot 3 years ago
They are pretty much the same speed on the taxiway. When they get into the air the Bellanca is a little faster. See my web site 160knots~com.

Isn't a Viking a 4 place airplane? It might be fun to loop and roll with the wife and kids.

I flew one of these several times a few years ago. You don't ask the plane for a roll, it asks you. A very unique airplane and a real joy to fly.

Rod Simpsons "Airlife's General Aviation" says they built 1377 Vikings, most prior to their 1980 bankruptcy.

I think bellanca and mooney are probaly two of the best airplanes made.

Would be horrendously expensive and uneconomic today of course, but it's got infinately more charisma than a DA-40 for example.
Andypilot333 3 years ago
I don't know. The last one they built was 2005.
