Flimsy interiors . reliability issues ........you could take any ST/VTS/Type R and my money is that long term the french car will prove to cost the most in maintenance and be the most unreliable....
@youlooklikeawasteman Peugeot 206 Quiksilver 1.6 = 7yrs old, only issues were deformed locking wheel nuts and corroded exhaust from the CAT back. Honda Civic Type-R = 2yrs old, complete lockout due to fault with immob, gear meshing out of sync and brakes stuck. Both cars were owned from new and both were looked after and never raced.
jap sports cars are the worst for reliability from a show room, have a think how many major recalls have their been on french cars over lets say toyota or even lets take honda that used rover engine parts

@Hunt8849 yer i have a saxo and its really cheap to run and insurance is cheap but i think the 106 is better because insurance companies class the saxo as a "rudeboy car" because you can get cheap body kits etc even though you can use the same for the 106 but that isnt in the same class i dont know why this is but i think the 106 is the cheaper option

@Birmo08030 yeah the gearbox are made like to hit 60 in 2nd gear to get a good 0-60 time. I can get about 65 out of mine in 2nd dunno how you can get 73. Have a look at my video!
@AZ274 The 0-60 tests were done differently. Peugeot's were done with a full tank and a passenger to bring insurance down to compete against the Citroen.
if anyone figures out why they turboed a 1.4 "8v" let me know? seems pretty stupid, could have just got a 1.6 16v and cammed it... around the same bhp and N/a too
The 1.4 have much better conrods original than 1.6. I have boosted a 1.4 with 2bar with complete standard internals. Ended up 262bhp at 1,35bar of boost and it runned as a daily car and worked fine with that setup.

@Tennant909 I know what you mean,but atleast theGT is stock with turbo,so anyway in this case I would want an1.4 turbo than1.6 16v without' cause you just increase little bit boost without any money effort(just MBC and new chipProgram) and have like 160+ Hp from small 1.4L and the economy stays low anyway.And you dont have to throw money to turboed a 1.6 to as fast.And if they would turboed the 1.6 16v in factory the price of the car would much higher.But you right 1.6 16v is much better engine.
@Tennant909 you can get a 1.4 engine much easier. And for the 1.4 engine there are versions with a lower CR so you could use the pistons of those to get youre CR down. For the 1.6 the only option would be to buy expensive aftermarket pistons, if there are any.
yeah but a 106 quiksilver is a nice looking car with all the right things going in the handling department. a punto is womans car (usually a fat hairdresser) and they handle nowhere near as good as a quiky ;)
@lukeere Agree but did you ever had a GTver?Its like compare a golf1,4 with golf gti .What I meant is that if you have a punto gt and its stock with turbo and140HP from1.4 .So instead puting 2-3grounds in car to rich the stock power of punto you can put the money into the punto and have really damn fucking fast car.

i know for sure a 1.6 16v with some mods wil not out perform a 1.4 turbocharged 1, the 1.6 16v will have the same hp, but it will only have a little bit of torque of a small rpm range. But the turbocharged 1.4 will have lots of torque from the moment the turbo kicks in, thats why its much fast en more fun to drive.(and i have 1 myself 2)

VTR FOR SWAP. Hey guys im looking at swapping my 2001 mk2 VTR (silver) for a 106 quicksilver. For the reason that i have just got a house and need a cheaper but still "nippy" run around :) the MOT is until August 2011 (with history mot's) and TAX until march 2011. The car is in good condition with lowered suspension to the rear with the back window pro-tinted and the rear lights smoked which i recently had done in the last month. So from the rear it does look fairly mean ;) other than that eve
was that a non turbo vts ??? no offence too the pug, very nice and pretty fast but stick a turbo saxo next too it see what happens...that be more interesting. A good turbo will always win as yours did against a non-aspirated motor but turbo on turbo thats all good :) Nice motor anyways m8
@PugMarshall2906 im well aware that 106 & saxo are the same, my point is that the drag was a turbo pug and a non turbo saxo, doesnt really prove anything unless the saxo had crazy mods which it obviously didnt. So on the pug side its not really proving anything.

Its funny cos people always say these cars are shit because theyre french or owned by the street corner guys or whatever but since I got a 106, i know why they are popular to those who have them - the handling is like a go kart but also feels safe and makes you confident. The driving position, although a little cramped around the knees is almost perfect, and they cost bugger all to run. Proud to have one now :)

I'm barely a French car 'fan', but my family has had LOTS of them, and I mean LOADS, and the only one we couldn't fix on our front drive with a none-extensive toolbox and a cup o tea was a Citroen XM. Because that car should never have come out of the factory. From my own experiences all I have to say are god things about the frogs - maybe yours aren't as good - it can depend on country too.
they're not as reliable as the VAG cars and some of their designs seem a bit "wtf why did they do that" like rear exhaust hangers on clios, most cars have a pipe of metal from the body hanging down and a rubber mount from the exhaust is placed on it where clios have this stupid block of steel and when the rubber rots you need the whole new piece of steel etc, that's what I mean by bad mechanical design. And i still stand by that statement, audi's etc are more expensive.

@gary63693 My car is a 1.1. I've driven a GTI, and didn't see any problem with grip, and it was just quick enough for my liking, but it's all about personal preference... I don't really like French cars so anyone can say what they like about them and I wouldn't give a shit... but that was my experience.
I agree with you. I only have a 1.1, but as you said they're cheap to run, and from a mechanic's point of view, easy to fix. Great for a first time driver too.
And you can sort the tail happy problems with a couple of sand bags in the boot ;D lol

there's a big dif. the 106 as you know as been tuned to handle the turbo upgrade and prob kicking out 140bhp and the saxo is prob standard at 120.
they still shoe boxes tho and french crap. even tho i have a saxo vts lol. mine aint standard, mine is pushing out about 150bhp it revs upto 8000rpm and tops out at 145mph :P

am not a chav and i have a saxo vts turbo, its has a full staight threw on it with s bend in it, the engine port and polished, long rough air intake and smooth outlet, 1.8 injectors and a 2.0litre carb on it, remapped ecu and lighten and bodykit thats pumping 250bhp out of it almost and that outrun scoobys and some skylines depending on year and bar of turbo, because its owned by a chav for a hour before they crash it so they then go crash there nan's 1.1 doesnt mean its chavvy

As a mechanic you should know that 20 valves do make a difference on a turbo car, The 1.8T has 3 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder giving a compression ratio of 9:5:1 which is good for low end torque and a perk power band between 2000 & 5000 rpm.

This is strange because I have a 'slightly' modified VTS and some of my friends have GIT's and in direct drags they are always slower.
Another strange thing is, My VTS hits 60 in 6.75's - Ive only owned it for 3 months... Hits 72/73mph in second gear!
But gota love VTS-GTI Powah!

@laikros oh youve got an escort turbo! classic fords are amazing! you got a dump valve in it? yeah my mates got a 106 rallye only a 1.3 but 100 hp as standard and without going over the top it is one of the best handleing cars ive ever been in ! and it weights nothing so gets up to top speed very quickly. no big chavvy wheels just some nice white painted steelies. yeah i bet the 1.6 has some real go thennn

i know for sure a 1.6 16v with some mods wil not out perform a 1.4 turbocharged 1, the 1.6 16v will have the same hp, but it will only have a little bit of torque of a small rpm range. But the turbocharged 1.4 will have lots of torque from the moment the turbo kicks in, thats why its much fast en more fun to drive.(and i have 1 myself 2)

VTR FOR SWAP. Hey guys im looking at swapping my 2001 mk2 VTR (silver) for a 106 quicksilver. For the reason that i have just got a house and need a cheaper but still "nippy" run around :) the MOT is until August 2011 (with history mot's) and TAX until march 2011. The car is in good condition with lowered suspension to the rear with the back window pro-tinted and the rear lights smoked which i recently had done in the last month. Its funny cos people always say these cars are shit because theyre french or owned by the street corner guys or whatever but since I got a 106, i know why they are popular to those who have them - the handling is like a go kart but also feels safe and makes you confident. The driving position, although a little cramped around the knees is almost perfect, and they cost bugger all to run. Proud to have one now :)

I'm barely a French car 'fan', but my family has had LOTS of them, and I mean LOADS, and the only one we couldn't fix on our front drive with a none-extensive toolbox and a cup o tea was a Citroen XM. Because that car should never have come out of the factory. From my own experiences all I have to say are god things about the frogs - maybe yours aren't as good - it can depend on country too.

they're not as reliable as the VAG cars and some of their designs seem a bit "wtf why did they do that" like rear exhaust hangers on clios, most cars have a pipe of metal from the body hanging down and a rubber mount from the exhaust is placed on it where clios have this stupid block of steel and when the rubber rots you need the whole new piece of steel etc, that's what I mean by bad mechanical design. And i still stand by that statement, audi's etc are more expensive.

I don't really like French cars so anyone can say what they like about them and I wouldn't give a shit... but that was my experience.

I agree with you. I only have a 1.1, but as you said they're cheap to run, and from a mechanic's point of view, easy to fix. Great for a first time driver too.

there's a big dif. the 106 as you know as been tuned to handle the turbo upgrade and prob kicking out 140bhp and the saxo is prob standard at 120.
they still shoe boxes tho and french crap. even tho i have a saxo vts lol. mine aint standard, mine is pushing out about 150bhp it revs upto 8000rpm and tops out at 145mph :P

am not a chav and i have a saxo vts turbo, its has a full staight threw on it with s bend in it, the engine port and polished, long rough air intake and smooth outlet, 1.8 injectors and a 2.0litre carb on it, remapped ecu and lighten and bodykit thats pumping 250bhp out of it almost and that outrun scoobys and some skylines depending on year and bar of turbo, because its owned by a chav for a hour before they crash it so they then go crash there nan's 1.1 doesnt mean its chavvy

@LIP15 I take it you have a Ford Fiesta (89-97) 1.6 RS Turbo, I thought mechanics where on about £25 an hour? You could do better that car stock has only 133hp.
As a mechanic you should know that 20 valves do make a difference on a turbo car, The 1.8T has 3 intake and 2 exhaust valves per cylinder giving a compression ratio of 9:5:1 which is good for low end torque and a perk power band between 2000 & 5000 rpm.
