Well, this time I am glad that I happen to own a guitar worth 20€ :DDDDD it's my acoustic one and I am getting a new one soon... I could use it to practice percussion techniques.. You have also earned my subscription, mate, so keep adding these wonderful videos.
Ah Dale! I lost and then found you again in the ocean that is Youtube! You're a genius as a musician/teacher, this is probably the best explanation of how to do exactly what I want to achieve but yet still haven't been able to.
Do you do lessons of any sort? I am in Yorkshire but would happily commute to have an a hour or so with you.

Thanks for sharing, I've been working some percussion in, but it's nice that you've got an organized way to do it. on a side note, if you move to Seattle with that accent, you will never be without female company (smile)
i rather not beat the shit in to my guitar but cool vids tho..!!! percussive guitar playing is cool its just my guitar is old and very good soo if i put a hole in to it i wud never forgive myself..:L
other people are so nasty. if you dont like the video just move on. no need to have a dig at the man for trying to help YOU! i like your videos dude, funky style of playing, helped me out alot thanks alot man!!!
Hey man, i am a percussive acoustic player and i appreciate your videos. I have a question though... Which is the best pick-up setup for percussive acoustic players. I have an LR Baggs M1A and it works great apart from the kick drum which hardly makes any sound. Can you help me out?
Wicked lesson! I've been really into that percussive style of guitar for little while, I love players like Newton Faulkner, Thomas Leeb etc. I've done quite alot of it, but my beats were sometimes a tad sloppy, so really helpful.
I've noticed alot of these players use alternate tunings so I want to master one. I've tried quite a few and was just wondering what you reckon would be a good one to start off with??
i have a classical guitar but i feel like im ruining it with all the banging. im gonna buy a new one for this- are there any that you recommend? Steel/nylon/etc?
i play acoustic guitar but am looking into buying a brand new guitar as im going into percussive guitar.
any recommendations from viewers or the posters please?
also what kind of strings, nylon or steel? And I know some grow out their nails a bit to help with fingerpicking and percussive guitar, is that recommended? Thanx!
@kliao93 Cut your nails short for the fingers you'll use to press down on the strings. I have a steel. It's more common and easier to use, especially if you're trying to replicate more modern songs. Nylons are classical guitars, mainly for folky music, and have a wider neck. I'm a beginner. A friend recommended me to get Martin 3100 Coated SP Plus 80/20 Light Strings. I got a Jasmine Takamine on Amazon. Low-priced, high ratings. Good for beginners who aren't sure if they'll stick with it.
I recently cracked my guitar pretty badly doing a bass thump. I'm not overly bothered about the visable mark, but I'm very wary about playing the guitar in fear of worsening it.
Do you have any tips for reinforcing the wood like you mention i this video?
This is a great series, I bought myself an acoustic for Xmas to try this stuff out. My wrist is swolen underneath from doing the bass drum and the top of my fingers are raw from doing the hi-hat but I assume that's all part of the learning process!
I don't profess to be the best on the planet, but I do make these particular videos to help people get into percussive playing so not quite sure what exactly your trying to prove.....
@drcomwiz you fuckwit, "i'm going to be demonstrating some basic precussive guitar", that is easily one of the stupidests comments i have ever read! Tutorial=/ big fail man!
I don't understand how your hand can do the sound when you are on strings. Somebody can explain me, please ?! I hope you understand me, my english isn't very good.
i'm left handed but i play the guitar like everyone else (right handed guitarists). how the hell can i do percussive guitar? i'm hoping you can help me out.
A question: whenplaying the hi-hat sound on the strings, I invariably mute the chord... maybe I missed something, how come when you play it your chords keep ringing?
Never say never... but you'll probably be ok. Only damage I can see it doing to most pickups would be from the constant knocking making connection come loose over time.
Take care with you amp as bass drum hits though piezo pickups can put out a VERY hot signal!
Hi buddy, was trying the kick+strum technique, im having a few issues catching my knuckles on the strum. Im playing unplugged. Just by watching your playing, its seems like im letting the fingers go for the strum a little late. Do you have any tips to help with this?
i gotta a question, would you recommend plugging in an electric-acoustic guitar and turning up the volume so you won't have to hit the guitar hard and damage your instrument?
If your playing live plugging in will be essential almost all the time, (except in small venues with a very quiet audience).
But there are a couple of issues - turning up loud can give an uneven sound with certain pickups.
Undersaddle for example will not pickup much percussive work, (except when it is on the bridge) so turning up to get the percussion working will make the strings far too loud.
Also if you use other systems involving microphones internally or externally you will find feedback more of an issue. In most cases a combination of 2 pickups gives most flexibility and subjectively the best sound.
.....So yes by all mean plug in but if you have a 'very light touch' the volume boost required to make it workable will yield other problems.
I am currently studying for a BMUS degree in guitar at the ICMP in London, I have been trying to find someone who teaches this style for a LONG LONG time now, do you teach privatley? If 'yes' then
Where is home for you? and how much do you charge? If 'no' then could you recommend someone who would be able to teach me more about this style of playing please?
HI Dale, I love your playing. I've been playing percussively like this for a couple of years on my Dad's old Yamaha, which has a beautiful sound unplugged, but I've been performing at Open Mics for a few months now and the sound of the traditional pickup doesn't do the style any justice. Do you have any advice on pickup types/ configurations that might be suitable for amplified percussive playing? I've heard word of mics mixed with pickups... Cheers mate, again, i love your stuff.
no never been there. i,m from the very south. a bit too far away. but would love to see how its done. theres a guy in kerry called chris larkin making some nice guitars. a friend of mine has one.
Indeed so, I believe they said they are still in the same workshop and pretty much the same team of luthiers but without George. Just spotted you are from ireland! have you ever visited the workshop? Its fascinating!
Brilliant lesson. I am so glad I have found it. I have been playing guitar a while now and this percussive stuff is so much fun. I am going to go through all your lessons on here! Thanks a lot!
That would defeat the purpose of the whole exercise wouldn't it. Its not about playing drum beats on the guitar its about playing drum beats at the same time as adding in other things like chords, melodies & bass lines + its fun ; )
I have a K&K western mini pickup in my harp guitar which is quite responsive to percussive taps and that is glued to the bridge plate on the inside of the guitar.
If you want to get a bit Guerilla you can by piezo discs that are the size of small coindfor less than £1 each get some blue tack and stick them around the guitar till you find a position that works : )
what is your pickup, i've got the Dean Markley ProMag plus single coil pickup and i don't hear anything in the amp when i hit the body of the guitar, do you have some tips for that ?
You're a great teacher, i wanted to do percussive guitar, but i didn't know how, and now i know lol.
It is a fishman rare earth blend. It has a magnetic like yours but also has a microphone on a little goose neck inside the guitar. Though I am not using the sound from either in this video.
To pickup percussive work you need a mic or some kind of pickup that works on vibrations not the magnetic field from the metal string.
Yes and no..... It would depends on the type and the position. For example undersaddle pickups sit directly under the strings and pickup little else with any detail, you will be able to get some percussive sounds near the bridge but not much further towards or on the sides.
Piezo placed under the sound board on the inside can have better results.
I wouldn't say "hard" perhaps firmly would be a better description. Think of it like bouncing on a trampoline your hand comes down lands on the strings they move down until they hit the last fret just by your sound hole. Just after this has happened if your hand is relaxed it should bounce back up - like on a tampoline.
This technique will not be so pronounced on some guitars depending on all kinds of things, but should be able to get something useable.
Thanks Dale. I've been wanting to learn how to play percussive style for years now, but every time I tried I failed epicly. Thanks for setting me in the right direction!!
what chords did you use for that knarles barkley riff?

Very nice, but 2 questions:
1)Do you think a classical tambour (side of the thumb on the bridge) could act as a basedrum? It gives the percussion and the chord at the same time.
2)Want don' t you have a golpeador to protect your guitar; is it because it mutes the sound?
Anyway, thanks for the lessons!

I think you have to actually ring them again when doing the hi-hat hit
imixers 2 years ago
why dont you just get a drum
dylanryanmaynard 2 years ago

To pickup percussive work you need a mic or some kind of pickup that works on vibrations not the magnetic field from the metal string.

so would a piezzo work ?
gblaisg 2 years ago
Yes and no..... It would depends on the type and the position. For example undersaddle pickups sit directly under the strings and pickup little else with any detail, you will be able to get some percussive sounds near the bridge but not much further towards or on the sides.
Piezo placed under the sound board on the inside can have better results.

ok thanks, i'll try a piezo under the sound board.

Do you have to kinda hard to get a good high hat?
Can't seem to get it quite right.
You're a good teacher and very good at guitar :]
Thanks for posting

I wouldn't say "hard" perhaps firmly would be a better description. Think of it like bouncing on a trampoline your hand comes down lands on the strings they move down until they hit the last fret just by your sound hole. Just after this has happened if your hand is relaxed it should bounce back up - like on a tampoline.
This technique will not be so pronounced on some guitars depending on all kinds of things, but should be able to get something useable.
change.
