schultz was great. furthermore he reminds me a bit of benny hill in the skits where hill used a phoney comedic german accent. likewise he reminds me a bit of the king in "chitty chitty bang bang", and a bit of the toy-maker ( played by hill ) in "chitty chitty bang bang". i can practically visualize the 3 monkeys that saw no evil and heard no evil and spoke no evil. someone should put schultz's face on the 3 monkeys.

My God this is EXACTLY like what's going on NOW! OUR officials are BRIBED and BLIND to what the CORRUPT CRIMINALS are doing in the Federal Reserve, the "Carbon Tax" scam and these fake "WARS ON TERROR" which are actually troops guarding poppy fields for drug profiteers. If ol' Schultz was around now he'd be a CABINET MEMBER!
@elvis3700 lol there is one scene where he see's the tunnel enterance and couldn't care less. He wanted the war to be over so he could be friends with the POWs officialy. I love the expression John Banner put into this role.
@elvis3700 - Schultz and Klink were portrayed more sympathetically by the writers since they were members of the Luftwaffte and they hated the Gestapo agents visiting their stalag. The Gestapo agents were portrayed as the real villains in the stories.
Hogan's men would protect Schultz and Klink from being transferred to the Russian Front since tougher replacements may jeopardize their secret missions for the Allies.
thats Bullshit... he talkes like an Bavarian, not like a child.. I have seen all Episodes in German TV !!! Newkirk is talking like an English-Man with lingual titubation, Oberst Klink talks like an Saxonien Man..... the voice of Schultz between the american and the german Version are not so ,uch different... Grüße aus good old Germany
@geocgeo I still can't believe this show ever got off the ground. Concentration camp humor? As a man who was actually in the camps and worked on the show once said of Hogans Heroes: "I found the Germans to be rarely stupid and never funny".
Still though, they pulled it off. It's total nostalgia for anyone over 35.
lol yes, this is his best scene, tells the baddest of the bad where to go lol
there's another scene similar, where he immitates Klink to retrieve Newkirk, Le Beau and Carter from Stalag 5 where he says to the Kommandant "i will have you court martialed, shot AND sent to the russian front and believe me.... i can do it" lol its classic
Along with Klink. The German characters are what really made it such a great show. Schultz never knows anything and Klink is always on the verge of a nervous breakdown and over the top frustration!
The only thing I really felt bad for is that John Banner died shortly after the show was canceled.
LMMFAO!!.. that "ACHTUNG" that he belts out at 3:19 just had in me stitches.. LoL. he said it so loud that it knocked that Gestapo officer back a good foot.. he shoulda' had higher rank in the show.. see 4:27 "and if I ever report it to myself ohhhh are you going to be in trouble".. LoL.. damn he was a great actor.. no one else like him......truly classic.
Aw, I love Schulz--as strange as it is to say that about someone in the Nazi army. Nice to see him getting in some win, although of course it's on the side of the good guys.
I'd always figured it was something like that. He doesn't seem the sort of person who'd join the army out of a desire to shoot people. Far too kindly.
Exactly right- in fact, on at least one of the occasions where Schultz was told to fire at someone, he dropped his rifle out of sight and claimed he had lost it.
He and Klink are both good men when it comes down to it. Had Germany's defeat been covered in the series, the both of them would have had their names cleared by the testimonies of their own former prisoners.
The SS almost never drafted anyone into their ranks- an elite organization, the SS was supposed to be volunteer only. They only turned to drafting in desperation, late in the war. And anyway, Schultz is not at all the kind of man the SS would want, even as a draftee. He's far too kind at heart to be of much use to the SS.
What's the name of the episode where hogan and the other try to educate the Germans on talking German LOL? They even convince Schultz that Achtung is Good Morning.
That was good fun. I have to doubt that Werner Klemperer wanted Germans portrayed as foolish though since he was one, born and raised. But 'Nazis' were and rightly so as today.
Side note on John Banner, His family (along with Ron Cleary's family) were imprisoned during the war, (I believe the actor who played the Gestapo officer was Jewish also) and Banner told the producers/writers and Directors that if the Germans were ever portrayed other than "foolish" he would leave the show. Werner Kempler (famous world class violinist) also stated that. Believe it or not this was considered a controversial show (in fact they spoke german in the eary shows, but went to english)
This scene from the episode Art For Hogan's Sake is most likely shows the best performance by John Banner's(Schultz) throughout the entire series. The adieu at the end is a little much but it works.
