Much respect to Ron Lyle. His knockdown dragout war with George Foreman is legendary! My jaw dropped when I first saw it! You'd never get a heavyweight fight like that today. True boxing fans will never forget how fighters like Ron Lyle gave their all in the ring and left us with great memories of a golden era in boxing.
To judge Tyson, you must look at his opponents: Bruno? Douglas? Mercedes? Spain? Johnson? Nelson? Tilman? Mathis? Donovan?? Francis? Danny Williams, McBride? Jaco? Buster Douglas?
Great boxer? Of? course! But who did he really fought n win?
But greats like Joe Frazer! George Foreman! Ken Norton! Ernie Shavers! Sony Liston! Patterson! Ron Lyle! Chuvalo, (US Army too ) were real beasts tamed by ONE man named Muhammad Ali!
One who beats up? cuddly teddy bears like Bruno is almost a crime.
One of the few that lost to Jerry Quarry? The following fighters lost to Quarry Shavers,Mathis,Patterson,Lyle,Spencer,London and Middleton. All of those men were rated in the top ten and one was a former champion. Quarry fought Ellis with a broken back and lost a split decision. Quarry was beating the daylights out of Chuvalo when George landed a hay maker and Jerry screwed up the count .People like Cossell always acted as if Quarry was a bum.Jerry was a hell of a fighter.who never got respect.
@xxdonaldqxxx AMEN Brother. Jerry had very fast hands/combinations and could take it like few could. At a different time, he likely would have been a champion.
Bob Marley had this idea. Kind of a virologist idea. He believed that you can cure racism and hate; litterally cure it, by injecting music and love into people's lives. When he was scheduled to preform at a peace rally, a gun man came to his house and shot him down. Two days later he walked on stage and sang. Somebody asked him, "Why?" He said, "The people who are trying to make the world worse are not taking a day off. How can I? Light up the darkness."
Ali allowing himself to be pummelled on his head when he trained so he could be used to fighting hurt or so he thought was why he got parkinsons. Not when he retired. He may have been able to fight much longer.
Lol. what a great fighter Ali was. Still whooping the likes of monsters like Lyle, Foreman and Shavers, etc, when he is YEARS past his prime. LEGEND! Would be MOST interesting if a young upcoming Liston was around at this time!! CARNAGE!
I don't know why Cosell put down Lyle for losing to Jerry Quarry as Quarry was an excellent figther who beat a lot of people and besides that loss was three years before his shot at Ali. A lot of good fighters lose a fight to more experienced fighters on the way up so I think Cosell took a cheap shot at Lyle in this interview.
That very same year he fought Lyle, he should have hung up the gloves for good after his last fight, which of course took place the same year and was held in Manila. Too bad he hung around too long.
@ihatelifejosemartine only a dumb cunt would question a LEGENDS decision...too bad your still hear hanging around, since u hate life, why dont u leave earth then, lol
ali say he trains how he wants to, trains how he feels lilke it. that arrogance and idioacracy hurt him immensly in a lot of his fights. boxers have got to train 100% ALL the time. and what exactly does a trainner do ? except of course on fight night. a trainner implys he helps and makes sure his fighter trains but do they??

HOWARD COSSELL " WHY DO YOU THINK THAT YOU COULD BEAT ALI , IF YOU LOST AGAINST QUARRY AND JIMMY YOUNG"?
MR COSSEL MY ANSWER IS , GEORGE FOREMAN KILLED NORTON AND FRAZIER, AND THESE GUYS DID BEAT ALI, BUT ALI DID BEAT FOREMAN? EVERY FIGHT IS DIFFERENT

RIP Ron Lyle ~ You fought the good Fight!

Ron had no fear of Ali or anyone else.
God is cruel to big fighters, slow footed in many fights, with tremendous
heart & power in the right.
Lyle mastered in-fighting and had the advantage of working with two great
trainers, Chickie Ferrara and Eddie Futch.
Nothing but admiration for a fighter who made the 70's (along with Shavers,
Quarry & Young) the true GOLDEN AGE of HEAVYWEIGHTS.
