Mao was a genocidal psychopath, pure and simple. He said it himself, that if half of China die to bring about a communist paradise it would be all worth it. What he meant was to kill as many as needed to stay in power.
To say simply, Mao was an idealist. He meant well, but realistically he was a bit of an idiot and struggled to put his ideas into practice. He honestly thought what he was doing was correct...
@lesrazmoket I agree, while others may overgeneralize the problems. He did what he thought was right, as did many leaders before him throughout history and the world.
