I still remember when I first heard this song 15 years ago. I was a teenager, sitting in my parents car listening to the radio on my walkman when this came on. Awesome song.
They're about the singer trying to take the moral high ground and failing, discovering that his idealism turns him into a hypocrite (like everyone else) as soon as he tries to act in the real world. Instead of helping, he steals from beggars and gives to the rich, and when he tries to use the idealistic words that he's been thinking, they come out wrong. He realizes that he's just another "pig" like everyone else and tells himself he shouldn't have bothered to begin with.
This song is fucking epic! Not the most difficult to drum out, or play on bass or guitar, but the whole structure is just perfect and I am in love with Chris's amazing vocals. Soundgarden is and will always be the best grunge band, hands down.
i almost bought an $800 bass guitar bc of this song, then congratulations i would have had a badass bass guitar i have no idea what to do with or how to play......
This reminds me of my girlfriend of 3 telling me she wanted to be with another guy she was friend with. Then I stopped talking to her, and got a new girlfriend who was FUCKING GORGEOUS within a day. When my old gf did start talking...She then told me she was "just kidding" and she wanted to know what I thought if she said something like that. I didn't break up with her before I got involved with the new girl. That day, somehow I found this music video, and it fit the situation so perfectly.
like any other smash hit ths songs about heroin..pull the trigger drop the blade is shooting up and watch the rolling heads is in reference to ppl nodding out ..
I have never heard a vocal performance that even scrapes the surface of this song. Chris Cornell vocals and belting technique are superhuman! In my opinion, nobody could even touch this guy in his prime.
I got cut off, i suggest that you make a playlist with Nirvana, SG, PJ and Chains and just mix a bunch of songs from each band into this playlist and listen to it in a random order for an hour or 2. I bet you'll notice how very similar these bands really are. They all have their individual qualities but the same sound and soul to them.
I think if you don't hear the similarities in Nirvana, Soundgarden and PJ then you're just not listening. Of course they all have their own unique sound, if they didn't then they'd be irrelevant. But, they all have the same sound to me just with their own touch. And next time you name say the "Big 3 Bands from out there" (assuming you mean Seattle) please make it the "Big 4" and include AIC, without them you're comment loses much credit to me and i'm sure many others out there reading this
@thejonhendricks I woke the same as any other day, you know I should have stayed in bed. . . . . The day I tried to win I wallowed in the blood and mud with all the other pigs. And I learned that I was a liar.
The man dressed in white linen. Trying to live in the anti-verse.
Honestly its hard to even make a top grunge band lists. Considering that all their music was awesome and very different, none of the bands knew why they were all classified as grunge themselves. Grunge in its truest definition means the rockbands forming in Seattle at that time. Soundgarden were the original pioneers. RIP to all the great singers that passed on.
Have you ever seen Cornell's or other "Grunge" bands interviewed on the subject on being classified as Grunge. Grunge is a genre because we made it that way but it incorporates alot of different sounds from bands that didn't think they should have been put into the same lable. Don't be so hot tempered and quick to One up a total stranger.
I see why you say they are not grunge. However I think that grunge was kind of a BS term...so it's like, what was grunge? some grunge (pearl jam) sounded almost classic rock and some was punk (mudhoney) and soundgarden was kind of metal, black sabbath inspired.
Grunge to me is just a term used to describe some of the best rock bands to come out of Seattle in the 80's and 90's. People can call it what they want. To me it's just good music!!
@soopercoobear Agreed. The 3 big bands out of there (Nirvana, Pearl Jam and Soundgarden) have nothing in common musically except loud guitar, angst/anger and passion. All great bands, but all different sounds and all great bands in their own respect. My personal preference puts Soundgarden at the top of that scene.
It's funny, up until a couple years ago I thought STP was a Seattle band. I have no clue how I grew up as a teen in the 90's not knowing they were from LA. It still baffles me that I could be so naive, and when I found out about it about 2 or 3 years ago it blew my mind. lol
Anyways, great, great song. This is by far my favorite song Soundgarden made and one of my all time favorites from the 90's.
Probably my all time fave song, great drumming then into that full on chorus, Chris Cornell wailing like its the last song he's going to sing, wicked lyrics too, listen to them.
@omfgRyan Nah, the best California did was compliment it nicely with the funk of Red Hot Chili Peppers. Blood Sugar Sex Magic was a great CD to throw into the mix with Nevermind, Ten, & Dirt... to be fair Core, & Siamese Dream were great CDs that fit the sound well too, regardless of where the bands are from.

How fast do you do headbanging while you listen to this song? That could be the tempo. Or not.
A truly great band. His voice is as good as Led Zep's R Plant. Lyrics might be even better-engages brain heart and MIND.
Most new music-Focus grouped market tested DRM protected appeal to the maximum first step-appeals to few greatly. No honesty. Least of the problems is the DRM.
New music message--follow the herd buy buy buy be like me! Tools.
That's not a new message dude, the 90's were no different. That's why alternative died just a few years after it gained popularity, it went against the flow, and told people to think for themselves.
I think the song is about how he tries to live like the everyone else. So he steals from the poor and gives it to the rich. Basically lying and shitting on people just like so many dick wads do these days.

Just count, but it depends on the tempo. It could be quarter=130-140, then I should write 4/4 - 3/4 - 4/4 - 4/4 (or 7/4 - 4/4 - 4/4). If it was quarter=65-70, then I should write it the same as Wikipedia.
How fast do you do headbanging while you listen to this song? That could be the tempo. Or not.
Who wants to know?
Is anyone going to write a transcription?

metmanforlife31 2 years ago
It's 7/8 then 4/4, according to wikipedia
I wish I could tell a song's time signature but have no really clue :\

Each time I listen to this song's intro I stop everything I'm doing, just to listen to it quietly. One of my favorite soundgarden songs.

Thats really odd? and It's in 7/4. Just shows you how great and inovative the band is.
toadsnmarshmellows 3 years ago 2
you can't count to seven the whole song. there's just one measure of 3/4 in the main riff, otherwise it's 4/4, right?
mindlessmovieviewer 2 years ago
it's 7/8 and 4/4 alternating for the verse and chorus

A truly great band. His voice is as good as Led Zep's R Plant. Lyrics might be even better-engages brain heart and MIND.
Most new music-Focus grouped market tested DRM protected appeal to the maximum first step-appeals to few greatly. No honesty. Least of the problems is the DRM.
New music message--follow the herd buy buy buy be like me! Tools.

That's not a new message dude, the 90's were no different. That's why alternative died just a few years after it gained popularity, it went against the flow, and told people to think for themselves.

I love this song but why would he 'steal a thousand beggars change and give it to the rich'?
I would do the exact opposite.
m0bi 3 years ago
I think the song is about how he tries to live like the everyone else. So he steals from the poor and gives it to the rich. Basically lying and shitting on people just like so many dick wads do these days.
