oh no, hip hop has been slippin for a while now....maybe 6 or 7 years now...i think lil' john started the cancer of hip hop and its been spreading tremedously ever since, not totally dead though...cuz of course u still have Lupe, i think Nas is droppin another album very soon, Common, Talib Kweli(totally underated), Jay-Z, etc..there's more...like Black Thought and such but...the radio dont play these guys like that so...idk :(
Nikki Jean, you are a great person. but i dont think I totally agree with you.
So basically, you're saying that even if the younger generation makes mediocre or bad music, we shouldn't come down on them?? So that means that it's ok for Soulja Boy to make a song about skeetin on some girl's back and putting a bedsheet on her?
Our youth listen to his crap.. and to say that it's ok because he's expressing himself or whatever, is just bullcrap.
Ice-T may have came to hard.. but some of it was needed
Hi Nikki Jean. I agree with your opinion, at least what you shared with us. I am not a big fan of a lot of hip hop artist, but I don't think it's dead at all, it's just changing and evolving with it's listeners, the times, and the situations of life that influence it. Wow...enjoy NY! My dream has always been to live there, maybe i can visit. ;o)
hip hop is dead becuz of the consumers...if you request it on radio, vote for it on tv, buy the albums or support dead hip hop in any way, then most likely ur the reason it died.
if you dont want it to die then start supporting true talented hip hop artist.
first of all i wanna say hello to nikki jean because i haven't commented in forever. i wanna say thank you for the guest appearnces while you were on tour, relally appreciated that as for the ice t soulja boy thing... ice t is a grown man. why he addressed a minor that sort of disregard is beyond me.
i think he was just heated and things got pulled out of context...in soulja's defense...he did not and CANNOT single handedly KILL hip hop. hip hop is an art form. it speaks volumes about who its listeners are. if its listeners and followers are as substance less as the music it is then i feel sorry for you. but i don't believe ANYONE takes this stuff seriously. it's about entertainment. what's going to cause the most commotion. and then later it dies. its not REAL hip hop.
its gotten away from its roots and i think that's why ice t made the comments he made. with that being said...ice t is a grown man and should know that telling a 17 year old bot...on the radio to well i ain't even gone say it, will cause an uproar of controversy. any way with all that being said, let's keep good music alivee. let's let the music reflect who we are. and i hope that superman crap is NOT who we are...i sincerely hope lol
Yeah, I hear u Nikki...i definitely agree that Ice-T was in the wrong for comin @ Soulja Boy like that. He definitely 2 old 4 that...but on the other end, Soulja Boy is not my idea of a great artist. He doesn't really say too much of anything in my opinion.
Hip Hop can never be compared to Rock music. Rock changes but no one enters rock tomake money. They all enter wanting to be famous and make good music. I think hip hop is DYING because there are too many rappers in it for the money over the love of the genre & culture (ex. Soulja Boy, Ace Hood)
I ASSUMED that the stupid super man song was about that, but I didn't want to put my foot in my mouth. You know what they say about people who assume. Well, atleast now I have info to back it up!!!

real hip hop isnt main stream its underground aka dead.I dont think this main stream music deserves the title hip hop.I make all kinds of music and I appreciate it all no matter if it has substance or not its someones creative work and deserves respect but it needs its own title like i said before bubble gum rap alternative hip hop club hop something.lets go and watch videos on what hip hop is.look up krs one stuff he can explain it.making money is to blame for the death of HHop
I'll disagree that Soulja Boy single handedly killed hip hop, but he's pretty damn horrible. It's grammy nominated for rap but why? The song is about him owning gear from A Bathing Ape. And as far as I know, when you "superman" someone, it's when you cum on a girl's back and put a towel over it to dry and stick on her back. Yeah, real fucking substance in a number one hit. The song is about nothing except for some stupid looking dance. I don't blame Soulja boy, I blame mainstream music.
I think that Ice T was wrong for doing what he did but you can't REALLY point out one person and say that they killed hip hop when hip hop was already dead. For people to say you can't penalize him for making up dance tracks, it is so much more than that. Super man that hoe? That is so disrespectful, esp. for a person his age. Someone stated that he is 17, he should act like it. He was cursing just like Ice T was. Ice T son was wrong and that boy was wrong too!!
hip hop is not dead...the old school hip hop is dead. hip hop is evolving, artist are becoming more creative. to quote nikki about her brothers music "sometimes its good, sometimes its GREAT, sometimes is not so good" or jus horrible (i can name a few people who jus...i wonder how they sell records) but with artist like lupe fiasco, kanye, wayne, and jay out there, no one who ever loved hip hop or knows anythin about it could say its died. even with new artist like drake. i like where hip hop is

The difference is when it is constantly whack, with no change, and yet you still continue. I like my music with substance. I like a meaning behind music.

It sucks but as long as there are a small amount of people that I can listen to I'm content, but I'd rather be happy or estatic with the state of hip hop.
im happy with the state of hip hop (at least there is still a state of hip hop) but, im more of a glass half full type person. i know the future of hip hop is gonna be insane. wen i think about the state of hip hop 5-10 odd years ago...those were times to be worried...but right now? absolutely not, there will always be sum lil artist that come our for there 15min of fam then dissappear so im not trippin

Oh, and as far as hip hop being dead goes. I wouldn't go so far as to classify it as such, nor would i call it alive because of sales. I think the life of hip hop depends on the soul and quality of what it makes. Measure that with profit? Na. Hip hop is done for the love of it. Not the love of money. Keep in mind whether you realize it or not, love of money is the reason it's in the state it's in.
Wow out of every blog u have ever released not 1 has never failed to put a smile on my face It seems like u were kind of moved by the "eat a dick" comment but u still kept your composure and I Thank u for that...If there were more people like you this planet would really be a special place for all mankind...Say yes to Nikki and no to drama Peace !!
whoever said soulja boy is rap and lupe is hip hop...man...hip hop is a culture. i don't really wanna be on one of those elements of hip hop tip, but its way more than a genre of music, and Soulja Boi, by the mere fact that he associates with and self-identifies as hip hop IS hip hop..that's like me telling someone they aren't american because they are different than me
Except from this not being true, it doesn't make any sence at all(since hip-hop is all about being different/original).
Soulja boy is a pop artist and it ends there. How can you claim to be hip-hop when you do it for the love of money and not music? When you sell yourself to labels and fans? When you don't try to master the art nor care about it? WHEN YOU DON'T KNOW WHO THE PIONERS ARE? When you promote stupidity trough your music? When you don't try to be original and make hip-hop advance?
OMG I sooooo agree with you!!! I tell everyone that the "hip hop" music that they listen to is POP!! With it's repetitive verses. Pop is repetitive to catch children's attention. I call it candy music.
2) hip hop never said it was about being different or creative...it is about expressing oneself
3)just because you don't think it's creative, that doesnt make it not so
4) alot of the "pioneers" that you speak of rapped about silly ish too...will smith? run dmc? kool keith? did they have deep messages? hip hop is not just krs ones and public enemies...it is an entire CULTURE...again I say, if u disagree with my political views, are you not american?
I agree with yunboyfresh. I think soulja boy is kinda a slap in the face of all the hardworking hip hop artists out there who put in so much thought and effort in their work just to be heard or maintain what they're doing, that for... Dudes like him to throw something together so playfully and thoughtless, it's disrespectful almost. And the young ones eat up them sesame st caliber material. As if it hurts to think...
the only real hip hop left are those like talib jean grea Daily planet Kev brown nas premo little bother 9th wonder LMNO and a few other dudes that messing with what hip hop is. We just don't want to let go of hip hop. bubble gum hip hop would be a good term for the music out now. then you have the dirty, mid west, hyphe or what ever it is.
dont get me wrong I love all music and I respect those who are making it big.lets not forget what hip hop really is
ask kanye to ask Jay z why did he pump the brakes on Joe Budden. Joey is the truth. A Joe Budden and Nas track would have been sick.
Half these clowns don't know what hip hop is. the think its just rap and beat. hip hop has changed and never will be the same. Rock music is still the same but they have so many genres like alternative rock. hip hop is dead(because it doesn't make money) because nobodies doing it anymore. lets all welcome alternative hip hop. different music different age.
who came up with the hiphop is dead thing. i think nas did? it's insulting to all the hiphop artists mainstream and underground who are continuing to make great music.
what bothers me is when ppl ONLY listen to soulja boy and thinks that's the limit, that's what hiphop is ALL about. i don't mind listening to the song, but when people, especially those that don't listen to hiphop sees soulja boy and his lyrics as the epitome of our cutlure, it's irritating.
and by the way i dont want to take up for soulja boy. because im not a fan. i was just saying basically based on rhyme schemes the early rap was real basic also .
Soulja Boy did not kill hip-hop. He's just a victim following a trend. If you want to blame someone, blame Young Jeezy, D4L, 50 Cent, dfb and any other motherfucker that was big in the past ten years.
By that, I'm not defending him. I still think that his music is worthless crap. But saying that he single-handly killed hip-hop is just dumb.
soulja boy is wack but he is no wacker then alot of early hip hop . Remember when rappers rapped funny ? then people like Rakim and Biggy changed their flows up. so it will always Evolve and Recycle. ( just my opinion ) im not mad at anybody. Hip Hop aint going no where. Rap is changing tho and it will come back around. dont worry.
Nikki Jean is Beautiful and her opinion made sense.
Please. Do you see soulja boy rapping anything relevant or positive? Do you see him trying to make original music? DO you see him trying to master the art of rapping? No. The only things he promote trough his music are: buy this, by that, don't read books, etc. etc. This is not what hip-hop is about, and in no way similar to "alot of early hip hop" as you are saying. The rap industry today is all about appealing to the public, not being original and making money.
i cant take it;something is wrong with y'all.look..soulja boy did what he had to do to make it,but that doesn't justify that his music is good.cause it's not at all.and i know his not a lyricist, but even musically he's not that good.y'all claim that he makes dance music.but truth be told, thats crap dance music.and i got nothin against dance music, but at least it gotta be hot like "Alice Deejay- Better Off Alone""R.Kelly-Happy People"or even"Mystical- Shake That Ass"...
But back to the subject.yea Ice T is wrong for what he did,but so was soulja boy.and it is what it is...a spade is a spade..hence a Black Thought is an overly gifted Emcee, while a SB is not even close as gifted.and im being completely subjective.Soulja claimed he worked hard..but nigga, Black Thought and The Roots worked WAY HARDER their whole lives and are way more talented than SB.yet SB easely goes plat, while The Roots been ignored for 14 years?
and i know it's everyone's free will who they wanna listen to.but i dont get it..BT, Lupe, and Common are way better than these kids flyin in the air in their songs, it's evident..imagine if Nikki sold her soul for riches and COMPLETELY dumbed it down like soulja boy?Imagine that..obviously she gon have to dumb it down lil bit: sellin' her sexiness, and go Pop to sell records.but we all know Nikki cant be her whole real self, and real musically; cause it wont sell..it's politics man.
hip hop today lacks substance and meaning its coo to party dance and have fun but that isnt what hip hop is about if people truly want change they need to gather in large masses and demand it thats the only way a diverse perspective will be delievered by the media
i think the kind of music that Soulja Boy makes [dancing/snapping, shake that ass, i got money..and so on] should have its own genre. i dont care what anyone says...and i have Soulja Boy's album on iTunes right now but he is NOT hip hop and he shouldn't be classified as an hip hop artist. not just talkin about him though. not going to name names and get off tangent but there r a lot of bullshit MCs out right now gettin paid for not sayin a got damn thing.
As far as other genres with artists beefing with each other like in Rock and Roll, well, they did but it was usually expressed through their music. Look at Hendrix vs. The Who, or Blur vs. Oasis, or Red Hot Chili Peppers vs. Faith No More. A lot of that is just hype created by the media anyways. It used to be like that with Hip-Hop, but we should learn from 2Pac and Biggie how that lead to a wrong path.
I'm not gonna say that Ice-T is absolutely right about his comment. But he is true when he says that the war should be "good Hip-Hop versus bad Hip-Hop". Ice-T came from an era when Hip-Hop groups put out some amazing stuff from Public Enemy to Eric B and Rakin to A Tribe Called Quest. So he has a right to feel that Soulja Boy symbolizes Hip-Hop taking a step backwards.
At first i thought hip hop would not be going in a good direction, but now seeing how people like solja boy is taking a different approach to it that just made me think maybe hip hop is going through a reboot. Not everything that is good stays that way and everything that is knocked down isnt down for the count. To get upset over his music which is his own voice is like saying you disagree and you are insecure about what he has to say since you cant say something on your own anymore.
Old school Rock N Roll artist do scorn offshoots of contemporary rock n roll music. But there are two differences:
1. old school rock n roll artists don't make their grievances personal towards other artist, just the music.
2. roll n roll fans don't create a media circus out of every comment or beefs one artist have with another.
The personal attacks accompanied by the media attention creates this environment where artist are waiting for an opportunity to vent against another artist.
Another point, Soulja Boy is just 17. So, of course, he going to rap about bullshit teenage issue like dancing and getting D's on his report card. Even if he exerts more effort into becoming lyrical, he will not be at the level of any artist we currently favor, such as Lupe, Kanye, Lil Wayne, etc.
Tyga is the same age and far more lyrical than Soulja Boy, and whats the result? 6,700 copies sold in his first week. Sad!
Yes, I have been thinking about that, too. How people are always concerned about the way hip hop is going but rock can just do whatever it wants? And people complain about rock, but hip hop lovers are always always having to defend themselves and it just doesn't seem right or fair or even logical.
Ice T needs to reevaluate his approach. Soulja made some good points in his rebuttal-- If Ice T thinks hip hop is dead then he needs to GO DO SOMETHING about it instead of parading around with his blow up doll wife and throwing childish insults at people who less than half his age.
Forreal though.. For Ice T to say that Soulja boy single-handedly killed hip-hop is an insult to such current artists as kanye and lupe and common.. All the AMAZING music they have put out recently and ONE song from Soulja boy can override all their musical/lyrical talent? That is an insult an it was unnecessary. And, I'm sorry, I can't take anyone seriously who tells someone to "go eat a dick" s
Okay, I finally watched what all this hullabaloo is about. People need to understand that this is a young boy who is fascinated with money. Why? because he had ABSOlUTELY NOTHING. He is doing this for the money, and not to appease any musical fetish. I now respect soulja boy. He is 2 years younger than me and made more in 1 year than I probably will in 5 and I have 50 bucks to my name right now. He is making money. No, he's not helping music, but he is helping his family. That's respectful
Uhm... no. If he USED to be an artist and then started doing it for the money, he is a sell-out. I think a boy who is not even in college yet doing whatever is legal to become a success story is respectful.
I love your intelligence and upbeat structure. I agree with you in what you said.pretty much everything..Hip Hop is not dead because I'm still breathing it. I mean like the rhyme goes "They say Hip Hop is dead, But I'll forever be a HipHop head"

Ok.. let's say that that isn't what the song is about.
But, in the uncensored version of the song.. the first sentence of the chorus is
"Soulja boy up in that hoe".
Now tell me that that isn't inappropriate.

DirtyHunGoneWild 3 years ago
Soulja Boy did not kill hip-hop. He's just a victim following a trend. If you want to blame someone, blame Young Jeezy, D4L, 50 Cent, dfb and any other motherfucker that was big in the past ten years.
By that, I'm not defending him. I still think that his music is worthless crap. But saying that he single-handly killed hip-hop is just dumb.
yunboyfresh 3 years ago
soulja boy is wack but he is no wacker then alot of early hip hop .
H U N hunnnn
DirtyHunGoneWild 3 years ago
The rap industry today is all about appealing to the public, not being original and making money.
yunboyfresh 3 years ago
People are still confusing rap and hip-hop
Hip-hop contains many elements including rap, and even then... people have always commented about club rap music, some like it some dislike...
If you believe that Hip-hop is dead or hurtful to the community, then you truly dont understand the culture at all

i cant take it;something is wrong with y'all.look..soulja boy did what he had to do to make it,but that doesn't justify that his music is good.cause it's not at all.and i know his not a lyricist, but even musically he's not that good.y'all claim that he makes dance music.but truth be told, thats crap dance music.and i got nothin against dance music, but at least it gotta be hot like "Alice Deejay- Better Off Alone""R.Kelly-Happy People"or even"Mystical- Shake That Ass"...
Schneider763 3 years ago
But back to the subject.yea Ice T is wrong for what he did,but so was soulja boy.and it is what it is...a spade is a spade..hence a Black Thought is an overly gifted Emcee, while a SB is not even close as gifted.and im being completely subjective.Soulja claimed he worked hard..but nigga, Black Thought and The Roots worked WAY HARDER their whole lives and are way more talented than SB.yet SB easely goes plat, while The Roots been ignored for 14 years?
Schneider763 3 years ago
and i know it's everyone's free will who they wanna listen to.but i dont get it..BT, Lupe, and Common are way better than these kids flyin in the air in their songs, it's evident..imagine if Nikki sold her soul for riches and COMPLETELY dumbed it down like soulja boy?Imagine that..obviously she gon have to dumb it down lil bit: sellin' her sexiness, and go Pop to sell records.but we all know Nikki cant be her whole real self, and real musically; cause it wont sell..it's politics man.

hip hop today lacks substance and meaning its coo to party dance and have fun but that isnt what hip hop is about if people truly want change they need to gather in large masses and demand it thats the only way a diverse perspective will be delievered by the media

i think the kind of music that Soulja Boy makes [dancing/snapping, shake that ass, i got money..and so on] should have its own genre. i dont care what anyone says...and i have Soulja Boy's album on iTunes right now but he is NOT hip hop and he shouldn't be classified as an hip hop artist. not just talkin about him though. not going to name names and get off tangent but there r a lot of bullshit MCs out right now gettin paid for not sayin a got damn thing.

It used to be like that with Hip-Hop, but we should learn from 2Pac and Biggie how that lead to a wrong path.
therealsoulproduct 3 years ago
I'm not gonna say that Ice-T is absolutely right about his comment. But he is true when he says that the war should be "good Hip-Hop versus bad Hip-Hop". Ice-T came from an era when Hip-Hop groups put out some amazing stuff from Public Enemy to Eric B and Rakin to A Tribe Called Quest. So he has a right to feel that Soulja Boy symbolizes Hip-Hop taking a step backwards.
therealsoulproduct 3 years ago 2
At first i thought hip hop would not be going in a good direction, but now seeing how people like solja boy is taking a different approach to it that just made me think maybe hip hop is going through a reboot. Not everything that is good stays that way and everything that is knocked down isnt down for the count. To get upset over his music which is his own voice is like saying you disagree and you are insecure about what he has to say since you cant say something on your own anymore.

O.K! So you don't think that the quality of Hip-Hop these days has seriously diminished? Not all of Hip-Hop
of course, but most of it. Come on?!
I mean can you believe that todays Hip-Hop allows rappers like 50 Cent to exist?!
Man! We have truly come a long way from quality music like "Illadelph Halflife" "Illmatic" "Ready To Die" and "7 Day Theory"

The personal attacks accompanied by the media attention creates this environment where artist are waiting for an opportunity to vent against another artist.
hollyhoodjoe123 3 years ago
But other than that, Nikki is right-on.

TherapyMeee 3 years ago 2
Forreal though.. For Ice T to say that Soulja boy single-handedly killed hip-hop is an insult to such current artists as kanye and lupe and common.. All the AMAZING music they have put out recently and ONE song from Soulja boy can override all their musical/lyrical talent? That is an insult an it was unnecessary. And, I'm sorry, I can't take anyone seriously who tells someone to "go eat a dick" s
TherapyMeee 3 years ago 2
Okay, I finally watched what all this hullabaloo is about. People need to understand that this is a young boy who is fascinated with money. Why? because he had ABSOlUTELY NOTHING. He is doing this for the money, and not to appease any musical fetish. I now respect soulja boy. He is 2 years younger than me and made more in 1 year than I probably will in 5 and I have 50 bucks to my name right now. He is making money. No, he's not helping music, but he is helping his family. That's respectful
quitejaded 3 years ago
So you respect soulja-boy for being a sell-out?
yunboyfresh 3 years ago
Uhm... no. If he USED to be an artist and then started doing it for the money, he is a sell-out. I think a boy who is not even in college yet doing whatever is legal to become a success story is respectful.
quitejaded 3 years ago
Ice T is just trying to start some drama to make money. How many times have we seen this before in music?
