  • This is the first mic I ever bought, Still my primary

  • What Is Better For Recording Raps and Singing? THE SHURE PG27 OR SHURE PG42?

  • One question. I do dubbing amateur, what matters to me is the voice, what should I buy a Shure PG or SM? If I answer with some examples would be great. thank you very much.

  • I'm planning on upgrading from a Samson C01U ( for recording vocals). Will the Shure PG42USB give a significal improvement or should I rather go non-usb? I would be willing to invest a maximum of 350 $, so I was thinking to go for this mic. Just wanna hear your opinion. Thanks.

  • I've had my eye on this for awhile now. Thanks for the video. This just gives me more reassurance of how great of a mic this is. Buying this for $250 is a steal. Other comparable sounding mics are selling for $1k+.

  • PG42usb or PG27usb? The PG42usb comes with case and shockmount worthing 100 dollar. But the price difference is only 50 dollar. Does it mean that the PG27usb is better than the PG42usb in this case? PG27usb sounds kinda crisper and colder, while PG42usb sounds warmer and silkier. I wanna buy a mic for vocal cover. I heard that flat frequency response is good for reproduction, while the PG27usb is flatter. But I prefer the original sound of the PG42usb. So confused of me. Can you help me out?

  • @eggdanny

Gotta say that the 27USB is my all-time favorite. As you said, ultra crisp for voice.

For accuracy, the 42USB has the edge.

    Just my opinion.

    Best,

    Mark

  • @NewMediaGear yeah, i found that the bass of the 42USB is kinda too small. so do you think the shockmount is necessary? if not, i would like to go for the 27 as you said. LOL

  • Where have you bought this one, because I've been looking for this one to buy, but then I find one, there's only the microphone and no picture of something else included.

  • Hi How Come I connect my PG42 to my soundcard and it doesnt work?

  • is the Shure PG42usb better than the samson co3u usb mic

  • @joshorrorr

Hard to say if it's better, since most mics are a matter of taste and use.

Personally, I prefer the PG27USB over the C03U and PG42USB. The 27USB doesn't come with the nice shock mount, but I was very impressed with the sound and performance.

    ...just my opinions.

    Best,

    Mark

  • I got the XLR Version for stage use in Church. Man what a great mic.....I used it last Sunday to do a special and it performed like a champ. The singer and myself stood side by side about 3 to 4 ft from the mic and it was heard and recorded really great. Many compliments on the sound and song we did.......

  • I was about to get the PG27 mic...and i went all the way to buy it and they were out of PG27's so the guy was kind enough to give me the PG42 for 200 dollars...They did mention that PG 27 is multi purpose so i was a little thoughtful about letting it go...and then i thought what the hell how much of a difference will it make...:) Definitely a good buy.

  • Hello sir, I'm from mexico. and seeking a usb condenser microphone for recording rap, which you think is best PG27 or pg42? or some other model that is not too expensive, not English and so used a translator, thanks :D

  • is this microphone windows 7 compatible as well?

  • @KingDaAce

Not sure about being 'officially' certified, but it did work fine on my Win 7 Home Premium and Ultimate 64-bit machines.

  • Will this microphone work with windows 7 home premium? it says it's compatible with xp and vista but i'm just wondering if it would work with windows 7 also.

  • does it come with a shock mount?

  • @KingDaAce

The 42 does come with a custom, very unique looking shock mount ...and carry case.

  • is there a difference between the xlr version and the usb version? and if the shure x2u is going to be used on the xlr version of the 42, will it be the same as the usb version? I just ordered a shure sm57 pg42 and x2u converter, I just think that your opinion is very valuable. Thank you for these reviews. kudos sir

  • @respilicious

I went with the PG42 (non-USB) version because the XLR offers more flexibility in studio. Surprisingly, the USB version sounded more 'crisp' to me.

There are so many variables (processing, pre-amp, A/D etc), that I'm not sure where the difference lies. It would be interesting to use the X2u on the 42 (XLR) and find if it sounds closer to the 42USB? I suspect it would.

Anyway - you decided on 2 excellent mics and I hope you enjoy them both!

    Thank you for the comment.

  • Overall, for podcasting and screencasts, which microphone comes out on top? The PG42 or the PG27? I would appreciate to know, thank you.

    -Great video!

  • @AppleGenius0921

Tough call. Shure tags the 42 as a 'vocal' microphone because of a small articulation bump in the speech area.

I actually preferred the cheaper 27, which Shure calls multi-purpose.

Besides the 42 including a shock-mount, my ears didn't detect a huge difference.

Remember - there is a PG27 (XLR only; no USB) as well as the PG27USB. The 42 also is available in XLR OR USB models.

    Thanks for the comment.

  • Hello, I'm just wondering what's the shockmount for this mic? I'm planning on purchasing the PG27.

  • @respilicious

It's a custom designed shockmount, just for this series. There is a large screw-on collar at the base and that is where the mount attaches.

The model 27 does not come with a shock mount.

  • @NewMediaGear

But doesnt the 42 have the same body as the 27? so shure isnt selling it in the shurelock line up?

  • @respilicious

Both the 27 and 42 have the same physical body, but the Shure-quoted specs are slightly different in SPL, output and frequency response.

  • I want to get this mic, but I can't seem to find any available in stores. Don't want to get it online though.

  • I went to the store to buy one of these and they said it would not work with my 64-bit OS windows vista... I went to the website and it said it is compatible... anybody tried it out for themselves?

  • Mark, did you notice any static noise with this mic? Some people blame Shure XLR2USB for hissing. I wonder if this noise has anything to do with PG42USB.

  • @tavrichesky

    Hello,

The noise floor on this mic was very acceptable. I did not measure it, but both the digitized and pre-digital audio (headphone amp) was just what I would expect for the price range. One thing that worked very well was the adjustable mic gain, allowing you to find the sweet spot into the A/D.

I liked this series so much, I bought one.

  • Thanks.

  • dude this mic is so awesome its insane!

  • Mark, I would like to commend you on your reviews. Your reviews include both "practical application" and "objective discovery". Most other reviewers don't give an actual "sampling" of the product, just an opinion, stats rantings, and sometimes "fanboi" unboxings (sic). . When I need new gear, I start at NewMediaGear! Keep up the great work. Suggestion: add a lower 3rd or sidebar of a signal block diagram of equipment/components used during your review.

  • I really appreciate the comment. These make it all worthwhile.

A lot of people ask about the audio chain and interface. That make a good show?

  • Hey Again Mark,

I tested it a little bit and what I noticed was that on my Input I had it on the Shure. Which was fine my Output was built in headphones. I changed it to Shure so both are on the Shure. That ended up fixing the bathroomy echo sound. How do you have it set up?

  • Hi Eric,

Be sure to set your operating system (and application, if that option is available) to Shure Digital.

Setting the input and output to the mic not only allows zero-latency monitoring, but also lets you monitor backing tracks/effects in a multi-track editor.

Have fun! I just ordered my 2nd PG42. 1 USB model and 1 XLR.

  • Hey again! Sorry for the comments this will be the last I promise. I've been trying my new pg42 thanks to you. I'm hearing a little echo/bathroomy in my headphones and in the replay. I don't hear this from my other mics in the same room. Any ideas?

  • Hi Eric,

Since it's a (large diaphragm) condenser, this mic can be very sensitive compared, compared to dynamics.

First, the room or area itself should be fairly 'dead'. ...a minimum of acoustic reflections

Try turning the mics gain level down and re-adjust the headphone monitor.

The bottom line is likely compensating for the room acoustics.

Let me know how it goes.

    Best,

    Mark

  • Thx Mark sweet review and it sounds great! Looks like I'm sold now!

  • You'll probably notice, the amplitude is low. I didn't even normalize.

The audio is just as it was recorded with no processing at all.

...probably should have normalized, but I think it came out ok?

    Thanks for tuning in!

  • nice

  • Thanks!
