Good call. I'm 24 and I'm middle class so I don't have much $ to throw around but there is something more important than that YOUR TIME and EFFORT. I do volunteer work and help out. U R right about questioning people who say they would be like Newman in terms of motive and actions if they had $. But just like you implied, people would opt to help themselves first before helping others. It's an extreme survival instinct. I'm learning to spread wealth in finance class...like Paul did.
I'm sure Slovakia is a beautiful country but I think his parents wanted very much to integrate into American society, so maybe they didn't tell young Paul much about his background. Also it was only his mother who was Slovakian, his father was from somewhere else.
I didn't know that, but it sounds about right. Paul was always happiest to portray himself as the quintessentially American male, as did Robert Redford. That image was what sold a lot of his movies, so I guess that was about marketing himself.
It's kind of a shame that he didn't visit Slovakia just once, but a lot of Americans who settle down in the USA don't ever go back to their roots. They get used to just living where they are and living their American lifestyles.

I'm British by the way so this isn't out of any kind of bias, I'm just guessing.
There seems to be some confusion about his origins : his mother was born in a Catholic family in the village of Pticie (formerly Peticse) and, at the time of her birth, it belonged to the former Kingdom of Hungary, but it's now in Slovakia. PN did travel to Hungary (the last time in 2006) to visit the Hole in the Wall Camp that was founded there. As for his father (born in Cleveland), he always said he was of "German Jewish origin", though his own parents were born in Hungary and Poland !

I hope Steve does not meet the same fate. But I thank all three of them for what they gave me...IDOLS to cherish.

Good call. I'm 24 and I'm middle class so I don't have much $ to throw around but there is something more important than that YOUR TIME and EFFORT. I do volunteer work and help out. U R right about questioning people who say they would be like Newman in terms of motive and actions if they had $. But just like you implied, people would opt to help themselves first before helping others. It's an extreme survival instinct. I'm learning to spread wealth in finance class...like Paul did.

I'm sure Slovakia is a beautiful country but I think his parents wanted very much to integrate into American society, so maybe they didn't tell young Paul much about his background. Also it was only his mother who was Slovakian, his father was from somewhere else.

I didn't know that, but it sounds about right. Paul was always happiest to portray himself as the quintessentially American male, as did Robert Redford. That image was what sold a lot of his movies, so I guess that was about marketing himself.
It's kind of a shame that he didn't visit Slovakia just once, but a lot of Americans who settle down in the USA don't ever go back to their roots. They get used to just living where they are and living their American lifestyles.

I agree with you that age might have had something to do with it. But he didn't go when he was younger either - I guess we won't ever know the reason why. I think his first home was always the US of A.
I'm British by the way so this isn't out of any kind of bias, I'm just guessing.

There seems to be some confusion about his origins : his mother was born in a Catholic family in the village of Pticie (formerly Peticse) and, at the time of her birth, it belonged to the former Kingdom of Hungary, but it's now in Slovakia. PN did travel to Hungary (the last time in 2006) to visit the Hole in the Wall Camp that was founded there. As for his father (born in Cleveland), he always said he was of "German Jewish origin", though his own parents were born in Hungary and Poland !

Thanks again for the Dvd reference. I still want to learn more about his life when he was a kid going through school and more about his naval service during WW2 in the Naval Air Corps. I am a veteran myself and i trained through the Aircrew program. I wish to read more about his experiences before he became a movie star. Any books you guys know of?........ Thanks

Tell me then, if you are barely making enough to survive, how much money can you give to charity? How many orphan kids can you adopt? How much time do you have to help others? How much money can you donate to a worthy cause? ...none.
I hope you realize that politicians are people too. If you don't trust people to do the right thing with their own money, I hope you don't expect corrupt politicians to do any better. Afterall they have to pay off their campaign contributors to get re-elected.

Paul was so amazing... yet so humble and not like the people who pretend to be humble or charitable ( read.. bono.. and other rich stars who talk the talk but dont walk the walk) . A prophet and saint is always missed and not really recognized in his own city and time.. but time will see to it Paul is a saint.. one of the VERY few real ones..

I first saw Paul when I went to the movie with my boyfriend, Bill. Bill looked like Paul and had the same kindness in his eyes and heart. I loved them both for 55 years. My husband, Bill, passed away from cancer 4 days before Paul died of cancer. I miss them both. And now the other love of my life, Steve Jobs, is ill with cancer. I hope Steve does not meet the same fate. But I thank all three of them for what they gave me...IDOLS to cherish.

If I can give some advice to those who, like me, are disgusted by some slanderous comments : don't waste your time with the persons who utter them, they don't deserve it. Like you, I once took the trouble to answer but, with such narrow-minded people, it's useless. They are cowards, hiding behind their anonymity to bring accusations (without any proof) and it is all the more contemptible as they attack a man who has done so much for others. I wonder what THEY do for others : surely nothing .
