You can talk about the scores and if they are deserved or not all day long but in the end, you are never going to be able to get rid of questionable scores as long as figure skating is a sport that is judged.
There was a judge who gave him a neutral ( 0 ) GOE for that second triple axel and triple lutz (might not be the same judge) .... overall he still got 7.49 for the 3A
Kozuka got neutral GOEs all over the place for jumps he landed well. Whether it is 6.0 or COP, when the judges like you, they can give you any score .... they are going to start pushing up his PCS more ... soon he will be able to get 100 points just from PCS.
@lutz84 Nobody was clean in this competition, maybe judges just tried to encourage Patrick, he didn´t skate a clean program since 2009 Worlds, if I remember well. He improved since last season, he added quads too, maybe the judges are pleased with his programs and his efforts.
He IS good, no doubt and a great skate: jumps, transitions, footwork etc., but wow... I agree... VERY high score... maybe there's something they see "live" I don't quite get from watching it here?
The presentation scores have always been Chan's strength. Add a quad to the mix and his technical score goes up even with a few fumbles in his program. He has so many steps and footwork in bewtween all his jumps and spins that no one else in the world can match that. He never just strokes around the ice and builds to his jump like everyone else.
It might be worth mentioning that the Free Skate world record is held by Daisuke Takahashi from the 2008 Four Continents; an amazing performance where he earned 175.84 points. He also had a couple of errors with landings, thus made some noticeable mistakes just like P. Chan did.
@Fubarspiff It´s difficult to say who helds the record because the base value of elements changed a lot of times since they introduced the COP. ISU should calculate the scores everytime they change something, their top scores ranking is absolutely irrelevant.
@SimonaCB That is very true, and you have a very good point. I was just pointing to everyone out that a very high score can be awarded to a skater who displays exceptional skill, despite a couple of errors.
@Fubarspiff It was only an observation about the ISU ranking but of course, even with small errors a skater can get a high score if he displays exceptional skill in a competition. Dai´s program in 2008 was amazing, doesn´t even matter if it helds the record or not.
Despite his two errors, and I won't call them mistakes, becasue he went for everything, and just messed up the landings. No one can touch mis musicality, he's awesome! Thankfully, some one in our men's canadian team that we can rely on, moreso than several other in the past. AND he's not robotic
It's awesome he has finally gotten his quad, and frankly quite consistent....no one has a consistent quad anyways..... The score is a little high and there goes the subjectivity of the judging panel, wherein they skate near flawless in one competition and the next muck a few things up and get an even higher one? Not all the time but sometimes.
A truly amazing and inspirational performance. I think his footwork really is awesome and complex, which makes it so exciting to watch. Not sure if everyone knows this, but if you do jumps in the 2nd half of your program you get extra points. I would assume that the theory is b/c during the 2nd half your energy is more spent. Mr. Chan positions himself to do several jumps in the 2nd half of his programs. Stop hating on him, people.
@TheKashMunee so i said that before i watched it.... seriously wtf, i only saw the score sheet and assumed it was flawless because of the goe's and no deductions, she def did no deserve 174 :P but w/e, nobu and taka still medalled too so I'm happy
@HelTra91 the only score that was higher than this is the one Takahashi got in 2008 4CC (175.84). Even though there happened some changes in base value, he did 2 very clean quads, 2 beautiful axels and all other triples with just one slight mistake.
incredible

i don't think his programs can be beaten. They are Olympic caliber. it's a matter of hitting those jumps.

He deserved that score the judges judge based on the other performances of the other skaters and compared to that in overall Patrick surpassed them

dahria1977 1 year ago
