Well, Obama did suspend all construction projects on future oil rigs. He just did a big favor for big oil. Now, they have essentially a fixed supply, which keeps prices up. Normally, they would build more rigs, increase supply and then prices would fall, assuming government would not tax it. And now, the government tax on oil, which oil prices is high, helps the federal government. For the love of god, exploit every opportunity for energy in-dependency!
You don't need the government to go into new ventures, If it was economically more efficient to use solar and wind, then more investments will go there. People still use oil because oil is cheaper. Only reason Nuclear isn't used is because government is extremely restrictive of it.
Wind and solar are a.) too expensive, b.) too inefficient, c.) take too much land. She'd have a lot more credibility if she at least made an attempt to talk about nuclear. In regards to Chile, It is argued that economic freedom brought about democracy. Kline is lacking in comprehension of the moral nature of political power and how IT is the source of systemic social corruption.
Friedman is by no means always correct, but his theories are held in much higher regard than anything Kline has put forth.

There was a democratically elected government in Chile at the time, and Pinochet was closer to a fascist dictator after taking power. OK, so we agree that speculators drove up the cost of oil because they thought it would continue to climb. This legislation they are talking about was passed, there for speculators believed more oil would come into the market and prices would decrease, and the prices did indeed decrease after the leg was passed. The Great Depression, which was caused by government "solutions" to a recession, led to the beginning of the enormous government we see today.

Naomi, if you want to invest in alternative energy, then form a coalitions of people and start a company. The only reason you want tax-payers to subsidize alternative energy is because you're unsure of its effectiveness (notice how libs always ask tax-payer to subsidize untested methods, yet won't do it themselves).
Alt. energy is incredibly unreliable. Ethanol doesn't release anywhere near as much energy as octane. Saturated hydrocarbons are the most efficient form of energy extraction now

Well, Obama did suspend all construction projects on future oil rigs. He just did a big favor for big oil. Now, they have essentially a fixed supply, which keeps prices up. Normally, they would build more rigs, increase supply and then prices would fall, assuming government would not tax it. And now, the government tax on oil, which oil prices is high, helps the federal government. For the love of god, exploit every opportunity for energy in-dependency!

You don't need the government to go into new ventures, If it was economically more efficient to use solar and wind, then more investments will go there. People still use oil because oil is cheaper. Only reason Nuclear isn't used is because government is extremely restrictive of it.

The Republicans always seem to be able to cut taxes for the wealthy though and talk a lot about cutting spending. Reality is they spend far more than the Democrats. The framing of an issue doesn't change the facts unless you like to buy the lie, or benefit from them.

Meanwhile, tens of thousands of people die each year outright from air pollution. They pay the highest price: and it's not just "old people who are going to die anyway". Many billions in lost work and school hours, doctor and hospital visits, medications.
The price we are paying for the convenience of burning oil and gas jacks up the price of health care, accelerates damage from everything from buildings to crops.

Obama isn't anything let-a-lone a fake. You've to be something in order to fake it. I do not believe that he's equipped with the philosophical principles to deal with this crisis. He was voted in to get and give health care along with many other socialist mechanisms. Even his constituents haven't forgotten this. 2. If you have ever read or heard many of Naomi Kline's ideas you would know that most are not in line with the free market theories of Milton Friedman. She is on the show to push her book (in a pretty free capitalistic system too).

Who cares if she's pushing her book? That's a catch-22, you can't push your book or all you care about is $, what kind of point is that? I've seen what kind of market theories friedman has proposed...taking advantage of disasters and fear to instill your economic model, or worse creating them. the coup in Chile for example and the other two examples she gives in The Shock Doctrine. Do you just ignore all these facts?

@Taobert The "facts" in Klines's book as you call them have been called (by many prominent economists ) factual distortion and bad scholarship.
In regards to Chile, It is argued that economic freedom brought about democracy. Kline is lacking in comprehension of the moral nature of political power and how IT is the source of systemic social corruption.
Friedman is by no means always correct, but his theories are held in much higher regard than anything Kline has put forth.

@honest1963 Its true, Chile is one of the countries that became a success after the Chicago Boys got to them, but at what cost. There was a democratically elected government in Chile at the time, and Pinochet was closer to a fascist dictator after taking power. Chile was nothing but a casualty of cold war anti-communism efforts supported by the US. By no means is Chile the norm when it comes to the shock therapy given by Sachs, Friedman and the Chicago boys. Look at Bolivia.

OK, so we agree that speculators drove up the cost of oil because they thought it would continue to climb. This legislation they are talking about was passed, there for speculators believed more oil would come into the market and prices would decrease, and the prices did indeed decrease after the leg was passed. What's my pint? i dunno, but instead of coming up with real solutions, Ms. Klein wants us to rely on farts and sunshine to solve an economic problem created by restrictions.
