There are ways to make one's voice know; protesting, disorderly conduct, and blocking traffic are not them.
Campus security they are not. DPS at GU are Campus Police Officers. Their duties are to protect not only the people of the university, but its assets as well. If the director of the campus tells them to remove a protestor, they have no choice but to do it.
Simply obey the police. Demonstrate if you wish, but don't block traffic or walkways and we - police - will leave ou alon
problem - they could have warned several times using ASL *first* before doing this to so many people. another problem - how did they choose who to do it to? see, those were possible lawsuits there because it was probably based on who was not listening, noisy, sitting in the wrong place, or just anyone they didn't like. there was no monitoring against discrimination and these people weren't trained, so what happened to DPS?
@jpcwa74 right. terrible. did these people get sued? this will probably affected several Deaf people's ability to find employment in one way or another.
In someway that the Dps do not want to move the people, but I king jordan told them to do it, they dint even like it, but glad we have new person now..
I am deaf n would attend Gallaudet University this Fall 09....I dun kno what up w deaf ppl got arrest for? cux of I.Kiing Jordan (( former leader Gallaudet)) ordered police to arrest deaf??
No, it was because we had a protest in 2006 b/c Jane Fernandez was to replace King Jordan after he retired. But we believed that the vote was "set up" and that he planned for her to replace him without fairly let everyone "vote" for the candidates. He'd made the mistake of announcing her name as his replacement BEFORE voting even took place so we knew he'd set it up. The students were blocking the entrance so got arrested bc they refused to move.
I'm a freshman football player here at Gallaudet. To be honest, i've never met one person in my life that was hard of hearing or deaf. I've never fully understood the deaf community because i was never around it but now that i'm in it, i understand it more and i understand why they protested. I thought it was great that they all stuck together and fought for what they believed in. The deaf are "FAR" from being dumb and mute. Everyone should respect the deaf because they really are good people!
Why don't we sue DPS for kidnapping peaceful protestors and hold them hostage in prison or vans against their will? We know that they would assault us if we resist to being arrested. DPS are danger to society. Sue them anything you can think is appropriate.
So you spammed my inbox and you spamming this. Good job in showing the weakness in deaf culture. Which is you. All you do is rant and rave and INSULT! God bless your ignorance FOOL!
Actually...yes, they do have the right to speak freely, however they were discriminating against a hearing president during this...I do believe. Discrimination is against the law. And apparently they got a little out of hand. Crowd control is always known.
I support the deaf community, I have deaf friends and they find this Gallaudet dispute a disappointment and embarrassing.
I don't care if you have deaf friends. You are not deaf period! Well your deaf friends must be hearing minded (I am sure you know the sign for that, they may be oral deaf, or trying to be like hearing person or they have STUPID mind! You probably do). STOP oppressin deaf people! We who are TRUE Deaf find the protests very important and effective.
Well you are DEADLY WRONG! It wasn't discrimination against hearing president. How in Hell can it be discriminate against hearing president when they are the ones OPPRESSING Deaf people as always! Don't SAY SOMETHING STUPID if you don't know anything. LOOK HERE! We Deaf people have the right to have a president who is like us (obviously I King Jordan ain't real deaf, he is fake deaf! He's really hard of hearing.
They should have picked another true Deaf who was born Deaf or have knowledge of Deaf, I am glad both evil president jordan and new presdient jezebel JFK stepped down lol). I wouldn't want a white president to run at all black college, that wouldn't be right because they do not have a knowledge of black culture so it is same thing with Deaf culture. There is nothing wrong with one wanting someone from their own culture to run for president and that has nothing to do with discrimination.
Gallaudet should have funding cut as it is becoming a haven for a radicalized sub-culture rather than an open institution of higher learning. Deaf citizens deserve respect and opportunity but "deaf culture" at its lunatic fringe has become about stressing differences and separateness rather than commonality. It is time to stop indulging radical student leaders with little life experience who think it is relevant how late in life a deaf university president learned sign language.
Has the Administration read Lord of the Flies? Perhaps they should. Congress please cut their funding and shut this university down, low graduation rates, no confidence in administration, and no education going on with the exception of social protests. and I graduated gally almost 8 years ago and yes, I'm Deaf.
You may see this as a deaf rights issue, most world deaf see this as the beginning of the end for deaf advancement, also the video is not accessible to non-signing deaf, yet another continuation of the ASL users campaign to freeze us all out, gallaudet protests have brought shame, on us all. King ONLY Ordered removal/arrests after students themselves demanded to be arrested, tell the truth ! As the protest goes on, so does deaf rights get LESS.
i can stop all the officer ass i will goto white house and tell them to stop all the officer

That is so ridiculous arresting them for speaking their first amendment rights. I am proud of the students for standing up what's right! Go students!
