Growing up in the 60s my parents would repeatedly play this tune and Glen Millers American Patrol on 78rpm records on our gramophone. Wonderful memories of them dancing in the living room, ballroom style.
As kids in the late 40's we would play this terrific tune over and over . We were told that to reach the high note near the ending they had to make an extra hole in the clarionet . We were only kids , maybe the were pulling our legs . An Aussie
Carlson one of the very best ever! Forget the displays just listen to him driving the band along on some of the flagwavers. The guy was awsome. I believe he left Herman because they played too "loud"
@tullocho what a great sound & isn't that drumming fantastic.I can still remember my school friend in 1957 playing this on his drum kit to practice. All that practice was justified as he became a very good drummer, touring all over the world & backing such artists as Milt Jackson,Joe Henderson,Gary Burton,Sonny Stitt etc. Also played with Don Burrows. His name is Alan Turnbull & he lives in Sydney,Australia.Good luck,Alan.
the drummer in the photgraph looks like Don Lamond who drummed with Woody from late 1945. The drummer on the version of Golden Wedding which we hear, was Frankie Carlson. , It was recorded on Decca in 1940.
Absolutely Brilliant, I play this as often as I can.
Thanks for posting.

I love the buildup of the rolling drums at the end. It is the only drumming I can replicate in my head, it seems to have a tune of its own.

I'm 62 now and I remember playing this so many times on my parents "what ever" over 50 years ago. It was one of my favourites. Still love it today.
So much lost as old 78s were tossed out or converted to flower pots.

This could be a new routine for The City of Bundaberg Drum Corps. We are practising right now.

Brings back great memories - Gene Krupa was the best ever drummer!

For rare glimpse of Frankie Carlson, see "Woody Herman Orchestra "Doctor Jazz" 1939.

Absolutely gorgeous.. as brilliant as Sing, Sing, Sing by Benny Goodman and Gene Krupa. Thrilling and spine-tingling as Falconer said.
