we have easy and fast tecniqe" convert to black, white, and then use brush tools and make sure forground is black and then just paint of portion of image you like to change or reminde,
Fine Tutorial, but I think the 'eye'-version is better... You know, selecet the tree, make select inverse and then desaturate, but anyways fine tutorial :)
Well its good that your experimenting different ways to do stuff! The way you described may also be good for being very precise, you could have everything black and white and with the quick mask brush spell your name in color or something o.O
Don't hate discriminate :)

Gotta say:
First, tree.2jpeg lol
Second: just duplicate layer, desaturate and mask it , waaaaay simpler n faster

This might be an easier way
1. Copy the original photo, close the eye on the original
2. Make the copy black and white via Layer>New Adjustment Layer>Black & White
3. A new layer will appear called "Black and White 1", select the white square
4. Get the paintbrush tool and make sure its set to black
5. Adjust your brush settings to whatever you'd like and start painting over the image.
This will bring back the color of the photo wherever you paint
