Well, the counting is the main lesson being learned in the clip. Patrick showing up and being epic is something that maybe the creators appreciated and also to share with the adults who have to sit though this stuff and watch with their children. Including more sophosticated jokes and themes is nothing to be surprised about in a childrens tv show. It's practically commonplace.

iaapgoi - Sesame Street has always had celebrities on the show since it's inception in 1969. Part of the reason was that parents USED to spend time in front of the TV with their children rather than using it as a babysitter as they do now.

If they have these stars that the parents would know it helps to cut down on the tediem they might think comes with a children's show and the jokes help keep the parents viewing as well.

Many of the jokes in Pinky and the Brain and Animaniacs were for adults to get while the kids were entertained by the goofiness. Actually, when I was young I got all the Star Trek jokes like this because I would always watch Star Trek TNG with my older brother :)
