  • 2 reefs in the main and a smaller jib to start. Might have to drop the mail since its a small boat.

  • If that was a hobie cat, all he would need is the main, and he would be doing 20kts and flying the windward hull all day long.

  • thats nothing, sometimes a puff will round you up a bit and luff your sails, the bay is super gusty, or sometimes a newbie on the tiller will pinch up a lot... sure you can reef or just have a wild day lol

  • Boat is 'pinching'. All he needs to do is bear off a couple degrees & the sail will fill nicely. Note the boat to the left in the distance.

  • @zkenzo I was just pinching on the toilet! Then I took a shower, and now I'm going to shave!

  • Boat is doing fine----where's the problem??

  • reef

  • this boat was just fine, what the fuck are you saying? Are you able to sail?

  • Did not look like that boat was struggling to me.

  • the boat has too much canvas, is being pulled to weather with sails luffing badly-- that's what i call struggling!

  • I kinda hate to be like the sailboat guy in Jaws who said "take in yer sheet and make it fast" and got his leg bit off but my advice to anybody that gets in this situation is... "take in a reefing point and hank on that 110".

  • of if ur going to answer qeustion for mojosmadness1 message me cause it is me lol

  • o and what type of boat is that

  • i want a boat small enough that one man could handle but big enough that it has its own steering wheel and must have mast lol any 1 got a clue what boat that would be plz tell

  • singlehanding a boat is not just a matter of size and make, but how it is rigged. remember, there are sailors that race singlehanded around the world on very large boats. But generally look for a boat this is in the range of 28-34 feet long if you are a novice, and one that has a roller furling jib, at least, and one with all the control lines led back to the cockpit.

  • To much sail...reef boy reef.

  • need smaller jib to start.

  • smaller jib would definitely help, as would a reef in the main.

  • I think the main is too full. They needed to pull hard on the vang, outhaul, and cunnningham to flatten the sail. As it is, as soon as he points away enough for the main to fill with wind, it heels way over. Maybe it's an old, blown-out sail.

  • Well it's kind of hard to see, but I don't think her mains'l has any reef points?

  • I wouldn't call that struggling. Looks like normal sailing, but a bit overpowered. Sailboats tip (heel), although a reef would help, as would spilling off the main. Less heel would make for a more controlled and comfortable ride.

  • They sure are struggling because they are being repeatedly pulled to weather with sails luffing drastically which is not good for the sails or the riggling.

  • this video clip is averaging 40 hits a day. can someone please tell me why it is this popular?

is there a web site that is linking to this video?

  • Everyone loves to watch others stuggle... and You Tube "recommended" it to me.

  • I wonder why they didn't just unfurl one of the sails?

  • Looks like a boat from Cal Sailing

  • Yeah, looks about time to put a reef in. Neat video.

  • what is reefing?

  • reefing is reducing the amount of sail area to reduce the power that the wind is applying to the sails.

  • They could go faster if they reefed and kept the heel low.

  • of course, they were overpowered and needed to reef or fall off the wind
