On November 24, 2010, Sifu Ted Wong passed away. We mourn the loss of a husband, a father, an uncle, a friend and a teacher. The family thanks all those who have sent their kind condolences. We will miss him.
Rest in Peace Mr. Ted Wong. You wil be greatly missed by so people many that followed you. Your Wisdom and teachings will live on forever in all of the students you've ever trained. We will now carry the torch you kept burning for so many years in times of doubt and darkness. TWJKD!
How long did Dan wait after Bruce Lee's passing befor he opened a Jeet Kune Do school? Did'nt all of Bruce's students promiss they wouldnt open one after Bruce closed them down?
I don't want to sound negative, but people need to understand. JKD is meant to by different to the individual. What I pass to my students shouldn't look the same once they've perfected their what's simpleified to them. JKD is simplification. Original and Concept both have a place, but it's the individual that determines what his/hers looks like in the end.
I also don't like how "Concepts" guys are viewed by "Originals." Concepts guys give Originals tons of respect, but that respect is never reciprocated. They act as if Dan Inosanto doesn't exist.
I have a ton of respect for "Original" Jun Fan/JKD guys, but in my opinion they are generally a very arrogant group, extremely reactionary in their approach to martial arts and almost cult-like in their following of Bruce Lee.
Lee was amazing--probably the best martial artist of the twentiest century. But he's not God.
If people say jeet kune do is different from "this" or "that " then let the name of jeet kune do be wiped out. For that is all it is, a name. Who was it that said that?
Ted Wong is one of the last keepers of the flame. He and Jerry Poteet are two of the only ones still demonstrating what Bruce taught, unlike the Inosanto clan and the JKD "concepts" group and others who bastardized and profited off of Bruce's name.
@selinah3 .. how can you mix things that is all the same? a kick is a kick and a punch is a punch. Bruce knew that and just made it simple. like point A to point B.
JKD was bruce's path to self discovery, today its a institution a style with gospel truths. Bruce's article "Liberate yourself from Classical karate" should be retitled "Liberate yourself from Classical JKD"
I didn't realize that Ted Wong has such stupid close-minded ideas. He says that if JKD died out, he could deal with that. But he's against people combining other martial arts with it. That's the whole point of JKD, to make it your own. No 2 guys will do it the same. The core principles like intercepting and centerline must be there. But if someone does Silat or Kali or Judo or whatever in addition to it, that's all part of the growth of a martial artist and honestly expressing yourself.
I think I understand what you mean. I have seen videos were there were about 10 different techniques in one strike. I also believe that a lot of people who say they do JKD forget the principles which should never be forgotten or changed.
hey hulkout666, I see you're from Canada, so what if you made pro hockey have teams of ten players, and play it with a ball, and raised the goal to 10 feet. then you had to play it on skateboards.
It's still hockey but we just keep adding to it. that's ok right?
awesome guy.. he is very much like bruce i feel in the way he acts.. very sincere and fair.. i would love to learn the actual art of jeet kune do instead of a concept
If you look at :59 you will see Ted Wongs certificate give by SiJo Lee and to prove it look at the bottem right corner. That is Bruce Lee's personal Stamp only given by Lee not already printed on. No it had to be stamped on, and the only one to do that was SiJo Bruce Lee.
All I Have to say to any body on the comment made by JKDLifer, Yes Ted wong Did not get past the 3rd rank because Lee died, But Ted Was Lees Protasha. And Dan Inosonto was only a third rank, there where many of SiJo Lee's students that are higher like Jessie Glover, Jerry Poteet, and Katy Kimura. Ted is one of many JKD teachers from Lee and We as Students Need to quit polaticing and pointing saying he's better or he's more then this one. SHUT UP! Let's Keep SiJo Bruce Lee's Dream of making JKD.
Yo, has anyone seen any trapping in boxing or fencing? Efficiency is the key. No time to trap. Hit fast, hit hard. Correct body alignment & use of leverage. All comes from the stance & footwork. Footwork and stance makes it all possible. Keep it real,yo. Peace!
I don't understand why he's talking about bringing back his (Bruce's) original art? I think that's not right either. Instead of looking 35 years into the past, why not look ahead to the next 35 years? What we need to do as a JKD family is work together to advance JKD into the future so that our children won't forget Bruce but in his memory evolve his original idea. After all that's what he was doing in the short time he was here wasn't it?
OK see if you understand this. Ted is HONORING Bruce's art by relaying what Bruce taught him. as non diluted as possible, from Bruce, to Ted, to Teds students. without adding his own opinion or bias.not trying to make a profit or bastardizing Bruce's name. its that simple. Ted teaches JKD as Bruce taught it to him. its not bringing back. he's preserving Bruce Lee art. like a historian.
JKD is an ever evolving martial art. It must not be set in stone. It is a concept. If it wasn't added to then it would become trapped in tradition, which is not the point of JKD. Be free. Respect to Ted for honoring Bruce.your comment about not making profit?watch the clip again.Bruce lee's legacy is his name, after 35 years since his death he is still actively advertising, bringing lost kids to a productive physical and mental martial art, amazing man!
It was my understanding that Bruce did not teach any two people quite the same, as no two people have the same attributes. No one is Bruce Lee. His concept that each student explore themself is what matters.
Apmhflick: You haven't seen it because he barely does it. Why? By the time Ted was learning JKD from Bruce, trapping was not a part of Bruce's approach to fighting. Of course, there is the odd trap in a clinch situation, but trapping per se is "JKD Concepts", or Jun Fan Gung Fu. ...NOT JKD.
Ted learned Jeet Kune Do and teaches Jeet Kune Do.
Are you sure? I'm not challenging your knowledge or anything, but Jerry Poteet and other "Original JKD" sifus teach trapping. Trapping is in Bruce's writings. I think it is always considered as a scondary thing-if you can hit, hit. But it's still important. Maybe like you said, it just wasn't a huge part of Bruce's repertoir yet when Ted first started learning, but he stayed with Bruce until his death. I dunno.
Apmhflick: What you say is right. What we have to consider (and what 99% of people are somehow missing here) is the TIMELINE involved with all of this. Those guys do indeed teach trapping, because during their respective times in relating to Bruce's life, that is what Bruce was teaching (for instance, back in the Gung Fu days you got trapping and stuff). When Ted came along, most of that was out the window, and Jeet Kune Do was actually born, so Ted learned the bare trapping essentials.
The only Original JKD Sifu I know of is Sifu Wong. Jerry Poteet teaches Jun Fan Gung Fu. "Jeet Kune Do" was ultimately in its infancy at the end of the "Chinatown" era and as such was still principally Jun Fan Gung Fu-based.
Personally, I find the term "Original JKD" misleading, but hey.. I didn't coin it.
Once Bruce dropped the "styles" and started taking physics, that's when JKD started happening.
Trapping was not eliminated from Jeet Kune Do, Bruce just rarely had to use it because he was so fast that people could barely see his strikes, let alone block or stop them. But Bruce Lee did not rule it out of his late teachings, just realized that it wasn't as important as the other aspects of Jeet Kune Do.
Brawl118: Yes... you've essentially got it there. But also note that the trapping that Bruce was teaching was incredibly simplified (ie. Jut Sao to Straight Lead or rear hand Jao Sao to front Hook). There was none of this elaborate trapping that you saw in Bruce's Jun Fan Gung Fu teachings. That was an earlier time and an earlier era.
$20 a month...damn! those gys were so lucky and they were trained by bruce lee himself. I have to pay £80 a month for 8 lessons...thats almost $160 a month.
I'm not going to get into a Nucleus/Concepts pissing match with you, and I could give a shit what Ted Wong says in the video. Bruce Lee never wanted a fixed system with a bunch of brainwashed cronies, and he'd be proud of his good friend Dan Inosanto if he was alive today. Paul Vunak is doing what works for him, based on his exposure to JKD, including Jun Fan Gung Fu and other arts. It conforms to JKD principles and the Navy SEALs wouldn't use it if it didn't work. That's all that matters.
Paul Vunak doesn't practice or teach original JKD,you can't seriously believe that he does,he makes up his own stuff, why does he have to use Bruce Lee's name? Ted wong even states in this interview that this sort of thing burns him up,this is coming from a first generation student who is part of the Bruce Lee Foundation! Are you a JKD student?
In my experience the students with the biggest mouths are the most insecure and have the most to prove. Dan Inosanto is an incredible human being, and his contributions to JKD speak for themselves. Why people like you have a pathological need to discredit him and his students I cannot say, but you guys look foolish when you claim that Paul Vunak, Erik Paulson, Francis Fong, Rick Young, or Rick Faye aren't practicing JKD. Apparently Paul Vunak was good enough for the Navy SEALs. What a pussy.
What Paul Vunak calls Jeet Kune Do is nothing like this, not even close! He robbed the name of Bruces art, turned it into something it isn't even close to,then sells off the right to teach it to others! How can this be viewed as a positive act in Bruce Lee's name, have you seen some of his instructors, that goon John Lopez is one of his boys,he's the ultimate insult to JKD! Who would you rather have teach you,Paul Vunak or Ted Wong?
The one thing that should be the same since 1973 is the fact that JKD should be small in numbers and high in quality. I have to admit its small compared to other arts but so many people dont teach it correctly and they misuse it. Paul Vunak told a story about when one of his student came an instructer and how his student wasnt teaching it right and was doing all this weird stuff. I think that if Bruce Lee was alive now he would shut down all JKD schools and only let certain people teach it.
concept is a moment, a tool.(noun, a general notion or idea; conception.) now "Art", art is something you live, share, pass on and it grows. Jeet Kune Do is not a concept, it's a martial art.
JKD is not a martial art my friend. I think I know what you're trying to say but is nothing more than a name. I agree that it is a way of life which in turn you can make it your own art.
What a heartfelt interveiw by a true gentleman,I was fortunate enough to attend a seminar he did at a basement in Glasgow,it was a real pleasure to be in this mans company and to receive his instruction! A real big thanks for posting this video!
I had the pleasure of attending a private seminar that Sifu Wong conducted. It was an honor to be instructed by him, to have him answer our questions and to have spent time with Sigung's last student. Watching his movements, Sifu Wong does truly move like Bruce Lee. I'm grateful that Sifu Wong continues to teach what Sigung taught him - remaining true to the original art of Jeet Kune Do.
Ted your a good man, I attended seminars you conducted in Glasgow back in the mid to late nineties you praised me on more than one occasion. Hopefully one day we might meet again, all the best Pete.
You didn't pay attention or just don't know...but, it said is TWO LIVING that Bruce made instructors in JEET KUNE DO...which are Dan Inosanto and Ted Wong..both recieved instructorship to teach JKD from Bruce Lee. Taky Kimura only has instructorship to teach Bruce's Jun Fan Gung Fu (not JKD) Jerry Poteet was never given ANY instructorship by Bruce...he was given it YEARS AFTER Bruce died by I believe, Dan Inosanto. Got it now? Ciao
I believe Mr.Dan Inosanto teaches the "concept" of Jeet Kune do and many other Martial Arts but specialized in mainly Filipino Martial Arts by choice. Mr. Ted Wong teaches Jun Fan Jeet Kune Do(Bruce Lee's JKD) as he learned from Mr. Bruce Lee.I studied with both of these gentlemen.I got it.
I've studied with Sifu/Guro/Sensei Inosanto s well...for years..MANY times. He has instructor certification (Diploma/Certificates) from Sigung Lee in, 1)'Bruce Lee's Tao of Gung Fu', 2)'Jun Fan Gung Fu' and 3)'Jeet Kune Do' and is the ONLY person who ever had instructor certification in all THREE given directly from Bruce Lee. Yes, he teaches Filipino arts a lot...but that is his base. He also teaches Junfan and JKD , Muay Thai etc..etc..etc. Just FYI. Good luck.
the way i see it if you want to learn bruce's art then go the original route. since you had both teachings then you are aware they are diffrent in technique and tactics so basically we are talking of two diffrent martial arts one has nothing to do with the other
I respect Mr. Wong, however most people don't realize where he received his instructorship in JKD... Dan Inosanto. He was never given an instructorship from Bruce himself. Only Dan Inosanto.
The same person he's indirectly trashing in this video.
I hate this division we have. It's all the same if we really pay attention.
No, I do believe Ted Wong has a JKD certificate which Bruce authorized/signed/gave to Ted Wong. yes, dan is the only one who has ALL three different certificates Bruce presented (Tao of Gung Fu)..(Junfan Gung Fu)..(Jeet Kune Do)...but I am pretty certain Bruce gave one to Ted for JKD. Taky Kimura being the only other to have teaching cetrt from Bruce(living that is..because I believe James Lee had a cert to teach from Bruce but sadly died young soon after his wife passed).
He does have a certificate from Bruce seen in this video. Look closely though. It is for a 2nd rank. Not a 3rd rank as required by Bruce in order to teach JKD. There is only one person given the rank of instructor in JKD by Bruce and that's Dan Inosanto.
I really didn't intend on fussing over it, but I do feel that the facts should be presented correctly.
Regardless of it all I do respect Mr. Wong a great deal. Watching him move for me resembles watching Sijo Lee.
Fantastic video, so touching to hear Ted talk about his timing with Bruce Lee. Even more amazing to see Ted in action. Bruce Lee said that when he was old there would be no old guy pushing him around, looks like Ted is a living example!

Who would you rather have teach you,Paul Vunak or Ted Wong?

Oh yeah, you're a tough guy. Go try to kick Paul Vunak's ass you jerk-off.
MoodyGroove 3 years ago
Paul Vunak is one of those who've really done their bit to fuck Jeet Kune Do up,did you see Ted Wong pull of any of the moves that cretin performs?
fourlegs44 3 years ago
The one thing that should be the same since 1973 is the fact that JKD should be small in numbers and high in quality. I have to admit its small compared to other arts but so many people dont teach it correctly and they misuse it. Paul Vunak told a story about when one of his student came an instructer and how his student wasnt teaching it right and was doing all this weird stuff. I think that if Bruce Lee was alive now he would shut down all JKD schools and only let certain people teach it.

I'm a grandstudent of Ted Wong. However,i don't understand why he denied Jeet Kune Do is a concept? Can anyone please enlighten me?
1990ShawnMicheals 3 years ago
concept is a moment, a tool.(noun, a general notion or idea; conception.) now "Art", art is something you live, share, pass on and it grows. Jeet Kune Do is not a concept, it's a martial art.

JKD is not a martial art my friend. I think I know what you're trying to say but is nothing more than a name. I agree that it is a way of life which in turn you can make it your own art.
Remember not to fuss over it.

And of course, you know better than Ted Wong, right?

Nice try bud, but I wasn't talking to Mr. Wong or you for that matter.
Thanks for the chuckles though....

Sorry. I thought you were talking to Mr. Wong.

1 of 2 living instructors? i count 4. poteet, inosanto, kimura and ted.
frootjooce 3 years ago

Bruce Lee.I studied with both of these gentlemen.I got it.
gohan4585 3 years ago
Just FYI. Good luck.

the way i see it if you want to learn bruce's art then go the original route. since you had both teachings then you are aware they are diffrent in technique and tactics so basically we are talking of two diffrent martial arts one has nothing to do with the other
mazilin2 3 years ago
I respect Mr. Wong, however most people don't realize where he received his instructorship in JKD... Dan Inosanto. He was never given an instructorship from Bruce himself. Only Dan Inosanto.
The same person he's indirectly trashing in this video.
I hate this division we have. It's all the same if we really pay attention.
JKDLIFER 3 years ago
No, I do believe Ted Wong has a JKD certificate which Bruce authorized/signed/gave to Ted Wong. yes, dan is the only one who has ALL three different certificates Bruce presented (Tao of Gung Fu)..(Junfan Gung Fu)..(Jeet Kune Do)...but I am pretty certain Bruce gave one to Ted for JKD. Taky Kimura being the only other to have teaching cetrt from Bruce(living that is..because I believe James Lee had a cert to teach from Bruce but sadly died young soon after his wife passed).
KeVox7 3 years ago
