  • Does the pump send gas to the injectors every rotation. It seams that it would have to skip a cycle because of the 4 stroke the motor has.

My mercedes turbo diesel smokes a lot like the injection pump is sending has to the injectors on the exhaust and the intake stroke.

Do you know how the pumps work?

  • @idusclothing It sends diesel to the cylinder only in the compression stroke. The injection pump has a camshaft of its own, driven by the engine timing chain. A smoking diesel can be a lot of things, but never an injection pump pumping diesel in the exhaust stroke. Go to an online forum like Benzworld for more information and answers why your diesel smokes.

  • ok, im going to give it a try tomorrow when i start my car. I just installed a new head gasket and i think my timing might be a little off.

  • so when it comes to timing for the motor...

you need the cam, crank, and the fuel all aligned?

  • The crank, cam and diesel pump are connected to each other by the timing chain. You can adjust injection timing of the diesel pump a bit and with this test you can check if the pump is at injection point. So yes, all need to be aligned according to specs, otherwise the engine will not run or be smokey/inefficient with fuel.
