Jafro- Thanks for taking the time and posting such great videos. I've watched this at least a half dozen times, and some of the silly stuff is hilarious. My Talon has been sitting in the garage for three years now, but after watching these videos (and finally having some extra cash), I think I'm ready to pull the motor and try to fix it myself (I have a spun bearing). Keep up the good work!
@slimshadie1290 Thrust clearance is .007". This one went more than twice that. That contributed to me kicking my accessory belts off repeatedly during the last 3 months of its life. I was questioning whether or not a new set of bearings could correct it because the mains weren't worn otherwise. Aside from the thrust bearing, the other mains were in-spec. It moved enough to exceed the rod gap, and at 8000 RPMs... that's not good. I may have an oil pump failure as well. Dunno if b4 or after.
I know I am late, but I love the Fresh Prince remix. Don't know what rainy day you started writting that one on but it turned out pretty nice. When we tore down my buddies 7 bolt his rod bearings looked the same and he had a ton of endplay. Happy building and I know that you will keep us posted.
@robertbaxley You're not late, you commented right when you were supposed to!
I swear to you I didn't even get the idea to do that until I was sitting on the upload screen with my 2.3GB file. I had 45 minutes to kill and an empty description field. I sat there for about 15 minutes wondering how to comment on probably the most controversial subject about DSMs without starting a flame war. I had it completed prior to the upload finishing. No lie.
@Jafromobile That was a very good and effective alternative. Instead of a pissing contest I got to read comments and a discription with some never before seen humor. Great job and 45 min is an accoplishment in itself. Look forward to the colt videos and I have to catch up on the CAPS one too. very good vid. a good bit of tinkering there to get the crank and rods out. was the engine starved of oil. that caused the shells to turn in the cap> or over revving.??
Am I the only one that opened a new tab and played the Benny Hill theme to this video. :p
That engine looks so nice, shame it had to go like that. :( Oh well shit happens. Looking forward to the 6 bolt swap coming up. :)
Also, is there a downside to using a 2.4 block when building an engine aside from having to do some math and part number finding for the right height of everything? My 95 Talon has over 140k and won't last forever so I'm just trying to plan ahead. (I also <3 more torque) lol
@sharky322 Nah, the holidays seem to have disrupted everyone's schedules, including mine. It's not even cleaned up for powder coating yet. In the meantime I have collected over 9 hours of video of Colt fabrication work, still have plenty more to go for a finished product... but I'm still working hard making more videos while we're waiting.
I dont get it...you put the nicest parts, fabrcation, and nicest work on ths car and it walked?! always keep up on maintence n mine but hopefully mine doesnt walk....
@jafromobile thanks for the detailed information. very useful. im leaning towards the oil jets vs oil squiters as i read much about the difference between the jdm evo blocks and usdm blocks (7bolt) is indeed a factor towards CW. however like you stated, any block can walk and there are many contributing factors to it not only limited on its design or bearing or material that the bearing/block is casted from. so hows the build coming up? good luck with it by the way and happy new year.
@paopao814 It may be, but it waited until my block was 168,000 miles old to cause a problem if it was ever a factor.
All of my 6-bolt stuff is on hold for a payday. It all requires money. I've been in the garage for 2 days shooting new Colt material because I felt like welding this holiday and have everything I need. Plenty of fabrication work ahead of me but I'm making great progress.
@jafromobile very informative thankyou. just to clarify tho, the sirius 2 4g63 didnt come up until the evo 4 correct? my frend has the an evo 2 which still has the same 4g63 that the 2g have. (just incase u missed a couple of my early post prior to the one that youve replied to)
@paopao814 Oh! Yes, Sirius II are the backwards ones that followed the Evo III.
The EVO VIII is the one that made Tommy Makinen quit and defect to Subaru in WRC. Broke it on turn 3 of its first race. Not a very patient guy, but a hell of a driver. It's a shame nobody in the states can easily get their hands on a used I-VII. I appreciate the Galant guys for keeping the "prE-VO"'s running.
is the JDM 7bolt beefier than USDM ones? i havent heard of an early evo crankwalked as much as USDM 2gs also i havent seen or heard any 7 bolts here in the US that actually held up and took a beating for as long as 6 years like my frends evo.. searched the net about whats what but then again "they" tend to say its the same block but i have doubts.
@paopao814 The drivetrain in an EVO is so different that I'm pretty sure it reduces the chances of walking. The EVO with the Sirius II engine is oriented backwards from the earlier 4g63's. The timing belt is on the other side of the car, so there's no counterbalance shaft in the transmission to correct the rotation of the engine vs. wheels. The clutch is different with an un-stepped flywheel. Even the hydraulics that actuate them are different. I believe the clutch is a BIG factor in it.
he then got back to me saying he checked his crank and it is a 7bolt just like a 2g has. however his car has been a 9 second car for the past 6 years and has been raced since. which leads me to a question, whats the diffrence between a USDM 7bolt and a JDM 7 bolt?
@paopao814 There's a great thread about this on 'tuners. It's thread #418826. I had to check one of my "facts" about the oil jets myself. Someone had to remove them from their EVO block to make room for their stroker crank, and that would be the only difference I can tell between the two. At least as crankwalk contributing factors are concerned.
@jafromobile hello there its me again. i spoke to a frend of mine back in the philipines who now owns a modded evo 2 that runs low 9s. i asked him about "crankwalk" and the guy was clueless to what it is so i explained and later on he did some reaserch on the net about it and got back to me. he was telling me it scared the shit out of him at first then began checking his thrust play however the results wer fine.
@paopao814 The Evo II is like Mike Reichen's standing mile record holder. It does indeed have a 7-bolt as most all of the evo's began production after '92. There is only one difference between the Evo and the 2g designs aside from pistons. The EVO uses oil squirters instead of oil jets like the 2g does.
Some believe that the oil jets are contributors to oiling problems if they get clogged and stuck open. I think that's dubious because a clog is a restriction. Perhaps in some cases it's not.
@DSMF0RLIFE Yes, that's correct. Truly, any engine can crankwalk. There are lots of people posting videos of 6-bolts that walked by more than .070". This really leads me to believe that clutch problems are a greater contributor to this overall.
It appears I also have a problem with my front case, though I can't tell right now if it's a symptom or a cause at this point. Spun bearings aren't necessarily caused by crankwalk. Certainly not at .014". It's usually an oiling problem for that.
@DSMF0RLIFE All of the 2g 7-bolts have the same thrust bearing as far as I know. At least based on the replacement part numbers anyway. They're 2 180° bearings that saddle the mains. It's the 2000+ 4gxx's from the Sirius II platform (think EVO VIII, IX) that have the 3-piece design with separate thrust washers. Oddly, the 2g style thrust bearing still fits those cranks. 'covered that one in the "Why so SIRIUS" video a couple o' months ago.
@jawar123 Ah! Clearly my service manual is an early '97 print because it shows the same bearings I have in the drawing. But something that's always baffled me is the dot & stamping info never reflected any of the markings on my bearings or block. Maybe that's why? We'd better tell DSMF0RLIFE.
Jafro, can you explain why the "crankwalk" bolt is so important? And, I can't see clearly the connection between the "crankwalk" bolt and the bearings flipping... can you explain on this?
Thanks again for sharing this valuable knowledge with us DSM noobies!
@jawar123 Indeed, I will. The spun bearings between the flywheel and the thrust bearing are a result of vibrations caused by a misaligned transmission. That bolt missing allowed drivetrain vibration and recoil to transfer to the flywheel like a hammer. Notice the rod bearings on the other side of the thrust bearing are fine. This block is really in the early stages of walking, the rod bearings just spun first. I've seen much worse.
I am running a 6 bolt in my 98, I Also have been running a buchur 20g at 32 psi on the stock composit gasket for 25,000 miles, and everything in the motor is upgraded. I've had no issues with it whatsoever. I personally wanted the comfort of knowing the liquids would be going where they belong.
ill be watching for updates Jafro...im currently in the process of a new engine build for the 2012 season...letse see if i can crack 800 whp :) i sent you a PM of stuff from last years motor...if you think any of it will help you out let me know bud..need to get your DSM back up n running asap.. keep up the great work as always i enjoy your tech videos
Another great video! That's the WORST part about doing something like this... I would forget what goes where! For EXAMPLE, at 6:00 you pulled off a little connector. I'd get the WHOLE thing put back together and I would have forgotten to put it back on there. But no worrys, because you'd see it all on Craiglist saying "If you can put it all back together, YOU CAN HAVE IT!!" lol. Merry Christmas and Happy New Years friend! You deserve ALL THE GOOD that comes your way! :D
Jafro thanks for making these videos it helps me so much when I'm working on my Dsm It's like a video dictionary lol btw love the fresh prince remix made my day. Merry Christmas!
@2stroketurbo The knob in my boost controller has been buried so long... haven't touched it in 40,000 miles. No problemo! Just a flat deck, ARP's and an OE composite. Not bad... Not bad... I know other people doing it!
I'll cover the failure in much more detail later. I wanted to produce another video in my old format for a holiday gift. :)
That is some impressive DnB on the kit!!. Sorry to hear the GSX is down. I still have that 6 bolt that we rapped out of the 1G (you got the wheel wells out of it for the colt). Makes we want to drop that 6bolt in mine now and give the gas face to the 7bolt! Awesome vids as usual sir!
yoyo Jafro.. Nice haircut bro. sorry to hear you c walked but now its time to join me on the 6 bolt side!!!! And did you have a stock flywheel? looked like it from the video
@YungJuiceman23 I'm joining the 6-bolt dark side alright! And yep... stock flywheel. Nothing removed from it. I like the inertia because it helps me get the car moving more consistently at the track.
When is the mirage going to make an appearance? Also, watching your videos is very insightful. Love to see what your going to do next. I am very curious on how your going to wire that 4G63 in the Mirage-a-twa. That is the only part that is stopping me from doing my project. Can't wait for you to explain how to wire it up. Merry Christmas!!
@Corey3851 You noticed the GSX and Colt traded spaces? That wasn't easy, lemmie tell ya. The Colt's toed in, HARD. Like 10° between both wheels. She don't like to roll. I'll have that fixed shortly.
Also in the works is the front crossmember, a shortened drive shaft, and a pair of Hyundai Elantra LCA's. I feel like welding this Christmas.
@2stroketurbo It's the last manifold you'll ever buy. Factory units crack over time. They just do. Some faster than others. The FP Race manifold has big enough runners not to require porting, and made from a thick alloy that's unlikely to give in to the heat a DSM can produce. The factory manifold is plain old cast iron. I took mine a step further and shipped it off to Jet-Hot for ceramic coating. I didn't want to heat wrap it and the factory heat shields don't fit.
@Jafromobile ...I noticed you ceramic coated yours. I've never had the stock ones crack, even wrapped.... but I'm tired of porting to make good flow. FP makes good stuff, and I have no doubt that beauty flows real good. I'm gonna get one for my 6 bolt Subaru 360.
@jafromobile I realy do admire your skills and tech knowhow. You make everything seem so simple and easy yet its not so much for me with very little knowledge.. Thank you for your comment it makes total sense.. il be following your 6bolt build too your the only one who really takes time to document and share with excellent detail. Mybe il be looking for extra blocks in the junk yards. any tips would be highly appreciated. i know there are alot of articles about it but i'd rather hear it from you
Hey jafro, sorry to hear about your car man! My car also has the stock 7 bolt in it, but I have a 6 bolt sitting around I might build up. Is there any way I could contact you to ask you some basic noob dsm questions? Do you use aim or yahoo? I'd appreciate it man, just looking to learn as much as I can. I frequent dsmtuners every day, but even then, I get pretty confused about a lot of stuff! Anyway, good luck with your car bro, I wish you all the best!
@bradikus7 First of all, thank you sir. Comments like yours do take away some, if not most of the ugly feeling towards CW. You do have a point here tho. However i woudnt like to asume im safe from cw, actually i am only expecting the worse. my car is a 95 gst, daily driven since (its my only car and i do like going up hill and down hill climbs every once in a while) and has 130kmiles on it right now and is all stock aside from an intake and a typ s bov.
man this is what gives me nightmares at times, literally. for a 7 bolt owner this would probably what hunts us. im not going to deny, it scares the hell outta me. ive read tons of articles of cw all over the internet however ive never seen it first hand so it gave me a peace of mind until i watched this vid :( ive been following your videos for referals of diy's and for the most part because you own, drive and race a 7 bolt.. On the contrary, i dont race my car but i do mountain passes for fun.
@paopao814 You have to keep in mind that this was on a motor that probably had a good amount of mileage in the first place, it was then obviously rebuilt with forged internals and still lasted 48k miles with tons of launches, track passes, drag races etc. Jafro still blames this failure on an error from the previous owner. I'm not trying to answer for him but I'm just saying, CW is way too over rated and tossed around. Can it happen? Of course it can but to any motor, not just 7bolt 4G63's. :)
@bradikus7 I just want to clarify that the problem may have started with a previous owner, but it's never been anyone else's fault but mine for allowing it to continue. I would never in a million years blame someone else for something without finding my part in it. I had the responsibility to make it right, and despite numerous costly transmission failures that were trying to tell me something, I still missed it. Fortunately, I caught it and it's covered correctly in my transmission series.
@paopao814 128,000 miles prior to the rebuild. Had broken 2 transmissions in under 15,000 miles of ownership. I beat and flogged this car for a decade.
If you follow the factory service manual to the letter and don't leave anything out when repairing and maintaining things, a 7-bolt can indeed last you a lifetime. When you build it to produce more than double or more than what the factory tuned it for, expect it not to live quite as long. The odometer has 169,000 miles right now.
Another awesome classic this one is going into my favorite collection thumbs up two keep it up can't wait till its done again.merry christmas to you and your family and a happy new year.
@CHIBA280CRV That's a loaded question. I can't fix the crank or the rods. The block will be changed to a 6-bolt which... yes, that WILL fix it. But the crank & rods are toast, and not worth even attempting a repair with. Because of how this car is used, installing the stronger 6-bolt shortblock is the best possible fix.
@Jafromobile That is what i was wondering! and thank you for all your great videos this year, wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!! God Bless you all..peace"
This sucks!! I've always heard if you take care of all your maintenance, crank walk would most likely never happen... and I know you did everyhting to prevent it, yet it still happened?? That's kinda disheartening for a 7-bolt owner like me! :/ yikes!
@volkerdrum Don't let it scare you. This was actually completely my fault. My transmission/clutch overhaul series was created by correcting a mistake. One that was made before I bought the car. It never had the "hidden" or "crankwalk" bolt as I like to call it installed on the back of the transmission. As a result, every time the clutch was serviced, the bolts were tight, but over time came loose. That bolt I covered in the transmission installation video is REALLY IMPORTANT.
One great video!
Jafro, can you explain why the "crankwalk" bolt is so important? And, I can't see clearly the connection between the "crankwalk" bolt and the bearings flipping... can you explain on this?
Thanks again for sharing this valuable knowledge with us DSM noobies!
jawar123 2 months ago
@jawar123 Indeed, I will. The spun bearings between the flywheel and the thrust bearing are a result of vibrations caused by a misaligned transmission. That bolt missing allowed drivetrain vibration and recoil to transfer to the flywheel like a hammer. Notice the rod bearings on the other side of the thrust bearing are fine. This block is really in the early stages of walking, the rod bearings just spun first. I've seen much worse.
I'll cover it more in-depth in another video.

I'm shocked the stock composite Head Gasket held up that long under 29 psi. I find it also odd just the flywheel end bearings went
2stroketurbo 2 months ago

YungJuiceman23 2 months ago
@YungJuiceman23 I'm joining the 6-bolt dark side alright! And yep... stock flywheel. Nothing removed from it. I like the inertia because it helps me get the car moving more consistently at the track.

When is the mirage going to make an appearance? Also, watching your videos is very insightful. Love to see what your going to do next. I am very curious on how your going to wire that 4G63 in the Mirage-a-twa. That is the only part that is stopping me from doing my project. Can't wait for you to explain how to wire it up. Merry Christmas!!
Corey3851 2 months ago
@Corey3851 You noticed the GSX and Colt traded spaces? That wasn't easy, lemmie tell ya. The Colt's toed in, HARD. Like 10° between both wheels. She don't like to roll. I'll have that fixed shortly.
Also in the works is the front crossmember, a shortened drive shaft, and a pair of Hyundai Elantra LCA's. I feel like welding this Christmas.
Jafromobile 2 months ago
Sorry to see this happen. How do you like the FP cast iron exhaust manifold? I'm tempted to get one myself.
2stroketurbo 2 months ago
@2stroketurbo It's the last manifold you'll ever buy. Factory units crack over time. They just do. Some faster than others. The FP Race manifold has big enough runners not to require porting, and made from a thick alloy that's unlikely to give in to the heat a DSM can produce. The factory manifold is plain old cast iron. I took mine a step further and shipped it off to Jet-Hot for ceramic coating. I didn't want to heat wrap it and the factory heat shields don't fit.
Jafromobile 2 months ago

On the contrary, i dont race my car but i do mountain passes for fun.
paopao814 2 months ago
@paopao814 You have to keep in mind that this was on a motor that probably had a good amount of mileage in the first place, it was then obviously rebuilt with forged internals and still lasted 48k miles with tons of launches, track passes, drag races etc. Jafro still blames this failure on an error from the previous owner. I'm not trying to answer for him but I'm just saying, CW is way too over rated and tossed around. Can it happen? Of course it can but to any motor, not just 7bolt 4G63's. :)
bradikus7 2 months ago
@bradikus7 I just want to clarify that the problem may have started with a previous owner, but it's never been anyone else's fault but mine for allowing it to continue. I would never in a million years blame someone else for something without finding my part in it. I had the responsibility to make it right, and despite numerous costly transmission failures that were trying to tell me something, I still missed it. Fortunately, I caught it and it's covered correctly in my transmission series.
Jafromobile 2 months ago
@paopao814 128,000 miles prior to the rebuild. Had broken 2 transmissions in under 15,000 miles of ownership. I beat and flogged this car for a decade.
If you follow the factory service manual to the letter and don't leave anything out when repairing and maintaining things, a 7-bolt can indeed last you a lifetime. When you build it to produce more than double or more than what the factory tuned it for, expect it not to live quite as long. The odometer has 169,000 miles right now.
Jafromobile 2 months ago
@paopao814 Sorry... I had 118,000 prior to rebuild.

how many zip lock bags did you use ?

@watchforfinger 41. A 25 pack, 6 more out of another 25 pack, and 10 large freezer bags.
Jafromobile 2 months ago
jaf are you going to have ac in the colt when you are done and if yes why besides the heat ?

@watchforfinger Nope. The alternator is likely ending up where the AC compressor used to be. ;)

Crankwalk ?
are you sure ? it sounds like the 2g are notorious for that but :
I would say lack of oil leading to bearings destruction
the worst was the center one
the crankwalk is the consequence only i think.
bearings do not flip in their bore unless seizure caused by lack of lubrication
you should check your oil squirters if they are clogged up.
once clogged up the stay open and drop the oil pressure in the main gallery wich lead to poor lube of the main bearings and cause a seizure....

CAN YOU FIX IT????
CHIBA280CRV 2 months ago
@CHIBA280CRV That's a loaded question. I can't fix the crank or the rods. The block will be changed to a 6-bolt which... yes, that WILL fix it. But the crank & rods are toast, and not worth even attempting a repair with. Because of how this car is used, installing the stronger 6-bolt shortblock is the best possible fix.
I will be doing all of this work myself.
Jafromobile 2 months ago 6

This sucks!! I've always heard if you take care of all your maintenance, crank walk would most likely never happen... and I know you did everyhting to prevent it, yet it still happened?? That's kinda disheartening for a 7-bolt owner like me! :/ yikes!
volkerdrum 2 months ago
@volkerdrum Don't let it scare you. This was actually completely my fault. My transmission/clutch overhaul series was created by correcting a mistake. One that was made before I bought the car. It never had the "hidden" or "crankwalk" bolt as I like to call it installed on the back of the transmission. As a result, every time the clutch was serviced, the bolts were tight, but over time came loose. That bolt I covered in the transmission installation video is REALLY IMPORTANT.
