I woke up every morning to watch Gomer Pyle with my father, a Marine Veteran of Korea & Viet Nam wars and drill Sgt., before he would go to work. Frank Sutton's humorous and touching portrayal reminds me so much of my father's rough exterior and heart of gold. It's amazing how this show is still affecting and entertaining people decades later. Thanks to Frank , Jim Neighbors and our cousin, George Lindsey (Goober) from Andy Griffith Show occasionally. Both George & Jim are from Alabama.
Frank Sutton was terrific as Sgt. Carter. Although he was taken way too soon from this earth, I'm sure he's making the Lord laugh up in heaven. Anybody who can bring such laughter into the world the way Frank did as Sgt. Carter should have a place reserved in heaven.
Yes, Jim Nabors is still alive. He is 79 and his voice is still powerful. He sings Back Home in Indiana every year to open the Memorial Day Race. Type in Jim Nabors sings Back Home in Indiana 2010. You will see he is till very much alive unless he died since May of this year.
@lolkirby12 According to his official web site,Wikipedia, and at least 3 other sources, yes, Jim Nabors is still alive. av8tor17b needs to research a bit before offering commentary disguised as fact. By the way, Elvis makes one hell of a Whopper!
@SergeantReese I didn't realize Joe Flynn had died nearly the same time as Frank Sutton. I remember reading somewhere though that it was a drowning accident. That's kind of ironic considering he was really known for playing Capt. Binghamton on McHale's Navy.
@ridgerunner721601, just a month after Sutton. Believe it or not, it was rumored that Joe Flynn was MURDERED in his swimming pool (where he died of a heart attack).
@vividwatch47 I remember reading somewhere that he had a broken leg or his leg was in a cast or something and he was in the shallow end of the pool when he drowned. At any rate it's a shame both Joe and Frank died so young.
During the run of "Gomer Pyle", Frank Sutton went over to Viet Nam and entertained the troops, only to catch hell from others in Hollywood who were against the war. To Hell with them, Frank supported our troops. God love him.
@mikecleona Hollywood loves to blackball class acts like Frank Sutton. I know one thing I won't go to anything put out by that fat pig Michael Moore or any movies with communist scum like those Sean Penn or Danny Glover jerks starring in them. They love their communism so much. Let's see what happens when the feds who are in charge now decide they want to take every last nickel from them.
@OldMrMemories Thank you for the post. I think a lot of us feel like this, but it's obvious that Hollywood, and most of the mainstream media for that matter are both controlled by left wing extremist communist trash who want to silence those of us on the other side of the battlefield from them.
@ridgerunner721601 Your welcome friend. Be blessed and long live our Republic!. I think our quiet majority is about to awaken. Still we should have awoken some years back.
@OldMrMemories Very true. I just hope it's not too late. We should have started putting a stop to them as soon as Hollywood and the academic world started their propaganda.
@ridgerunner721601 wow, I didn't know this was going to degenerate into a political discussion. "Left wing communist trash", "mainstream media", etc. Do you have anything new to offer rather than the same usual insults bantered about as of late? Gomer Pyle was a television show, noob. It is sad that Frank Sutton died so early in his life, and I find it pathetic that people feel it is their noob duty to spout off political insults when there are other venues for this. You are a Goob, noob.
@genogeno1234 Don't give me that b.s. You libturds are constantly insulting anybody politically to the right of Mao or Stalin. The right should have started fighting back years ago. It's a struggle though when nearly all of Hollywood and all of the media other than Fox News are nothing but propaganda outlets for Ocrappo and the rest of the left wing extremists.
@ridgerunner721601 Libturd? There is a youtube video somewhere just waiting for you to comment on, and it is not this particular one, Noob. Again I say to you, it was a television show. It was cancelled prematurely. It was a situation comedy centered on the on base Marine life of one Gomer Pyle. It was not reality. Get a life, Goob.
@genogeno1234 Tell it to the Hollywood libturds who blackballed Frank Sutton for going to Vietnam and entertaining the troops. You liberals have to be the biggest hypocrites on this planet. You're always yapping about how open minded you are until somebody disagrees with you. Too bad it was Frank Sutton who died before his time instead of some piece of trash like Penn or Baldwin.
@ridgerunner721601 Are you saying Frank Sutton was blackballed by the "higher ups" in Hollywood? Because he went to Vietnam? Don't you think it had more to do with typecasting? Did you think Max Baer who played Jethro was "blackballed" by the "libturds"? How about every other person during that era who was typecasted. Was it a Libturd Conspiracy? Again, I beg of you to get a life, Noob.
this show 's reruns hav'nt been on since the iraq war due to sensitivity over making light of being a soldier. this show was a classic, now only seen here on youtube, thx.
I loved Frank Sutton in Gomer Pyle and have all seasons on DVD. My 10 year daughter loves the show. She about freaked out when I showed her a show with Gomer singing Opera so beautifully last night.
Thank you very much for this. I was always a fan of his. Sorry Gomer fans but even as a kid I did not care much for Gomer...It was Sgt.Carter that I watched
I wished that Frank Sutton's grave had a marker where he served in the US Army (not the Marines, as many thought), where he flew 14 missions in Korea. Also, maybe is should have had his home state and military rank, along with the insignias of the Army and Marine Corps. However, this simple gravestone is meaningful, for he was more than just an actor who played tough guy roles. He graduated from Columbia University in New York, and was a devoted husband and father. You left us all too soon.
From what I've read about Frank Sutton he was a highly decorated soldier who was extremely proud of his military service. It is evident that he was well-rounded. Truly, a great man.
@Jaybird1103 Frank Sutton served in the US Army infantry in World War II and made 14 assault landings in the Pacific Theater of Operations via landing craft, not aircraft. He was busy working in television during the Korean War.

Frank Sutton Was A Great ACTOR AND did alot Of Varied Roles,He Was In the 1st Season Of the Fugitive and He Was ALSO in the Movie Marty W/Ernest Bogenine
He enlisted in the United States Army during World War II, and after basic training, was sent to the South Pacific, taking part in 14 assault landings. During the run of the show, he was made an honorary sergeant by the U.S. Marine Corps in recognition of his entertainment performances at camps, hospitals and bases.

Why would one want to make a video of a photo that one may look at on the web? It would be one thing to actually go to the cemetery and shoot video of the burial site, and in the context among the other tombstones, scenery, etc. But to upload video of a widely-available still image from the Internet--I don't get it? Frankly, it's almost like watching paint dry.
One of the funniest guys that ever was on TV. He played Sgt Carter so well!
