so if karen was the "straw that stirred the carpenters drink"- and she was- you would think those closest to her would have given her the emotional support to beat her illness. you would think her brother would spearhead this effort since without her voice his music was basically elevator muzak.just a thought from someone who likes many types of pop music.
This is the actual age of the Earth -- 4.5789 billion years. Karen Carpenter really could call all occupants of interplanetary craft. She did not eat animals or dairy. The only way to receive mental telepathy from extraterrestrials.
Karen was 5/4 right, regardless of what she weighed she always appeared quite tall to me as I'm 5'3 and everyone towers over me, sorry was just an observation, good job on the song, Karen has 1 of the best voices I've ever heard.....Rip Karen
A very well made video that was not only well balaced, but well put together involving the band. this wasen't done during the best of times for Karen, or Richard- but done it was & Excellent.
How ironic that this video is filmed in a malt shop! I want to take some burgers, fries, and chocolate shakes, and cram them down Karen's throat. EAT ! EAT !EAT! My God why dont you eat?
massive carpenters fan from my 1970's childhood and obviously love pretty much anything from the 60's original sound (though I am not quite old enough to remember I was brought up on the whole sound) but have to say Dionne Bromfield does an amazing version of this among many other great 60's songs
The most famous phone numbers in music: Beachwood 4-5789; 867-5309/Jenny (Tommy Tuotone); 634-5789 (Soulsville U.S.A.) - Sam and Dave; Pennsylvania 6-5000 (Glenn Miller); 853-5937 (Squeeze); 236-6132 (Dave Carter and Tracy Grammer); 606-0842 (B-52s); 777-9311 (Morris Day and the Time); Bigelow 6-200 (Brenda Lee); Lonesome 7-7203 (Hawkshaw Hawkins);5705 (City Boy)
This is a great version of this song, I love Karen so much, I know all of her songs, and sing with her all the time, I can't wait to meet her in heaven, I feel bad for her she had this horrible desease, She is the best pop singer ever, nobody will ever top her now, or NEVER, her music is timeless and will live on forever, even people 100 years from now will still probably love her. LOVE YOU KAREN, YOU ARE MY ANGEL! :)
With all the groups reforming can you imaging how respected this woman would have been today. She could sing so easily and sound so enchanting. There are contestants on xtactor who want to be seen as the voice and I'm sure Karen would have been invited to show how natural beauty and singing can be. I do feel sad she is not here to see how good she really was. I feel I lost out on meeting an idol of pure talent.
This is a cute song, but the video really makes me feel very sad for Karen and her family. She was clearly suffering physically here, being so incredibly thin and of course, she was suffering mentally too. She's smiling here....but it really doesn't feel right or completely genuine. Karen would have been 29 or 30 here and due to her illness she looks so much older. Very sad ;( So many people miss you, Karen! RIP. xoxo
Karen Carpenter had the voice of an angel and most likely would have produced dozens more of top 10 hits had she not died so suddenly. Alot of people looked at her music as "corny" or just a short "fad" but her music has remained timeless and proves that she was indeed a top performer for her time.
For those of you born after 1970, the phone system used to be divided into areas called "exchanges." Way back before dial phones, to make a call you reached the operator, gave her the number and she would plug you into the proper exchange, tell the other operator what the number was, and that other operator would plug you into the appropriate line.
As direct dial phones came along (invented by a dentist!), the first two digits in the number were assigned to the exchange.
Thus, "BEechwood 4-5789" meant the Beechwood Exchange, Rack 4, Line 5789" and became "234-5789" if you had a dial phone.
By the 1940s, nearly all local calls were dialed directly in most phone systems, but until the 1960s, phone numbers were still assigned with the exchange name for the convenience of operators who still handled a lot of calls.
This practice died out as the Electronic Switching System came along, and a number might be miles away from the former exchange.
This is PART 3 of 3, look below for the rest of it.
When the phone number began issuing all-digit phone numbers, the only people who still gave their exchange name were those who were still in the same exchange and still had the habit.
Today, if you told someone that your number was, say "YOrktown 5-9493" the young ones -- who spend so much time texting -- wouldn't have a clue what you meant, and the older ones would look at you strangely.
LOL! I dont remember the exchange system, but my mother does. After reading up on it, I found out that, although it was supposed to be phased out many years earlier, as late as 1982 there were still rural areas using the old system...
it was so sad that of all those who have to be the reason for people to be open in public about their eating disorders, it was Karen. Everyone who loves her wishes that she's still here..and so do I. She's a phenomenon..and the love that we have for her will grow in our hearts as we continue to cherish the memories of her and their songs..
She wasn't bulimic you retard, she was anorexic. Her stomach acids didn't shrink her down like that, she never ate and then Richard caught it and he shrunk and then she DID binge/purge once and then spilled some of her stomach acids on his piano and that did shrink but that was only once, for the most part she just didn't eat.
Richard never had an eating disorder. He became addicted to Qualuudes. You're right however, Karen was (unfortunetly) Anorexic. Just too bad she had to die. She was really ready to get better.
I loved this version of her song. It was, however, painful to watch. Her looks and body ravaged by this disease. I pray for anyone with this struggle and other eating disorders!
I thought The Carpenters did nicely with this song but it was a little subtler than The Marvelettes' version. But that was The Carpenters' kind of music: clean and sweet. The Marvelettes let it all hang out and you could tell they had a blast with the song. So I consider The Carpenters' version great (+5) and The Marvelettes' version excellent (10). That's my opinion, for what it's worth.
@MOSFET2288 I wish we could have given Karen a skinnier face (in her mind). Those cheekbones beautiful cheekbones are what I think she saw as fat Love her voice. If the Carpentar's would have come around 10 years earlier they would have been more in they're element. The still are great but a litle after there time.
@mwolfhammer31 Yes, well, I think that Karen had an eating disorder which ultimately cost her life. I wish she was still around today. Her voice is timeless. She is missed, believe me. If the Carpenters came along 10 years earlier, I think they would have done well, although it's hard to say how they would have stacked up against the talent of the 1960s.
She was very unhealthy thin even from vids. of her in it from just a few years before this from late-1970's. Even in TV special from 1980 that had appearance by Ella Fitzgerald, Karen was much more thin, here. I know it was shortly after this vid. that Richard confronted her about her weight, but from looking at this vid. I'm wondering if it was too late. I do agree this is great version of song, Karen's voice still held up -- but I think some of her ability to hold her breath was in decline.
Didn't mean to post twice. Not sure if her lacking ability, in this vid., Karen used to have just few years earlier of holding her breath better through singing was part of anoerexic disorder or from her aging (even best of singer goes through that problem of being able to hold breath as long -- look at such singers who were Karen's contemporaries such as Streisand, Carly Simon & Carole King on issue). But I'm wondering for Karen whether it became more of an issue due to the disorder?
i don no who u r but u have a horrible taste in music. in this wonderful song all u could c is the singer's face and not hear her voice. she is not supposed to look as hot as she is expected to sing beautifully and most importantly ur forgetting its the 80's in which she is singing, so back then they had little fashion sense compared to the millenium.
ANOTHER GREAT SONG!! KEEP THEM COMMING THANK'S!!
