  • Got a fire in your locomotive? No problem, just get right in there and follow this simple fifteen-step procedure.

  • I keep expecting this to turn into a MST3K skit.

  • The music at around the 2 minute mark was also used in the "Adventures of Superman" 1950's TV show - usually when the "man of steel" was dealing with kryptonite.(not fire).

  • 5755 is a beautiful looking ALCO

  • fuck it!!, let it burn!!!

  • I made it to 01:24

  • Sorry boys, fire's out. You can go back to the station now.

  • SCARIER to think the last thing I shot in Tuscan (4877 at South Amboy) was taken over 30 years ago!

  • Great vid! Thanks for posting it. Brings back memories of the good old days when employees and employers cared about there work.

  • That vid was cool, our world has really changed, just the music in the background is not like anything you would hear today. Pure nostalgia.

  • Also, PRR's major passenger services, including the Northeast Corridor (NEC), were taken over by Amtrak at their startup in 1971.

  • The Pennsylvania was merged with the New York Central in the late 1960s to form Penn Central, after bankruptcy in the mid-1970s, it was merged with several others under nationalized US Federal control as 'Conrail'. After being privatized and returned to profitability in the 1980s, Conrail was subsequently divided between CSX and Norfolk Southern. The ex PRR mainline across Pennsylvania is now a Norfolk Southern mainline, while NYC's trackage across New York State is now part of CSX.

  • That's the same music that was used in the 1950's Superman shows!

  • Does anybody know if the Pennsy still offers passenger service into Atlantic City?

  • @Wa3ypx Pennsy is gone, it was absorbed into Amtrak

  • @IDF1987 WOW, guess I missed out. I was at the airport when my train pulled in!

  • @Wa3ypx Loading bags... right?

  • @paullubliner No just getting loaded

  • @IDF1987 I know you are young, but why don't you just "Google" the Pennsylvania Railroad?

  • @paullubliner Yes, and in 1968 they became the Penn Central Transportatoin Company and in 1976 that became part of Amtrak.

  • The announcer sounds like Harry Von Zell.

  • That seems dangerous how they are pushing the employees to fight fires without wearing any protective gear. I guess these were the days before OSHA! lol

  • Tom: "Dammit Jim, the engine's on fire again."

    Jim: "Again? [sigh]"

  • Whooo BH-50 "Centipede" at 15:12 alert! Nice.

  • @spiccybaby It must be the more modern equipment since the fire system is the easiest to use. Right?

  • It's funny how they describe the complicated use of the inbuilt CO2 system first, then notify about the most convenient portable extinguishers. It is assumed, perhaps, that the complicated system should be tried first, but when in doubt, "pull them all." Wouldn't more portable extinguishers work better?

  • it's funny how they're like "oh, the engine's on fire" and then the guy just walks over to the engine room so calmly...

  • Nice video, but I keep instinctively expecting a rifftrax of it like

Narrator: "The fireman had to bale in a lot of coal, to keep the old girl hot!"

Mike Nelson: "His wife's a lifelong anthracite fetishist"

  • I want the Pennsy back!!!!!

  • "Road delay, slight; physical damage: negligible; financial loss: none" Oh and personal injury none, too. Yea, there's that. Of course.

  • Was it really on fire? That would be a waste of such a beauty! :P

  • When I operate GEEP units and F units the emergency release valve during inspection is horrible. WHEN YOU TURN IT COVER YOUR EARS!!!! It is loud as the train horn!

  • If that was a hollywood movie, The locomotives would have blown up

  • Is I a in-jun-ear now?

  • The Old "Superman" series dramatic music makes this even cooler than it would be on it's own.

  • @furyiiiplate I kept waiting for George Reeves to show up and blow out the fire.

  • There only a fire on board no need to rush or anything

  • Bad acting... still better than Hugh Jackman though.

  • Yeah boys, take that water fog nozzle right up in the electrical cabinet....!!!

And lets go into an enclosed space with CO2 all over the place. Yeah right.

  • "these guys used their equipment and worked fast" lol

  • How could they tell if the Alco was on fire through all that smoke?

  • I wonder how many people died from going into a enclosed space filled with toxic smoke and spraying CO2 everywhere, because the big bosses told them to.

  • @WeldinMike27 It's quite well ventilated with full length carbody filters.

  • @paullubliner Yeah right, you go first. I'll send the fire fighters in with the SCBA to get your corpse out.

  • Comment removed

  • @paullubliner Yeah mate. #1, young: 29 in fact. #2 immature: spot on. #3: do not know a thing about car bodies or their operation.: yep just a rail fan... However... ...I do know that this video presents a very dangerous situation that quite possibly has resulted in some deaths. These days; common practice taught is to never ever enter a confined space unknown with out correct equipment. Simply because, people die in these situations. Sorry if this seems silly to you.

  • @WeldinMike27: Hey a big Thank You for stepping up like that! Remember, those old cab units were well known by their crews. When inside, due to the full length filtration grilles, roof top fans etc., they do seem rather more open than what one may suspect. Depending on the severity of the fire, one decides for one's self if it's worth fighting. The thermocouples are sensitive and the alarms go off rather early in the sequence of events.

  • @paullubliner Thanks mate. We still have these old girls running in mainline service in Australia. El Zorro have a number of them leased. They are restored to original conditon, B and S classes. As we call them.

Hope you have a great day. Kindest regards Mick

  • @WeldinMike27 Mick, do take some semaphore signal photos before they're all gone!!!!

  • @paullubliner

I still run them myself in Auran's Trainz TS12! :-)

  • well there's your problem...

  • Gee, you think the engineers were confused about the fire suppression systems? I was confused watching the video. At the end it eventually made sense. But really, it was a confusing design.

  • @bmomjian UP tells their train crews only to use the fire ext. to get out of danger, not to try and put the fire out. That's the job for the fire department.

  • i wish i could go back to that time i would not have the net but so what thing wher better than

  • "Nevermind boys, fire's out." ... I would be like, "WTF!"

  • AWESOME!!!

  • It's pretty obvious that crew safety was not a concern back then. The company can replace a locomotive. They can't replace a life. Now a days we stop and let it burn. The engine crew in the beginning of the film was exactly right to stop and get the hell off.

  • @scobrown1 I don't think I'd want to fight a fire in the engine compartment without firegear and SCBA. Seems like they would have designed a dump system that would dump all the cylinders at once into the engine room.

  • @scobrown1 Hi! I am wondering about that too. I am sure there are still Fire Safety Equipment on board just in case, but in a worst case scenario, it's better to get off the thing than stay on. I guess you have to consider just how bad is it. Is it just a little spark that made a little flame, or is it...OMG! IT'S GONNA BLOW! What rail company are you from and have you had a lot of experience with this before? Locomotives look pretty safe but I know there are things to worry about.

  • @Showgirl7able I'm an engineer for CSX. July 4th last year I burnt up a UP engine on a coal train. Call out the fire department. They came and I said let it burn. Burned up the entire engine compartment clear to the alternator. We have PK powder extinguishers on board. We only used them to exit the locomotive not to put out or fight the fire. As I stated before the company can replace an engine. They can't replace me.

  • @scobrown1

Musta been a helluva 4th! Glad you got out ok because like you said, they can replace an engine not people, (can you imagine the lawsuits?) CSX I love them. I was just at the hobby store and they have REALLY NICE MTH, Lionel and a few other CSX's available. Not affordable to me, (I get stuff used. 1957 Lionel was given to me, the Conrail loco. I bought for $55.00) But yes, I see CSX around Station Square in Pgh. Well stay safe in the big trains! We'll be praying for you! :)

  • @scobrown1 OH yes THEY CAN, but YOU can't!

  • Marasm, as about nuclear war danger!!!!!!

  • Interesting and cool video. Weird to see an ashtray on the conference table.

  • @redmus1959

Maybe they were hoping a cigarette would start a fire that they could practice putting out ;-)

  • @redmus1959 . More weird to see them not smoking while this is being filmed. There were ashtrays every where back in the day.. cause virtually every one smoked all the time.

  • Ah, Pennsylvania Railroad. Two words all railfans will never forget.

  • "The Pennsylvania Railroad Presents: Cutting Corners To Benefit Your Shareholders"

Just kidding around Pennsy commet-responder guy, please take no offense

  • Like that beautiful looking ALCO

  • now why the fuck can't they make videos like this TODAY

  • @skinnyshit8888 Lehrfilm: Staplerfahrer Klaus - Der erste Arbeitstag : Try this one . it is not very serious but quite funny. It is a work from a film projekt school.

  • Just goes to show steam engines will have their revenge one way or another

  • Great scenes of the old Pennsylvania Railroad

  • nice

  • Nice rare short from Pennsylvania Railroad! 8D

  • Hey, it's a fire. *use 100lbs CO2* Oops, we need more. *pull another station, use another 100lbs CO2* Heh, we're out again. *pull the rest of the locomotives, use 400lbs CO2* Hey! fire's out!

  • loved the old alco FA's neat find

  • Great training video!

  • its funny how the drivers like "oh the engines on fire" thumbs up if you agree

  • @legomad11 : Men acted like men back then, they did not start panicking because they knew that did not "like" help the situation. Thats why your grandfather was probably a better man than you are ........ : )

  • Splendid, the whole film is full of nostalgia, Alco engines, GG1s, staff and managers who cared enough to have films like this made, old cars, old buildings and old autos. Thank you

  • i like how calm they are about the fire in the engine. He takes his dandy time to get some co2 on the scene. Thanks for posting. Great vid.

  • @brucefetter

Don't forget this is all staged for the camera in a controlled environment. Having said that, staying calm in an emergency is the best thing to do!

  • @wdtvlive42 Unless you're Michael Scott or Dwight Schrute in that case you run like hell and cause an even more hectic situation.

A very nice video. That thought well when putting this together.

  • beautiful looking diesel units then todays crap on rails

  • Wow, awesome. Thanks a bunch for posting this!

  • great vid, guy

  • awesome just awesome
