@ArtyomLastLight This kind of music would be cool as part of the Existence 2.0 radio project for Fallout 3, in which an AI radio station robot is broadcasting ambient horror music and transcripts of his twisted robot dreams
Now we're going to try an experimental number, written using some contemporary techniques... "though we are alive, death surrounds us." On whom can we call to save to thee, o lord?
His early stuff from his first singles and albums (eg. Souls 1-4, Entroducing, etc.) had a huge atmosphere to them. True this is somewhat of a return to those days, but it's lacking the atmosphere IMO.
the thing with shadow is he'll take genres that shouldn't work and smash em together while maintaining direction and purpose and ultimatly making them work. the transitions are on point and the listen is easy. I'm just pissed i missed him at a cancelled show in san burnardino
For anyone who hasn't heard yet: the new DJ Shadow album will be called "The Less You Know the Better" and it's going to be released on September 5th. A week ago he released the I Gotta Rokk EP which is for all of us who just can't wait for the new album and includes six tracks: this song, "I've Been Trying", "I Gotta Rokk" and a remix of each track. The EP should be out in the US today (17th).
shadow has always been an experimentalist... why is this shocking that he is "going" in a new direction. I love this tune, I love his old , new, current, stuff...whatever fools...you no like you no have to listen....search for something else
Longtime Shadow fan. Honestly? I'm really liking this new direction. If his new album sounds more like this track, I'm a fan. To me, it does sound like a fusion of his classic sound with a foray into experimenting with electronica.
Sadly for me this track proves that Shadow is way behind the times in terms of electronic music. Flying lotus, Burial, Noon et al combine modern electronic styles in a much more atmospheric and interesting way.
He still hasn't quite found a new genre that he's comfortable with but it's comendable that he's trying.
I fear its time for Shadow's music to become part of the growing vinyl archive in his favourite record shop basement and to accept that he's had his day!
He will prove you wrong. There isn't an artist out there who wouldn't want to work with shadow....the artist you mention are unknown and obscure. Not only that they don't use time scales they way shadow does.
This is genius. Perfect for mixing into something with a more organic sound or to just leave it be and lounge out. I need it on vinyl.
@DjDialogic While I agree with you overall, I'd hardly call Flying Lotus and Burial "unknown and obscure" (dunno about Noon). They do make music that's on par with this. Though that is a very, very high par.
@clippertea You seriously think shadow couldn't create the shit that flylo and Diplo do? seriously? get outta here. Shadow will always do what he wants to do, hes a legend and he's earned the right to. with that said if you like shadows old shit then keep bumping that, but dont expect him to stay in the same box because it makes you happy.
dear dj shadow, keep being an awesome producer, and doing whatever the fuck you want. thanks (yes i know he will never read this, but some people might.. wink wink)
Dear, Shadow you need to turn back into the old you. This aint music. Put the pipe down. Please? Stay true to your real fans and not the pill popping, glowsticking, ear chewing robots. Thanks
@Sallystabby its original shadow but he admited thats experimental track and that probably he will record few difrent versions so maybe u listened one of them ;)
you haters can't pick and choose which Shadow album was his best. they're all awesome in their own respect. Don't hold your breath for Endtroducing 2. This is gonna be off the hook like all of his albums have been.
Leaving his production mastery aside for a minute, Shadow is still one of the deepest music makers in history (which is why certain tunes from the Outsider got a 'meh' response from me.) Absolutely delighted to see him back on the radar equipped with new inspirational music.
4:40 to 5:10 is some twisted shit. It has that apocalyptic feel to it.

@Champiness They may not be "unknown and obscure" but they certainly aren't famous.
What's more, they are very much acquired tastes (a bit like DJS)
