Last year of high school for me. 1967. My best friend and his girlfriend who we were both in love with though he never knew. Haven't seen her in 35+ years. You always remember the ones who got away. Never told anybody. Their song.
I'M 61 years old now. 1968 seems so far away. Sometimes I will go back and sit on the river bank where Annie and I would sit and watch the water slowly pass on It's way to the sea. It took a part of us with it. A long kiss would seem to stop the river and time, and for a moment we lived in the eternal present. Much too soon she, like that span of river, was gone. I've never loved that way again.
Just discovered this to have been the billboard mag. chart #1 U.S. hit, the day I was born, July 1, '68. Always dug this type of music. Bacarach (sp?), Carpenters, etc. Aside from Speed Metal & '70s Hard Rock, that is. Great Tune. Dusty Springfield's version is also great.
wow..haven't heard this song is sooooooo many years..the 60's...awe yes..grwoing up...learning life..soo confusing during those days...but..11th street..sooo many memories..
DEDICATED TO MY WIFE STEVIE!!!! I STILL SEE HER WHEN I LOOOK INTO HER EYES ...THAT BABE I PROMISE TO BE AND GROW OLD WITH HER,,,ITS BEEN 23 YEARS,,SHE THINKS I NEED SOMEONE YOUNGER,,A 19 YEAR OLD....I MARRIED A 19 YEAR OLD AND STILLL SEE HER AS I DID 23 YEARS BEFORE WHEN I LOOKE INTO HER EYES
Again thank you Otaku3 for the wonderful memories you evoke with your music uploads....I love this song... again it reminds me of my childhood. I just got tickets to see Burt Bacharach at Jupiters Casino next May and can't wait!! he's such a talent. :) oh and Merry Christmas!!
This is the kind of song I usually don't care very much for. It's a nod to an earlier generation of singers like Frank Sinatra, Andy Williams, Perry Como. They all have some good songs, but I don't really care to listen to them. But for some reason, I really like this song.
I finally got around to hear this song and this is a true definite love song of it's time and still is. I was born three years after that song was out and never golt around to hear it on the oldies station till now. Great song.
@burkerp3 Thanks for the tip. I listened to it, but I may be partial to the soulful vocals of black women, to be frank. Aretha Franklin does an interesting take on it & Ella Fitzgerald too; both are different enough not to be a straight cover. But of course credit goes to Burt Bacharach for writing it & Herb for 1st singing it. Petula has a nice voice; she's one of the few British women of significance.
I was dating a young lady when this song was on. Everytime I hear it, I have to go back to a younger, more beautiful time in my life. Music is definitely a double edge sword.
im 21 and i love this song... its just so beautiful and so well put together also the quality is excellent too... thank you for this beautiful classic
Why is this song so moving? I'll tell you: We know Herb Alpert mainly as an instrumentalist from the 60' s up until now...he's a fabulous trumpeter. But to hear his voice... so simplistic in nature and very genuine! We can relate because we've been there and this song reminds us...Remember how it was???!
I remember hearing this song for the first time at a party celebrating the end of our freshman year in high school. Guys and gals were cuddling in the parlor as I recall while this song was playing. It was mid June of 1968! I finally figured out what nostalgia is.... it is after 30 or more years when you finally realize it is time to savor either a time period or a song of your youth that you took for granted, not realizing back then, that years and years would pass by, before it is too late.
@RedditchBhoy I will be 52 in a few weeks - and this song still makes my hair stand on end. The last time I heard it was in 1977 - an old BF played it for our 'anniversary'. The memories....
I too was born in 63 and remember very fondly this song and Dione Warricks version. I also lived in the Bay Area at the time. I would love to hear Herb, Burt and others of that era. Our society needs melodious and heart felt romatic songs like this. This music brings back sooo many fond memories. I can only hope that this type of music will come back. We need it.
@Aliendear Beautiful comment <3 I feel the same, I was born in 1963 and am thankful that I was allowed to brought up with this music though I miss it so badly now.
Music, arrangement & piano by Mr. Burt Bacharach; lyrics by Mr. Hal David; vocals & trumpet by Mr. Herb Alpert! What a class act! Three musical geniuses on one song! A No.1 song from the summer of '68. It doesn't get any better than this! Thanks very much '60otaku3' for this upload. (And thanks for monitoring the comments to keep everything 'positive'!)
@wavehopper100 Yes, yes, thank you for pointing that out,wavehopper100! It is so nice to see positive comments. Wonderful job you are doing 60Otaku3, thank you for posting this beautiful song.
Absolutely right. Too often Youtube seems to be full of trolls and sad people who just want to upset everyone else. Maybe this beautiful song and beautiful rendition is the cure for these idiots. The peronal comments and memories written against this song are indeed amazing.
There's a girl I work with that I have a major crush on. I was watching her today as I worked, and this song started going through my head... the thing is, people really have told me "she thinks I'm fine..." I just don't quite have the guts to approach her.
@infamousmidnitewryte Being hesitant when you don't know if a girl you fancy is into you is understandable. That is not the case here. Go for it, man.
I was obsessed with this song as a 16 year old. Remember the old transistor radios with their old fashioned single earphone that wouldn't stay in? I used to lie on my bed and listen to every other song just waiting for this to be played again. My Dad started to kid me, as I began singing it over and over again without realizing it. Great memories....
@lapro97 I was 6 in 68 and was born at Hamilton AFB California in Marin County. Been all over the world since but have no memories of anyplace as strong as this. Hamilton no longer exists and if there is a god I will one day make it back there, listening to Herb Albert, Glen Campbell and Dionne Warwick and so many more, the entire time I am there....

was, has been, always will be one of my all time favorites... sung with such passion... I recently re-introduced this song to someone I love... he couldn't stop listening... that was then...
This is one of my mums favourite songs god bless her and what a song, and now i love it to. a This is for you mum the best mum in the world miss her soooooooooooo much
Valeu !!!
wow, what a bunch of hopeless romantics. thats a testament to this song. nothing like being in love, it surpasses anything.i am so fortunate to have found my love.

This song reminds me of my dad. He loved this song, dressed like Herb Alpert and resembled him as well. Lovely memories!
