Because this way he can press his ring finger against the fret harder, making sure right pressure is being put there.

It's the same when you put a bar with your first finger and rest the second finger (or the fuck-you finger, as you would probably call it) on it to increase the pressure. When the second finger is not needed to play any note you can use it so it contributes to the song.
