Not to sound like I'm trying to undermine your post comment because I'm sure you meant the acoustic piano as the lead instrument but I can't imagine this track WITHOUT acoustic piano. One of the funkiest tracks ever recorded, period.This stuff grabbed this 7 year old white kid's soul when it came out, showed him there was more to life than Elvis, and made my ass sit down and practice the piano. The cover of Music is my Life put me on a path to collect keyboards that won't all fit in my house.
On your website, I see you like J. Hendrix : Louis (brothers) Johnson has played with Jimi back in the old days. As a matter of fact, Louis his thumb technique on the neck (not his slapping thumb) is something Louis learned from Jimi. Jimi played also using his thumb to make chords on the neck. That's what makes both their playing styles and sound so special. Alain
@BadfingerBoogieBarb .I'm not in any position to define common for you. I said that I can't count the number of guitar players that do this and that is 100% true. All my favorite guitarists do it... Jimi, SRV, Steve Morse, Jimmy Herring, Jeff Beck, Freddie King... and how many Jimi and SRV knock-offs are out there that do it?? I do it, all my guitarist friends do it. I'm going to guess that you don't play guitar or are new to it. I think if you keep your eyes open, you'll see it's very common
I've played guitar for almost 40 years. I've never even thought about trying it; my hands aren't big enough for one thing. As I tried to point out, it's all relative. For every guitarist you can name who does it, I can name 100 who don't do it. I wouldn't classify it as rare but I wouldn't call it common either.
@BadfingerBoogieBarb ...okay, I named 6 guitarists without even thinking about it that use this technique... go ahead and start by naming 600 guitarists who don't. It's obvious, you CANNOT name 100 for every 1 that I name, it's just silly to say that. I have no idea what the numbers are, but I still say it's a very common technique. Classical guitarists obviously don't, and alot of times metal guitarists don't, but blues and jazz guitarists do it all the time. Do you play classical or metal?

I can't count the number of guitar players who use their thumbs on the neck while fretting chords... very common thing. I do it all the time.

@FyodorMDostoyevsky
Define "common"? 1 in 100 guitarists? 1 in 500? 1 in 1,000? I think most people would say it isn't particularly common.
