  • I hear a faint rod knock.

  • this engine sounds pretty healthy...id say that fuel leak out of the hand pump is causing the car to run lean, which could be the cause for your injectors to make that nailing sound. Id say for 500 bucks you got yourself a solid car. The hand pump is less than 30 bucks, dont bother rebuilding it they have an updated part that works alot better. then I would adjust your valves and change the oil. Give us an update on this car, dude.

  • chek your valves

  • sounds like a diesel almost

  • if it was blown i dont think it would start.. right? it sounds good to me, just that little leak. looks brand new in paint!

  • Your fuel pump is leaking pretty badly 0:20-0:25. The pump itself looks fine, just the seal needs to be replaced. That's all i can diagnose from the video.

Do a cylinder leak-down test or a diesel compression test to make sure its in spec.

Check the timing (even tho it sounds ok) to make sure its not off.

Check the engine and transmition before you put any money into it.

It sounds like you hot a good deal for $500.

  • THIS IS A DIESEL ENGINE, IT SUPPOSED TO MAKE THIS SOUND!

Diesels don't use spark plugs, they use compression alone to ignite the fuel. The rattling sound is the higher compression and the fuel detonating.

  • @allclear241 if you listen carefully you can hear a little piston slap dude

  • ok good news and bad news ... bad news ur primer pump is leaking it is that black thing spitting ou fuel around 0:20-0:25 and you might have a slight timing issue ... ok good news u DON'T have to replavce your primer pump!! it is very common for them to leak like that due to the fact that mercedes used a lether seal and over the course of time the fail... replace it with a cheep .49 cent rubber seal and check it every now and then just to make sure when u do that you might fix the knocking

  • In my country the same engines are even louder than yours. That's a diesel, the unique sound.

  • whast the problem???

  • if you think your engine is blown, then hear a 1988 ford transit, your engine sounds fine, just like a diesel should sound

good luck with that car, because it will last over 1mio miles :)

  • Part of the problem is the primer pump which is spitting out raw fuel. Replace it and it should run a bit better since air won't be able to get into the fuel system. Adjust the valves with the engine cold, do a compression check.

  • I think tha's OK. Old Mercedes diesels have this strange sound.

  • If you're concerned, why not do a compression test on it

  • There is absolutely nothing wrong with the motor. Change the fuel primer, and drive it for another 10 years. When a diesel spins a crank bearing, because of the high compression, most likely the engine would seize. Mine sounds exactly the same. Definitely change the filters. You got a great deal for $500. That motor will run on Diesel, home heating oil and Kerosene with no modifications. Kerosene is half the price of diesel.

  • Sounds like it's not getting enough diesel, and that leak, is that diesel? Hmm..

  • Run it ! Sounds normal to me , just a little duct tape on that pesky fuel leak and it will be as good as new !

  • Get it up to temp and change the oil. Hug the block, kiss the head and pray god is in love. clean the exhaust and spunk on the sump and pray that god is in love with you.

  • sound like you not to smart

  • It's NOT 'blown' (or turbo charged - couldn't resist) BUT it does need maintenance. Join (3 Ws peachparts [dot] com free and read x3)

1.Change all fluids&filters and replace the primer pump.

2.Get a manual and adjust the valves and injection timing.

3.Write to HessianImports -at- bellsouth -dot- net and send your injectors to be rebuilt.

It's easy to work on and it does have good life left in it. You just have to learn to turn a wrench.

  • paint looks great! :)

  • this is more of a hollow knocking. not good. what ever happened with the car did you get it fixed? I have an 82 240D. :)

  • thats how a diesel should sound

  • yeah all diesels sound that way. mercedes is no different. but your do have a bleeding fuel pump.

  • its peeing

  • youve either got a rod knock, a spun bearing or some major valve clatter.

  • Hey, 'ripetomatoes', How can you hear a rod knock, spun bearing or valve clatter over all that diesel engine noise?

  • Sounds like you broke your A/C condenser.

  • they all sound like that - is it cold too? bet it quietens down when its warmed up

  • yeah it sounds like valve clatter to me. I dont know much about diesels, but i wud poly ge a headj, js have h valves re-seated,the cam grinded mildly, and som lucas with eve oil change. but im no diesel pro

  • ill give you 600???

  • Im jealous of you west coast guys. You'd have to pay out the ass in Indiana to get a older Merc with a body that clean. Roadsalt and older Mercedes dont mix.

  • JUNK

  • Why post if you don't know *DAMN* thing about the car, and just say "JUNK"? It's not junk it's the Fuel Pump.

  • i love those retro steering wheels. Wonedr why the later 115s haven't got them?

I'm looking at a w115 next week any thing I should look out for apart from the dreaded metal worm?

    GreenO.

  • sounds ok to me, I have a 307D with the same motor. they all knock like that. you had a bargain there

  • you're going to need a new fuel bleeder pump (the thing pissing) and some diesel purge. the thing's fine.

  • I'll give ya $550!

  • sounds like a normal older diesel, but that liquid pissing out is not normal.

  • dude they sound like that new change the oil it will sound better

  • wanna sell it i love these cars

  • German Hammer :) these mercedes diesels always sounds vely loud

  • dude its a diesel they all knock like a bastard

  • sounds like a diesel.

  • it is diesel

  • Dude you need to close that valve on your Bosh pump. And clean nozzles!

  • It sounds normal to me. those diesels usually sound like that

  • hey its cra cra cra noise from motor it is a diesel motor?

  • sounds like you need a valve adjustment. just did it on my 240D, and the car runs smooth and a lot faster! Like twice as fast now! Which is a lot for a 240D. I dont have impatient drivers behind me anymore.

  • It's hard to kill these cars. I would say the only thing that can reliably kill them is lack of oil changes, or letting one run without oil.

Otherwise, change the oil and adjust the valves, and trust that you'll have a motor that will LONG outlast even the car surrounding it.

  • Hey replace the Injectors and the hand pump and you will have a good car I own 2 Benz diesels and I work on them that is nothing if no blow by or very little its still a god car

  • I'll wager it's just valve adjustment, Nobody ever does it. I've gotten a bunch of W115 and W123 240D with "blown" engines that just needed a valve adjustment...

  • It doesn't sound too bad..it's only an old diesel engine.

  • sounds like a crook injector or its a really cold morning

  • Apart froma slight diesel leak, you got a bargain! It sounds great! The previous owner obviously doesn't know a thing about cars!

  • sounds healthy to me probly needs a tune up and a few others minor things mine sounds alot like that and mines a 78 with a diesel

  • For 500 dollar i would buy one in that condition without an engine at all !

  • sounds like a tractor

  • What?

    SO cheap?

    Unbelievable for su...

  • Not bad for $500 fix it up and you have a nice drive.overhere you dont buy it for that kind of money.(the netherlands)GOOD LUCK.

  • I would do the following. Fix the fuel leak. A newer designed Bosch primer pump is about $25. Second, a valve adjustment. Third, check the vacuum pump. Sound could be coming from there. Since the vid is 6 months old, what was the verdict??

  • no its not blown you lame its diesels, thats the way they all sound

  • is that an airplane motor ?

  • ahhhhhhhh diesel sound good to me good find

  • lol... any diesel can knock... turbo or not. he needs new injector nozzles and probibally rings but it sounds great other than that, the fuel you see leaking is from the primer pump, replace that and you will have a better time starting too.

  • its amazing you can get that car for 500 bucks in the us. doesnt sound blown to me

  • Sounds good to me.

Has run some miles, to the sound of it.

    But it seems just fine!

  • Yes it is blown. Sell it to me ;-)

  • Sounds fine. Try screwing in the primer pump (the thing leaking) you use that when your fuel lines have air in them like when changing fuel filters. If you dont screw it back down it will leak like that.

    Enjoy!

  • Sounds good to me, man I love diesels, oh shit wait on 0:18 NOW I see the problem, lolz. yeah it'll be fine though.

  • diesel dude, not blown lol

  • fuel primer pump not screwed in or leaking. adjust valves.. but still sounds good.

  • I think it sounds beautiful

  • AenillCPaj ur a moron u only get knock when its a TURBO diesel because the compressed air from the turbo ignights the fuel not the spark...he doesnt have a turbo...so no knock

  • that was just a fuel pump leakin prob a blown gasket but it might have blown a head gasket if there is oil leakin alot every where or water is comin outta the exhaust its blown but u should be good.

  • no engine OK.its good

  • slap a turbo and heads and maybe a manual tranny and race that bitch ive seen people go in the 11's with those

  • nort rong wit thick injun, jus fix thik leeke fing..

  • It's a diesel. dont worry about the diesel knock. Get that spurting fuel leak fixed and ittl run fine

  • I agree, it sounds pretty good, like most "2xxD" Benz diesels I've heard. Hard to tell but tailpipe smoke looks normal dark gray/blue. Fuel leak s/b fixed...

  • The injectorpump is leaking. There is an oil stain on the valve cover. I bet if you remove the oil cap while the engine is running you will see massive blowby.

  • Sounds great!

  • throw some restore in the pistons regain that compression check the valves u might have a dead one

whack it with a mallet ;)

diesels are always louder gas and smoke clean her out redline her change oil too!!

  • I Have restored A 1978 240D to Show room Condtion, did everything you can think of doing to it (that Includes rebuilding the motor) And it is just as loud as yours, and yes it smoke also. your just fine, just fix that fuel leak, and your all set

  • try throwing some diesel conditioner in the fuel tank or pure bio diesel i could work

  • does it smoke from the oil cap when opened?

  • horrible valve tap

  • No it is not "blown" as you say. If it was blown, you would hear much louder noises and it wouldnt run that great. The sound is very normal for a diesel. That ticking is probably just the valves. Not a huge problem. Also, the white exhaust is most likely unburnt fuel. My ford diesel truck smokes white clouds in the morning on a cold day.

  • i don't know about some of the other comments, just because they heard one before it doesn't mean it's the right sound. You bought this car at a very good price, the body looks in very good condition. you should do a complete routine engine check up, and fix anything that needs fixing. it shouldn't cost to much, and spare parts are easily available at decent prices.

  • i think is blown because the smoke from the exhaust might be white and from the engine sounds TIK TAK

  • normal they all sound like that my dad has a 240d an his is louder

  • your MB W115, 240D 2.4 in line (motor: OM616) Diesel, is in a good condition considering age and price. it's normal the "squezing" sound of the valves. you need to see if it's starts in the first attempt, because if it doesn't the motor looses compression in the cylinders, but it's normal for a MB. i have a MB w123 2.4 1976 and has almoust the same prolems. be very carefull with the leak. you have a car for millions of km. at least i have one with 2083430 km. good luck.

  • sounds like a normal old Mercedes to me.. but what do i know... i just own 2 of them :-)

  • Doesn't sound great, and you obviously have a fuel leak in there. Video wasn't good enough quality that I could tell the color of the smoke coming out the tailpipe. If that's white smoke, then you probably have a blown head-gasket. If it's grey or blue, then I say drive it. Fix the fuel leak, have the valves adjusted (VERY important!) and drive it.

  • I thinck these car at the normal condition.
