You should really look into the work of Masanobu Fukuoka.
If you plant clower or even lay down straw straw between the plants, you need to do very little weeding and don't have to spray 'modern' poisons on the crop.

@tigerone1970 What I don't understand about the concept of global economic growth is, what is the long-term vision? Is the whole world destined to become a sprawling metropolis, with all animals restricted to parks and zoos? Does EVERYWHERE need to sustain humans, grow crops, with electricity and plumbing, etc? Why do people assume this is how it SHOULD be? Tribes thrived without the need for all these modern trappings so why is western culture & technology now a model to be demanded everywhere?
