in the international version it said the reason they could play underwater is because Bliztball players can hold their breath longer. Says so in the game. Since we have no idea how similar the people in Spira are to humans or the oxygen density or their planet, anything past that is just speculation. Someone held their breath almost 20 minutes underwater, breathing compressed air before they went under.

Regardless of my feelings toward the rest of the game, I do still believe Final Fantasy X has one of the best openings in a Final Fantasy game. There's so much going on, it hooks you immediately, and it's the kind of cutscene you'd see almost entirely differently if you went back and watched it again once you just beat the game.
