Good info. I shoot with a pro body, but learned early on that its all about the glass.

Unless you need the high ISO or speed, an entry level cam with good glass will be fine.

The Canon 550d is far from an entry level camera, and it's a much better camera than the sigma 28-300mm f/something is a lens so the test is hardly fair, Something more along the lines of a canon 10d or Nikon D40

A lot of bang for the buck going on here, best key is to get as good a lens as you can with a 550 or 60D and you'll be amazed what you can get.
