Cziffra's combination of musicality, virtuosity and imaginative flair are superb here. This must be one of his best ever recordings of a Liszt transcription. His playing gives me goose bumps. Incredible!
I'd like to play it just like he does. It' s full of ideas, it is colorfull and because of that- powerful. He makes huge contrasts and he also links all well. Nothing else to add. I love that!
@ayso78 Thanks for the pointer to Arrau. Another top version! - hard to distinguish between him and Cziffra! Both have crystal clear runs and arpeggios, observe the dynamics carefully and shape the phrases exquisitely. I think I prefer Cziffra atm still. His playing of the sequences in bars 33 and 35 always knocks me over.
This is by far the BEST performance of this piece on YT! Way ahead by far in musicality of all the others. Sgouros plays it way faster but with no feeling for the music at all, with a horrible result. Yundi Li is good but this is better. Cortot, Godowsky and Pachmann all have great interpretations but with some idiosyncrasies. I love the way Cziffra shapes every phrase with meaning, and his dynamics show incredible control and clarity. THis has to be the best rendition.
Very very good. :) yundi li takes after this style. Yundis is better tho over all. But here parts of it are better then yundi. But then again. The yundi videos are live. Which makes a big difference.
He is not afraid of breaking the rules to make it alive. With that kind of sensitivity he can't reach everybodys heart in cold times like we have today.
Cziffra is a genius. We all can see the centre of the target after his hits. A talent strikes the targets wich we all have known before. Thats the difference. Thanks to everybody who made Cziffra possible and that he was born in times of recording.
I saw Dmitri Sgouros perform here in Perth , Western Australia about ten or twelve years ago. He recieved a standing ovation that lasted ro a full ten minutes, but he never played this Rigoletto Paraphrase during his encores. Does anyone know what became of Sgouros as he seems to have vanished off the radar ??? I have heard Sgouros play his version and although its brilliant ,I prefer Cziffra`s version - not quite so flamboyant and taken at a frenetic pace that beggars belief.
No don t compare...not again...
Youtube is not some stupid competition! It s more like a library where sometimes you might find some treasures,... like this baby right here... : )

@amanderj Agree that Cziffra knocks this one out of the park, but do check out Arrau's account as well.
