  • Black people used to drress so nicely back then

  • A GREAT SONG FROM GREAT SENSATIONS!!!!!

  • putain la choré lol

  • I like the original recording, but this is good. Plus, I always love seeing an actual performance instead of an album cover when watching old songs. (Btw, I'm 20, Motown, Soul, Girl Groups, 60's, all of it- favorite music ever!) :)

  • I wish I was living in this era (with: Motown, Beatles, Elvis, etc.) so I could enjoy these songs better than today's music as new songs.

  • FANTASTIC SONG FROM THE LATE 60'S

GREAT SONG IN THE EARLY YEARS OF SMOKEY ROBINSON

  • This and Handel's Messiah - the two best songs ever.

  • So precious to see such a great copy of a classic. Thanks so much for sharing.

    <3

  • R.I.P Martin Marv! This is better than today's music

  • 2 people didn't shop around.......

  • RIP Marv! :(

  • R.I.P. to original Miracles member Marvin "Marv" Tarplin (June 13, 1941 – September 30, 2011) One of the greatest guitarists and songwriters of ALL TIME !! Marv....you will be missed !!!

  • This is the exact opposite of what my mom told me.

"Mom, should I shop around before I get a husband?"

    SLAP

  • I think I was 9 years old when i bought this 45, but the B side was my favorite, Who's Loving You

  • Love this song , thanks for uploading it , great sound quality !

  • Smokey and the Miracles hit #2 in Billboard, 1-20-61. God bless ya, brother Smokey! Thanx, motownboy, for postin' it!

  • My buddy Skip was a Temptations man. Me!! I was into Smokey! Truth be told both groups were to cool!! Anyone that isn't groovin to this is not alive!

  • I danced to this song in dance class when I was six. Seven years later, I hear this in Rock History and I'm like, OMFG!!!!

  • it never ceases to amaze me to watch an audiance... there are so many clueless people out there here they are sitting in a studio while smokey and the boys sing ( lipsynch I aknowledge..but still at least WATCH the guys no they have to stare straight ahead ... what idiots duhhhh... i would be embaraased today if hthere was a clip of me in lalal land while some artist was singing or performing

  • @terrydaytripper2 Times were different back then! We, white folk that watched these guys had no freakin idea or care as to how to react. We had no bloody idea what soul was! or how to move our tight assed bodies. We still loved the music! The singers! The set in time! We weren't clueless! as you are illiterate! We just were growing up to new experiences not taught us.

  • @terrydaytripper2 haha! But at least they are clapping OFF the beat.

  • 1 person didn't shop around and married a ho!

  • AWSOME, WISH I LISTEND TO THIS 6 YEARS AGO!

  • I REMEMBER I COULDNT WAIT TO HEAR THIS ON THE RADIO. IT DID SOMETHING TO MY SOUL I KID YOU NOT.. WHAT A SONG.

  • Polished...perfect!

  • no need for autotunes!

  • @KGArtist unless your zapp and roger those guys can auto tune all they want cus they do it so well

  • @animal03181989 That is sooooooooo TRUE!!!!!...."IIIIII wanna be your man!" lol

  • I LOVE THIS SONG!!!, COME AND JOIN MY OLD SCHOOL MUSIC GROUP ON FACEBOOK AT CHERRY WEBB'S OLD SCHOOL ZONE.

  • he sure points his finger quite confidently

  • Class!

  • Smokey Robinson, was so cute back then, and even now he is absolutely gorgeous, and this opinion is coming from a 31 year old. I love his music. He always tells a good story with meaning.

  • Never heard this before. The stereo version on the Motown Box is the same as the 45 version, except that it's in stereo. They also did the same thing with "Do You Love Me" by the Contours. Motown Box is well worth buying because of all the extended stereo versions on it.

  • they should be inducted they helped make motown

  • @bulletft the miracles, the temps, 4 tops, and supremes were motown

  • @Tonithenightowl You're right....but THE MIRACLES were the FIRST. Berry Gordy himself said: " Without The Miracles, there would have been NO MOTOWN" .

  • @williamg2552 Motown was like breath of fresh air to the music industry. It took R& B to a new level and brought some of the best vocal and dance music to the people of our generation. It stood right along side the British Invasion and exploded into musical history. We called it "soul music" and that's what it was, music for the soul. Thanks for responding.

  • FYI this is the "alternate" vocal and not the hit version, but great sounding either way! I've heard attempts to fix this mix with the original vocal and one of them turned out pretty well and I added it to the library. Motown recorded this on a 3 track machine and like the Contours' hit "Do You Love Me" they erased the original vocal after cutting the 45 master and recorded a different one, so the original is 'locked' on the mono hit version, but there are mixes of both that are decent.

  • mr soul

  • I feel the rhythm and I hear the blues. Smokey's really got a hold on me.

  • A #1 hit for The Miracles on the Rhythm & Blues charts. It was the 74th #1 R&B hit of the Rock Era. This hit also marked 2 firsts: It was the first #1 hit of a fledgling record company called Motown. It was also the first new #1 R&B hit of 1961, knocking Jerry Butler out of the top spot (He Will Break Your Heart).

  • @mkl62 Also, although not a well-known fact , THE MIRACLES' "Shop Around", although only reaching #2 on the BILLBOARD Pop chart, did indeed reach #1 Pop on the Cash Box Magazine Top 100 chart . It was also the Motown Label's first -ever million-selling record.

  • @williamg2552 There seems to be several charts: Billboard, Cash Box, Radio & Records, etc. I tend to gravitate towards Billboard.

  • That was excellent. Thank you

  • smoke te man i can't lie,but not the best dancer........

  • Man am hearing me Claudette on this. Sounding GOOD.

  • great sound -- thx

  • More songs inducted into the GRAMMY HALL OF FAME than ANY OTHER MOTOWN GROUP. The mighty MIRACLES. (AND, this SONG is ONE of them.)

  • yes they did have Stereo it came on lps in 1957

  • 31016 views really??? people always talking bout "good music" well this is good music and it needs more views so tell every body to look at all this music from 50s 60, 70, cuz its amazing

  • These guys could throw down...serious, old-school professional musicians.

  • This is another great 50s rock and roll classic.

  • Love the guitar pinging. great. Smokey not inducted? thats crazy? All the song writing??? Hah?

  • @radiotubes Smokey IS inducted. That's not the problem. The RRHOF Induction Commitee inducted HIM ALONE, and SHAFTED the other MIRACLES, BOBBY ROGERS, RONNIE WHITE , PETE MOORE, CLAUDETTE ROBINSON, and MARV TARPLIN.

  • @radiotubes That's not the problem. The problem is that Smokey was inducted ...alone, while the rest of The MIRACLES, BOBBY ROGERS,PETE MOORE, RONNIE WHITE, CLAUDETTE ROBINSON, and MARV TARPLIN were left out of the Hall of Fame. ALL of THE MIRACLES deserve induction. NOT JUST HIM. All of the other major MOTOWN groups were inducted INTACT . How can the RRHOF continue to ignore Motown's FIRST, and MOST IMPORTANT GROUP due to POLITICS AND STUPIDITY ??

  • Nice! His momma has some good advice!

  • me recuerda a Frankie de "Meet the Robinsons". Estoy seguro que sacaron el look de la ranita de Smokey Robinson

  • Solid ! I heard that they did like 90 takes making this record

  • Thanks for the upload 10 stars. I love hearing these song, reminds me of home, Detroit, Michigan. We lived 2 blocks from Motown Records To the pinhead who voted down, You Better Shop Around, to another sight : P. You're not a true fan.

  • I love the Smokey ...

  • This must of been one of the early takes like 59 or something it still sounds good

  • motownboy, this is completely cool. What a great job on the sound mix. I don't think I've ever heard this song so clearly and richly. And the video is priceless too. You've made my day (especially after another Lions' defeat).

  • One of my favourite Smokey songs.. brilliant!! xx

  • born raised and still living in cleveland the hometown of rock and roll and i've got to say these guys deserve to be in the hall of fame the temptations are in it don't get why there not

  • Fantastic record one of my favs ,,,

  • Miracle BOBBY ROGERS (the tall one) also turned 70 on the same day , He and Smokey were born on the SAME day, Feb 21,1940, and in the SAME Detroit hospital !!!

  • Swear?

  • @55949erfan ...yep. Go go Wikipedia and look up " The Miracles".

  • dam i love this one..listen to it evrytime i get mad baked

  • This is the kind of music that get you in the move to dance.

  • Happy birthday Smokey,70 today!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    Thanks for the tunes.

  • Great advice! We danced our ass off to the music, some of us listened to the advice and some didn't. It was all good.

  • what a great song!

  • Fantastic audio quality! I get the feeling this is a different vocal take from what was actually released, but it is quite close.

  • I love that ! Great quality ! The choregraphy is so funny !

  • it's not so funny, pal, it's BRILLIANT

  • The crisp sharpness of early black & white TV cameras really comes through on this video, even though it appears to be a kinescope transfer.

  • We didn't have stereo yet in 1960.

  • LOL!! The first widespread commercial release of stereo LPs date back to about 1957. RCA was recording classical music in stereo from 1954. Movie soundtracks were recorded right on to 35MM film with more than one channel of sound in the 1940s such as the original version of Disney's "Fantasia."

  • @THEmotownboy: I'll not only back up THEmotownboy, but will add to what he posted - it's to my understanding the earliest stereo recording dated back to 1927 with a recording of organ music.

  • @THEmotownboy ... "Stereo" goes back to the 1920s , when "Experimental" 78-R.P.M. Records were-pressed with Two Separate Parallel Sets of Grooves , to be played with Two "Horns" ... BING CROSBY was an Early Investor in what-became the 3-M Company , and was recording on Three-Track Tape as early as 1933. These Recordings were-then mixed-down to One Track for a Better "Mono" Sound ... I would LOVE to locate These "Master" Tapes !!!

  • Wow........................now thats what i call music, man why can't i go back in time. Instead im stuck with today's idiots who think they can dance, not to mention sing.............please!!!!!!

  • best music video on youtube - the suits, the glimpse of the studio audience, the moves and above all the the seriously young smokey. I was 5 when this record came out - you've made an old man 'appy, guv !!!!!!! ta.

  • the ROCK AND ROLL HALL OF FAME Induction committee has shafted a LOT of artists by denying them induction....but THIS is ONE GROUP they shouldn't have shafted by denying them induction . THE MIRACLES deserve to get in .... more than many that are already are there !!!

  • Absolutely, I wholeheartedly agree!!!

  • @williamg2552 you gotta be kidding. They're not in the Hall?????? Shame on them. Talk about important to the whole rock and roll phenomenon....the Miracles were, in my humble opinion, among the architects of what we call rock and roll.

  • @coyotesong You better believe it !! THE MIRACLES started the entire Motown phenomenon...and have won every known award that a recording group can win..EXCEPT RRHOF induction !! They inducted Smokey ALONE 23 years ago, left the other Miracles out, and have stubbornly REFUSED to correct this error for over 2 DECADES, while all of the other Motown groups were inducted intact !!! THE MIRACLES' success PAVED THE WAY for EVERY Motown act that followed them!! They should have been inducted YEARS AGO !

  • They sure are sharp suits!

  • brilliant

  • Sounds better than that horrible synch-up on the Motown box.

  • No town like Motown!!

  • Got me feet tappin'!! You sure you (THEMotownBoy) isn't Smokey himself?!! Don't matter where you got it, how you did it, its great sound. Ta!

  • other groups may be COOL... BUT THE MIRACLES RULE !!

  • awesome!!!! thank you for uploading.

  • amazing

  • what album is this stereo version on? Cant find it!!

  • It is not available on an album or CD.

  • so where'd you get it?

  • if you did this yourself how did you achieve such great sound?

  • Oooh that's a secret!

  • @THEmotownboy

They first recorded a bluesier, slower(?) version but Gordy felt that a "bouncier" more uptempo version would go over better on the national scene, and so it was re-released in a seemingly more commercially viable form, according to Wikipedia. Maybe you could put up the alternate take, mboy....

  • graet post. good reply to other one. really catches the quality. thanks man.

  • thanks for post dude!

  • amazing quality!

  • awesome memories, thanks for the post. :)
