Empire was unquestionably the best of the Star Wars series. Not incidentally, it is also the one which Lucas was LEAST involved in making. If the Star Wars series had ended w/ this movie, it would have been better. People like to think that Lucas ruined Star Wars w/ the muddled headed clueless "pre-quels," he lost me w/ Return. I have always hated the resolution of that movie. The "conflict" of Luke w/ Vader & the emperor was contrived.
@TheHeroofShadows000: All things must come to an end, whether it comes to a good or a bad end is the issue. I think the Star Wars series ended badly. I wish that ROTJ had never been made, or that Lucas had allowed someone else to do it, like he did w/ Empire. Do you like the supposedly dramatic "conflict" b/t Vader, Luke & the Emperor? It never made any dramatic or moral sense to me, thus it ruined the whole movie. Somehow Luke's striking @ the Emperor was supposed to compromise him, why?
@VictorLepanto Actually, he did with Jedi. Near the end of production however, he decided to write the rest of the script himself. And personally for me, I liked Jedi. And the prequels, I know they have alot of flaws. Just have casual conversation. I'm know we have different tastes and opinions, and I can see where you're coming from. At least look at it this way, Adywan and his team are re-creating them the way they should be: Without the things that alienated it from some viewers on the plot.
@TheHeroofShadows000: That is what I said, Lucas was more involved ROTJ, & he screwed it up. "The rest of the script." So, my perception of this bad ending is precisely his fault. The movie does start out well. I can't see how Adywan can fix the whole throne room scene w/o a dramatic re-editing. Perhaps if Luke holds back killing the emperor in hopes that Vader will turn, but that has moral problems as well. By delaying, Luke allows more troops to die in battle.
@VictorLepanto Redeeming your father is a good moral goal, but you also present a good point. The Emperor is right in front of you, you could end this now, go for it. I'll admit, I would've done that if I was in Luke's shoes. I mean, Vader has already been disabled, he lost his Lightsaber and his hand, I still have both of mine, he can't hurt anyone. The Emperor should be stopped.
@TheHeroofShadows000: Precisely! That is why I HATED that ending. It made no sense. It was an empty, forced, contrived moral pose. Luke literally kills 1,000s in the course of these movies. How many were on that 1st death star after all? How many died w/ Jobba the Hut? but here now, it is somehow unonscionable to kill the man who is centrally responsible for this war? I hope I haven't ruined the movie for you.
It should be quite easy for this guy to correct the issues I mentioned below. All you need do is build a model AT-AT (like those bought in the shops) and superimpose things like the head and legs on the clones in different positions to the walkers around them.
I've got no trouble with adding more AT-ATs. My trouble is that the added AT-ATs look like they're mirror images of one another, all with their head, legs and bodies in the same positions. Correct that and I'll be impressed.
One thing I remember as a kid was saying to my dad, "It's called STAR WARS but it ain't much of a war." --which is true. The only battles are really just sabotage missions. Hoth was the only "battle" but it is fought very unconventionally, tripping the useless AT-ATs with freakin' rope. I doubt the Separatist droids were tripped by rope.
@YesWeCantaloupe I guess you forgot the Endor fleet battle? As for the AT-ATs, IIRC they were chosen because they were considered more menacing\interesting than tracked or wheeled tanks.
So I don't know if there's any clue in the storyboards, screenplays or other film notes (I don't own "the art of ESB") but I think nine is probably excessive for the total number of AT-AT's. maybe 5 or 6 at the most, remember they have all those AT-STs.
That's the thing about the Empire, they don't NEED nine AT-AT's to take out Echo base. Four can do the job just fine. The blasters don't do jack, and it's only Luke's skills that let them do ANY damage to the walkers. So they take out three of them. But it's not enough. the base is destroyed, but the mission was accomplished: evacuate with most of the rebel personnel, especially the leadership and intell intact.
So yeah, adding more AT-ST's would make sense, but not more AT-AT's, nor anything else. the last thing I want to see is Rogue Squadron 2 and 3 re-enacted here. If you want that, go play those games, that's what they're there for. I can play battlefront and run around as Darth Vader hacking up rebels or Luke hacking up Snowtroopers on Hoth. Just not in the movie, please!
Adding lots of new fighters to the Death Star battle made sense, because the movie dialog clearly states that there are "thirty rebel ships" detected by the Death Star. It stands to reason that they'd therefore send more than nine TIE fighters to meet them. There's really no in-movie justification for adding that many more walkers, especially if we won't see them later. If anything, he should add in the AT-STs that we hardly see, but know are there from like 2 shots.
Wait, so the movie needs to be changed to match a VIDEO GAME made later? LOL, okay. By that logic Adywan needs to start putting all that EU stuff in there too, but he refuses to do so!
This is just fan service, because apparently, having just a few walkers didn't strike him as "realistic" enough, I guess... but I thought it was far more impressive that the Empire could steamroll them so easily. This isn't an epic battle, it was never meant to be. The games are a different universe.
I agree this battle needs to be one-sided. It'll be interesting to watch with more walkers added, but I can already tell that the number of snow speeders is too high.
Wow, people really hated that I didn't think ESB should be modified to mimic the games.
Listen, having guys running around on Taun Tauns firing blasters from both hands, wrestling with snow troopers, and thousands of walkers would look BADASS, but it would ruin the movie with wank.
This isn't an "epic battle" this is the starving rebels on the run from the overpowered Empire. "The Battle of Hoth" is just a delaying strategy of the desperate rebels while they cover an escape.
You can never have enough Imperial Walkers... ^_^

@VictorLepanto Hey, don't worry. It's alright. Every series has it's share of questionable plots. Nothing is perfect.

This is sadly one of the few badass moments for the Imperial Army. At least the Tie Fighter pilots had better aim than Stormtroopers.
