Not a fan of DT or Portnoy (the most over-rated drummer of this generation), but if they have anything to offer, Mangini will give them the opportunity. He's a true unique talent. Portnoy has tricks, but is little more than a banger who can play odd time. Nothing unique about him at all. In fact, Portnoy bores the shit out of me. No feel at all. I've heard more unique sounds come out of Phil Collins drum machine than Mike Portnoy.

I completely agree. I threw away all my DT cd's because of Portnoy's lack of musicality, and strained technique. He's had his moments, and I really want to like the guy, but I just can't. Now that Mangini is involved, they've made one of my favorite pieces of music, and have my attention.

I've been really getting annoyed with the last few albums b/c they had that "whipped together" feeling. (I know some will disagree.) And though they were each different, they somehow had so many common parts and similar sounds. In fact, I hear lot of the last few albums here. BUT... the other thing I hear is parts from EARLY albums, like Images and Words. This might be a comeback... they should've called this album RESURGENCE! Nice job, and about time.

@chochosymphony yes. That's what a drummer is meant to do. replace a metronome. It doesn't need to be complicated to be a good drum beat. Look at Nick Mason from pink floyd; he played simple beats with slow fills and it sounded great! Point? Simple beats can sound good. Also all these drum beats were programmed by John beforehand so he had very little input aside from playing it.

Is it just me, or shouldn't this song be called "Pull Me Over"? The musical map for this song is IDENTICAL to "Pull Me Under". For example: Verse 1a, normal / Verse 1b, intense / Pre-Chorus, cool guitar solo run / Chorus. Or another example: Chorus / Pre-Solo, mellow which progresses more intense / Guitar Solo / Post-Solo, funky riff / Chorus. Listen to the song with the musical map of "Pull Me Under" in your mind and you'll see how you can predict the section changes and their types!

I wasn't there and didn't see the whole Festival but Dream Theater are always the best band when they go to a Festival. The only bad point could be if Labrie has a bad day, otherwise the other 4 are always the best with their instruments and what comes out it's always AMAZING!
