  • My god, I think Linda in the mid-'70s is my ideal woman.

  • @markotdb1125, that's Dan Dugmore playing pedal steel guitar.

  • Her peers state she is the consummate song interpreter, and many of them are quite envious of her awesome pipes.

  • I've loved Linda since I first heard her on KRLA in the sixties. When I first saw her it got even worse, because she was so cute. This little lady has so much soul. I put her right at the top with Aretha.

  • Is that Jeff "Skunk" Baxter on the steel guitar? His riffs & body positioning seem familiar- great talent.

  • @markotdb1125 Dan Dugmore was playing the steel guitar on this video.

  • A super attempt to "studio-sync" a promo video! A "techy" note: most groups that record a promo video in that "make-believe-studio-enviroment", lip-sync to the recorded version, coming off a PA system, hidden somewhere in the foreground of the cameras. This time, even though the band was "syncing" to the recorded tracks, LINDA's approach was indeed very LIVE! (Note: If you remember the recorded version so well, as do I, she either missed or entirely skipped over her last "WHOOOO!" near the end!)

  • @BolsaChicaRadio Linda was definitely live on this version. I didn't realize the rest was the original studio recording. Very good job indeed. This is from Wonderland.

  • linda had a powerhouse voice liked the grit she could put into and she was alright to look at as well

  • nobody but nobody sings this song better than Linda <3

  • Usually I like the original version but Linda was amazing on this... better than Smokey

  • @DrakeGrad I agree about original versions. Linda often was able to outdo the original though. I think Johnny Rivers' version of this song is also better than Smokey's. This song probably wasn't his best effort.

  • I absolutely LOVE Linda!!!! Also fell in love with Adam Lambert for his rendition on American Idol 2 years ago. go check him out!

  • @dunsa123456 Smokey Robinson did this originally and he is a music genius. However, this is one song where his version is not the best. I think both Linda and Johnny Rivers outdid Smokey this time.

  • Sadly, Linda Ronstadt's version missed the connection with the Vietnam War which originally helped to make the song so popular. The song "Tracks Of My Tears," by Smokie Robinson & the Miracles, became a virtual anthem for many military personnel serving in Vietnam and elsewhere, myself included. Most of those soldiers (millions) were just not open to other later versions.

  • @stewartx5 My brother told me the song that was "the anthem" when he was in Nam was We Gotta Get Out Of This Place.

  • @John1948EightB Your brother was right; I don't know where stewartx5 was serving.

  • @Bozohotep Well, I just want to thank him for his service. You too since it sounds like you were there.

  • I LOVE YOU LINDA!!

    BEST LATINA SINGER EVER!!!

J.LO AND SHAKIRA, DON'T EVEN REACH YOUR ANKLES!!

  • It's one of the best covers---almost rivals the original! She gives a unique interpretation and doesn't try to copy--that's why it lasts.

  • I bet even Smokey'd like this cover!

  • @WytZox1 I'm sure he did ♥♥

  • John; Thanks for the upload of Linda. Without a doubt, one of the best. The one nice thing, though there are many, about my home State of Arizona was growing up around a lot of music. Just to the south of my home town of Flagstaff use to be a small little town called Tucson. One of the best talented singers in the world came from there...and of which greatly influenced my musical style for years to come. Few can touch as deep...

  • Ronstadt can take almost any song and make it sound better than the version that is some other singer's signiture song.

  • Sound quality from tape isn't great but, setting that aside, this is a near perfect performance. This has to be Ronstadt at her peak with her best band (Nashville guys here?). Just beautiful.

  • @swanstep No, not Nashville guys. I recognize Kenny Edwards from the Stone Poneys, Andrew Gold and Peter Asher among others from her 1975ish era.

  • Work song

  • Always loved the slide guitar at the end

  • @cottenbuster332

yes , it's a beautiful flourish at the end

  • Linda's vocals are beautiful!

  • The year of this recording , she was at her best from a Pop Music perspective. She is so talented and can do orchestra music, but this song and Different Drum brings back cool memories. Thks.

  • Brains, beauty (both inside & out) and unparalleled talent.

Since I first heard her in 1967, I’ve been a huge fan (and I must admit have had a secret crush on her like so many other men).

She has brought joy to many millions with her incomparable vocals, angelic voice and good deeds.

Johnnie Carson put it best, after hearing her sing, “When You Wish Upon a Star”, he said, “Now that’s real class!”

She is truly a national treasure.

Happy Birthday, Linda and best wishes for many more!

  • whomever disliked the vid is either a vid quality critic or has no taste in music

  • So sad that both Andrew Gold and Kenny Edwards in the backing band are now gone, much too soon. Thanks to both of them for so many outstanding recordings - they were vitally important to Linda Ronstadt's music in her heyday. And of course, many thanks to Linda, THE voice of my younger years...and beyond.

  • Shades of Carol King.......good!

  • What's the deal with not being able to vote up or down?

  • Without a doubt the most powerful rock voice of all time...no one is even close. I saw her in concert in the 70's at Radio City in NYC, and she will go down as one the great concerts I've ever seen.

  • first youtube video I've ever seen with 0 dislikes. :P rightly so

  • @ExitSiign aah your comment might have encouraged someone to dislike it.. hahah. I see 1 dislike..

  • @mrobispo83 Which would make them an idiot, the point of the buttons are to say whether you liked the video. :P Unless they really disliked the video.........

  • Smokey is such a great songwriter and performer - can't take anything away from "The Smoke". ...Linda also does this song so very well. Not only does she sing it, but, like Smokey, she FEELS it - it is so evident watching her here in this video and in videos of other sings she sings.....my hat is off to her.........

  • One of the greatest female singers ever

  • @CosmicTruthify yes and the cute little thing she did with her shoulders.

  • @CosmicTruthify She is one of the best ever in so many ways.

  • Robinson's songwriting skills coupled with Ronstadt's interpretation. Magic.

  • my favorite :)

  • Big love to everybody who realizes how brilliant Linda is.

  • bananastewss, I notice that the studio version of 'Lose Again' is up again...Write in Wonderland 1977 Chapter 9. Also, Linda's version of "The Star-Spangled Banner' has popped up again, briefly I'm sure.

  • Brilliant songwriting by Smokey Robinson, and an outstanding powerful performance by beautiful Linda. Doesn't get any better than this.

  • I love that the guy from All Music Guide called Linda an 'interpretive singer',. This is much more appropriate than calling her a 'cover artist', which seems to be a putdown because it sounds like she's mimicking the original, or maybe even stealing it. I never heard anyone call Maria Callas or Luciano Pavarotti 'cover artists'.

AND by the way, robinfra52, another beautiful song from the same session, 'Lose Again', seems to have disappeared too. I hope someone brings that one back!

  • @WUDI2 Thank you, you really summed it up beautifully. When I first started listening to her, I never even knew she was covering songs, I thought they were hers. She has a true gift of taking a song and making it hers. She sings the songs like she lived them, she feels it and makes you feel it. There is no one that even comes close to her, past or present, I just wish she would get the recognition she deserves. And yes, Lose Again, is one of my favorites too.

  • What a voice!

  • Happy Birthday Linda Ronstadt!!

  • Ooooh, she's so cute!

Havin' a hard time adjusting those headphones, aren't you, Linda?

I remember those - they were so heavy, when you took them off it seemed like gravity stopped working and you were flying! ; )

  • LOVE LOVE LOVE this song!

  • This one disappeared. Good to see it back. Awesome.
