normally I do not like to agrue the semantics of words, BUT, I will say that yes, a person can leave active duty of their own volition. If a person is sitting in the career planners office with a set of signed reenlistment papers, and he is 5 minutes away from another 4 years of active duty, and decides not to go through with it, that is a personal choice to leave active duty, and not continue with another enlistment.

well it makes sense if you're reenlisting, i honestly did not take that into consideration. I was talking in terms of your initial four year contract. Either way, there is an inactive reserve period (which i'm sure you know) and if you get called back then there really isn't much that can be done.
