Once i had a bunch of admerals and third rate, third v. third and second, and my 4 admerals v. their last admeral. I boxed him in, and i swear he (the admeral) saluted me and was then epicly pwned with 1 chain, one ball, and two grape. But it ruined the moment, the balls that missed kinda blasted each other and i nearly lost an admeral

Man, I have watched these over and over again and I still feel like a complete incompetent in Naval battles. Does not make any sense to me. Keep watching them and hopefully someday these will click. Plus Auto on VH/VH is hugely costly to me, which is the reason I keep watching these.

This is the flag of the United provinces, its still the same, but now we have an orange ribbon on the top (william of orange)

Wind was fine for AI at 2:50 AI is just bad. When you were on a beam reach initially (wind at a 90 deg angle) it would have been beneficial to 'try' to put the enemy on your port (downwind) side. Being upwind of your opponents gives you a maneuverability advantage.

A tactic I tried when my (AI) opponent was using the standard line astern/column formation was to form my fleet (about 3 3rd or 4th rates and several brigs) into a crescent (envelop) and I sailed them right at the enemy. At the last minute I got them to break formation and do a 90 degree turn all at once, allowing them all to fire broadsides at once, devestating the lead ship in the enemy formation.

@CraigDirty I'm gonna guess your counter attack for this is similar to mine. Turn side on to the opponents who are coming at you with full sail. Then fire broadsides of chain-shot at them. When all sails are out chain-shot is most effective. and at about a 5 first rate's distance, you can take out two masts in one broadside shot - Every effective!

Though I must add I've only done this in a 1 on 1 battle. I'm shit at using more than two ships.

To everyone who wants to know how to move your ships in a line as a unit -

It's pretty simple. Just highlight the ships you want to move in unison, and hit the group button on the command panel. Just like land units.

line of stern is a sound tactic but an experienced player can easily smash up a line of stern. the best thing to do wen an enemy deploys in a line is to intersect his line perpendicularly at more than one point. your ships will be firing both their broadsides along the length of the enemy's ships (a raking shot). if u have the wind guage this tactic works every single time.

one question...

i've tried this famed tactic known as "crossing the T" made famous by Nelson...

but when i try it it works for a while but then one of my ships rams an enemy ship and then the formation goes all to hell...

i found a tactic where if you put ur armada into two lines and have them run parallel to each other with the enemy line in the middle works effectively in surrounding and annihilating the enemy...

yea ramming is common... thats where your micromanagement kicks in. and that's exactly what Lord Neslon did at Trafalgar anyway, he crossed the Franco-Spanish fleet with 2 lines. but one thing everyone should keep in mind is that crossing the T is useless when your fleet is sailing downwind (i.e against the wind).
