the shadow priests are a sort of "angels of death" at least this is the symbolism used in the series..everyone is exterminated by these shadow sorcerer entities.

and are called priests because they serve the Emperor Shao Kahn, if you can remember MK 2 at the portal and tower there were shadow priests levitating in the air!

yeah, this was mortal kombat Konquest the final episode that left me with how the hell is that possible...oh they must be canceling the series and sure enough no more after they killed the entire cast off it made me realize that mk 4 finally killed mortal kombat and they had to cut the budget and the writers were like "oh yeah?"

They aren't great fighters, just mages.

The Shadow Priests are Shao Khans most loyal warriors and probably the strongest fighters within the series. In games they hang in the background because they have nothing to prove.

@jwunschie14 I'm not quite sure about my theory, but I can infer Shadow Preists are part of the Brotherhood of Shadow. Also that explains the dark powers, because the brotherhood of shadow is in the Neatherrealm (Hell)

and if these guys are part of it...they work for Quan-Chi . Sorcerer and Ruler of the Neatherrealm. That would also explain the sorcery.
