Saint-Saens wrote this as a party piece for a friends' reunion. and never intended it to be published. It is however a master piece in itself, showing his masterful skill at arranging.
Mother of God.Saint-Saens is one heck of a composer.I love his Carnival of the Animals!!!The Swan makes me want to cry oceans of tears. T.T And The Elephant is just hilarious. xD I love that he uses the double-bass to represent the elephant.I could not think of anything better than an elephant to go along with that instrument. It's HUGE,I tell you.And both the animal and the instrument emanate such LOW sounds, too.Perfect pair.

The swan can swim while sitting down. For pure conceit, he takes the crown. He looks in the mirror ova and ove - but claims to have never heard of Pavlova!
Camille "Sen Seans" was wracked with pains when people addressed him as "Saint Saints". He held the human race to blame because it could not pronounce his name. So he turned, with metronome and fife, to glorify - other forms of life. Be quiet please, for here begins, his salute, to feathers, furs, and fins. - Ogden Nash
@saullouis The lion is the king of beasts - and husband of the lioness. Gazelles and things on which he feasts, address him as "your hi-o-ness". There are those that admire him, in the African jungle and velts. But - I think, wherever a lion is ... I'd rather be somewhere else.
@guyboy625 Haha that's funny. I still consider myself a teenager psychologically but... I graduated from high school when I was 17. Wtf is your friend doing there?
@majav15mg I still consider myself a kid, and I probably still will when I'm 20. My friend's still there because he went to a computer science high school, which he ditched for regular public high school.

@IloveBadminton23 Interesting that if you consider the scene in Beauty and the Beast where Belle wanders into the West Wing, the Aquarium segment sounds sort of like it. It's intriguing and beautiful.

Yes! I've been searching for the song 'the aquarium' for ages, because I heard it in beauty and the beast a very long time ago and a while ago on the radio. Glad I found it, its so beautiful. (:

This is serious substantial music, Saint-Saens was perhaps too dismissive of this work. Tchikovskie did now care for his Nutcracker Suite thinking of it in the same way but it was a commercial success from the start so he could not stop it from being preformed. :)
This is a masterpiece, certainly the most imaginative and original of SS creations. The emotion is deep, regardless of the composer's intention, and says more than the serious work of his he felt so "important".
