  • If anyone were to ask me how to sing good. I would tell them to sing in perfect tune and perfect timing first before all these exercise. Actually there is three keys to sounding good. Tune, timing, and how you pronounce the words. Even if your voice is slightly off key it could make a big difference between sounding good and sounding really good. It is all about singing like a finely tuned instrument.

  • @tangnatalaga If you sing the right notes with improper technique you can kill your voice.

  • very good tip, ty!

  • He is great.

  • fine line between trying and yelling lol, i'm so going to use that when my friends singing

  • How are they moving around so much and getting a great sound? Uh... because they don't sing?!?! And broadway singers are like gods!

  • I used to sing more operistic music, and air is always an issue since opera or choir music is absolutly based on natural face space resonance in order to get more volume. And air and diafragm management is always more important on the first training years, because your not going to use microphone most of the time. So I think this video is a good tip for the majority of singers whom will mostly sing in front of a microphone instead of 'a capella'. It will help you keep your vocal chords alive.

  • Chris Keller tells me tension is bad, and Jesse Nemitz tells me tension is good. Which one should i listen to? lol

  • @guests123 I think it depends on the genre of music you are singing. In some music styles tension is bad, some styles tension would be needed. Like for Rock music, you tension to give out that scratchy, noisy voice. But in Operatic styles, or Romantic Pop music, you will need to have no tension in order to sing very pretty. Because those style of music requires pretty voices.

  • I think this gentleman is professional and passionate about singing technique, and all of you superficial idiots who commented on his looks do not deserve to comment about art techniques. There is nothing wrong with his eyes nor looks. In fact he is handsome. But it is not the point. GROW UP AND TRY TO GET SOME DEPTH IN LIFE.

I REALLY LIKE THIS VIDEO. MAKES PERFECT SENSE. BRAVO. THUMBS UP

Listen up Ytube fucktards...here's how the world works: In every high school there is ONE guy that every chick wants...and if you are NOT that one guy...then they don't give a fuck. • wow! that tipped helped a lot, night and day!

  • I haven't been in a choir group in 20 years, but I remember our choral director telling us to visualize our throat like a rubber band. Held tightly and stretched between the hands, it narrows and thins the flow of air and sound. Where if you only hold it with one hand, it returns to its round, open shape. Try to envision the throat as that relaxed ROUND open shape, like the untensioned rubber band. Worked great for me back then! :)

  • His eyes are much too big

  • Am I the only one who was almost shocked by his BIG BLACK SHINING EYES???

  • @006sick I want him to help me relax my throat.

  • @006sick I came to the conclusion that hes a vampire that reminds me of toby mcguire (Spiderman) OR Bugsy the guniea pig from bedtimestories. LOL. Bless him! <3

  • dude you look like rob dyrdek

  • your pupils....

  • *hair

  • U look better without the hair but y do all the guys on expertvillage always have different here o.O lol but the advice is helphing me sing better.

  • why is it every time i watch these guys, they have different hair cuts!?

  • So you don't think that the mass of the tongue pressing on top of the larynx causes vocal pressure? You should watch this video and notice that your neck makes a big pillow on top of your larynx when you do this. Also, when you talk normally, your sternocledomastoids stick out. Yeah, you're a stud on free singing. P.S. If there's no tension in singing then how do the vocal folds change pitch??

  • THAN YOU SO MUCH FOR POSTING, GOD BLESS ^^

  • Chris Keller is the best.

  • So people who want to sing should get expert help. And I believe that expert help should be free. Not cost money. Everyone should get help on youtube without having to pay a freakin dollar. That's the beauty of the internet, to expand yourself without paying for crap. "For the love of money is the root of all evil" SEEEEE?!?!?!? Ze bible is truth. selfishness is bad. It's better to make 5 people great at something then just one. Obviously. The world would be a more beautiful place. Teach :)

  • May be Chester from LP would agree with him :)

  • This channel confuses me... there's a video that says we want tension and not strain.. but this video says we DON'T want tension.

  • @popups46okay

I think you watched the compression video. Compressing the voice has a sort of strain but not a strain where you're hurting your voice.

  • @popups46okay Same..I think whether or not you're straining, if you sound good that's all that matters lol. Call me an idiot for thinking this but I feel that strain/tension on vocal cords is the same as pumping iron. When you work out, DUH you feel strained because you're pushing your Schwarzenegger muscles to the max but that's what happens when you do it. When you excersice you're GOING to feel pain at some point, this also applies to singing.

  • @nddlj No you're not an idiot at all.. that's a nice way to look at it. I agree that as long as you sound good that's all that matters. But that only applies if you're singing Pop or Rock songs though. If you're singing like Ballads, Opera.. you can't be straining your throat, you have to sing nicely and relaxed. Notice when you watch Pop singers or Rock bands you see how their face react to the song and you see veins on their neck.. that's because they're straining it.

  • @nddlj continue... for me I don't want that, you have to sound good and look good at the same time. It's just this video that confuses me, that says on the other video we WANT tension, but this one says we DONT want tension. I'll prolly take their some of their advice but I don't want tension nor straining at all.

  • @popups46okay Yeah I agree...because pop singers don't sing through their diaphram it's all in the throat. I guess it's just practice and watching Youtube videos on how NOT to strain your voice when singing that will help us not only to sound good but to feel good when singing.

I don't think you should be feeling a whole lot of pain when singing those hard notes so, in my opinion, no pain is better than pain :)

  • i'm a tenor but does that reallty matter? i don't think so because you can practice in different keys

  • my notes keep breaking, whether its a lower note or higher, i cant stop breaking. There's no tension, and i dont scream hard, but when i want to apply more volume, it just cracks. Its frustrating, what can i do?

  • @Jetkimchrea Watch alot of brett manning vids every day

  • his talking voice sounds like toby mcguire lol

  • @larymullenjr agreeee!

  • helped alot thanks.

  • Is it just me, or do there coaches talk about the problem, and never show how to fix it???? I have watched a lot of these videos, and have not gotten any answers.

  • @tonkin4christ you have to book a lesson, that defeats the purpose of promoting the site if you get the remedy to a vocal fault on a free video. Also, ever voice it different, and a remedy for a vocal fault may be different for one tenor with a large voice versus a tenor who has a light small voice, etc...

  • Practice makes perfect.

  • great tips,great video

  • You have wonderful tips Chris!n Thanks for sharing :)

  • nothing these ppl have posted have helped me

  • @8000cheese LOL

  • i've never seen brett manning sit up straight.

  • i cant seems to relax my throat..even my falsetto is pulling "chest".been like that for years..went for speech level singing, during warm up with the teacher, even when i am pulling,he asks me to continue to go higher but im squeezing very hard already. He said that because need time to allow the good habits to come out but if during warm up, i am still using bad habits, how is it possible for the good one to come out??

  • Like when you "FLEX"..lmao good stuff..

  • hes so cute! haha

  • A lot of truth here!

  • 5 stars

  • argh. this is me. i cant seem to get my head around not relaxing my muscles. my throat hurts

  • may be to much compression in vocal chrods, or u have polyps or something go to doctor vocal choach and maybe u have reflux who knows or maybe you THINK that u are doing it relaxed but u are not.

  • @Sarahg12816 Think about talking. Sing with that same effort. Don't add anything else. Just sing like you're talking :) hope it helps a bit

  • hey, thnx this helped alot.. usually i'd get this tension and i thought that it was because i was trying to hard or something but now that i actually relaxed that area I'm not getting that anymore. ^_^ thnx for posting!!

  • awesome tip, had that problem for so long and already seen some results, thanks!

  • still not impressed until I see a baritone or bass with some range. Working with tenors and altos doesn't take a lot of work.

  • What kind of range? "Raw range" or the highest mix one can achieve? I'm a lighter baritone, I can reach Ab5 in a mix thanks to this program, if that means anything to you. Regardless, you can't deny the value of the program just because most of the people they feature are tenors. Unfortunately, not so many baritones and basses even try to sing nowadays, because its just not so much featured in commercial music. They have featured a few of them, don't remember which ones tho.

  • I've always been a natural bass, and am just now starting to bridge at Ab/A in a couple of my vocal exercises. I am not comfortable yet with doing songs where the range is up in that area. Actually my overall goal is to be able to get up to the soprano high C because that way, I should have no problem singing in the range of regular pop and R&B songs. I, too, though, would actually love to be able to sing opera arias for tenors. That would be sweet :)

  • @tributevocalist Hey I have the exact thinking as you! I really admire singers that can go all the way up like Adam Lambert. I also wish that one day tenor high Bs and Cs would be very easy for me. Right now, my throat tenses up on tenor high As, I'm trying to sing them soft in head voice and gradually add chest to it.

  • @marklung Amen. I used to get some really high notes but they are really tough for me now

  • Eddie Vedder my man!

  • Eddie Vedder has one of the most distinguishable voices in alternative music. Every time you hear him sing, you know it's him! :)

  • @napilopez Pete Steele man

  • @napilopez that's so true, it's like the tenors a placed on a higher pedistal in the commercial world, i wish i was a tenor rather than a baritone

  • @mrkeynyones I was classified as a bass voice but after a year with SLS I can now sing any tenor notes easy. dont give up

  • @gguitar321 oh trust me, i'm not, but it's still a bit saddening when u can't reach those notes

  • @mrkeynyones ya i know. but it will come if your working with the right teacher

  • @napilopez i thought baritone is a common voice that most men have

  • @napilopez Im a baritone too...tryin to get better...maybe i need to book a class with them? how did you do it?

  • @napilopez Matt bellamy's a baritone

  • You should watch some Josh Young videos or Norm Lewis. They have easy high c's. The main difference in a voice should be timbre not range. That being said it is harder for a bass/bari to figure out the "mix" because he has thicker longer vocal cords to stretch.

  • I am aware of this, and as far as Josh Young and Norm Lewis...neither of their singing styles are remotely impressive to me.

  • Well you are positive and that's good.

  • LOL...it's just not my style. But thanks for the advice my Colorado friend.

  • thank you!!!!!

  • i never knew that because hayley williams is always all over the place and she still sounds great that's a really awesome tip thanks

  • thanks...I'll try it out

  • Great tip... Thank you:)

  • the 12 cd package is a few years old... so while its a good program... there are alot of "new" exercises and techniques that arent incorporated into the 12 CDs. But the 12 cds are a good foundation to get going and establish a basis to do the new exercises and advancing

  • So all this information you throw in the videos is already included in the 12 CD package?

  • yeah.. but there are more effective lessons on singing success.. haha

  • If you are subscribed to SSO (yearly it's the best deal). You'll see the applications of all the exercises from the 12 CD SS, and by the way there is also "Mastering the Mix" program that is coming up I believe before the end of the year, and it's more advanced. Still, the original program helped me recover and extra octave so I recommend it.
