If anyone were to ask me how to sing good. I would tell them to sing in perfect tune and perfect timing first before all these exercise. Actually there is three keys to sounding good. Tune, timing, and how you pronounce the words. Even if your voice is slightly off key it could make a big difference between sounding good and sounding really good. It is all about singing like a finely tuned instrument.
I used to sing more operistic music, and air is always an issue since opera or choir music is absolutly based on natural face space resonance in order to get more volume. And air and diafragm management is always more important on the first training years, because your not going to use microphone most of the time. So I think this video is a good tip for the majority of singers whom will mostly sing in front of a microphone instead of 'a capella'. It will help you keep your vocal chords alive.
@guests123 I think it depends on the genre of music you are singing. In some music styles tension is bad, some styles tension would be needed. Like for Rock music, you tension to give out that scratchy, noisy voice. But in Operatic styles, or Romantic Pop music, you will need to have no tension in order to sing very pretty. Because those style of music requires pretty voices.
I think this gentleman is professional and passionate about singing technique, and all of you superficial idiots who commented on his looks do not deserve to comment about art techniques. There is nothing wrong with his eyes nor looks. In fact he is handsome. But it is not the point. GROW UP AND TRY TO GET SOME DEPTH IN LIFE.
I REALLY LIKE THIS VIDEO. MAKES PERFECT SENSE. BRAVO. THUMBS UP
Everybody bagging on this guys image. Listen up Ytube fucktards...here's how the world works: In every high school there is ONE guy that every chick wants...and if you are NOT that one guy...then they don't give a fuck. College: Same deal

So STFU, let this talented guy give your stupid monkey ass a FREE vocal lesson.
I haven't been in a choir group in 20 years, but I remember our choral director telling us to visualize our throat like a rubber band. Held tightly and stretched between the hands, it narrows and thins the flow of air and sound. Where if you only hold it with one hand, it returns to its round, open shape. Try to envision the throat as that relaxed ROUND open shape, like the untensioned rubber band. Worked great for me back then! :)
@006sick I came to the conclusion that hes a vampire that reminds me of toby mcguire (Spiderman) OR Bugsy the guniea pig from bedtimestories. LOL. Bless him! <3
u must read this. once u have started there is no turning back. a little 10 year old girl was raped and murderded in 1945. her body was not found until 1947. then a boy last week read this and did not copy and paste this message. the dead girl appeared in his room haunting him and killed him. if you do not copy and paste this onto 10 vidoes in 30 minutes the dead girl will apear in your room tonight and haunt you and kill you. well you better start to copy and paste to be saved
So you don't think that the mass of the tongue pressing on top of the larynx causes vocal pressure? You should watch this video and notice that your neck makes a big pillow on top of your larynx when you do this. Also, when you talk normally, your sternocledomastoids stick out. Yeah, you're a stud on free singing. P.S. If there's no tension in singing then how do the vocal folds change pitch??
So people who want to sing should get expert help. And I believe that expert help should be free. Not cost money. Everyone should get help on youtube without having to pay a freakin dollar. That's the beauty of the internet, to expand yourself without paying for crap. "For the love of money is the root of all evil" SEEEEE?!?!?!? Ze bible is truth. selfishness is bad. It's better to make 5 people great at something then just one. Obviously. The world would be a more beautiful place. Teach :)
@popups46okay Same..I think whether or not you're straining, if you sound good that's all that matters lol. Call me an idiot for thinking this but I feel that strain/tension on vocal cords is the same as pumping iron. When you work out, DUH you feel strained because you're pushing your Schwarzenegger muscles to the max but that's what happens when you do it. When you excersice you're GOING to feel pain at some point, this also applies to singing.
@nddlj No you're not an idiot at all.. that's a nice way to look at it. I agree that as long as you sound good that's all that matters. But that only applies if you're singing Pop or Rock songs though. If you're singing like Ballads, Opera.. you can't be straining your throat, you have to sing nicely and relaxed. Notice when you watch Pop singers or Rock bands you see how their face react to the song and you see veins on their neck.. that's because they're straining it.
@nddlj continue... for me I don't want that, you have to sound good and look good at the same time. It's just this video that confuses me, that says on the other video we WANT tension, but this one says we DONT want tension. I'll prolly take their some of their advice but I don't want tension nor straining at all.
@popups46okay Yeah I agree...because pop singers don't sing through their diaphram it's all in the throat. I guess it's just practice and watching Youtube videos on how NOT to strain your voice when singing that will help us not only to sound good but to feel good when singing.
I don't think you should be feeling a whole lot of pain when singing those hard notes so, in my opinion, no pain is better than pain :)
my notes keep breaking, whether its a lower note or higher, i cant stop breaking. There's no tension, and i dont scream hard, but when i want to apply more volume, it just cracks. Its frustrating, what can i do?
Is it just me, or do there coaches talk about the problem, and never show how to fix it???? I have watched a lot of these videos, and have not gotten any answers.
@tonkin4christ you have to book a lesson, that defeats the purpose of promoting the site if you get the remedy to a vocal fault on a free video. Also, ever voice it different, and a remedy for a vocal fault may be different for one tenor with a large voice versus a tenor who has a light small voice, etc...
i cant seems to relax my throat..even my falsetto is pulling "chest".been like that for years..went for speech level singing, during warm up with the teacher, even when i am pulling,he asks me to continue to go higher but im squeezing very hard already. He said that because need time to allow the good habits to come out but if during warm up, i am still using bad habits, how is it possible for the good one to come out??
may be to much compression in vocal chrods, or u have polyps or something go to doctor vocal choach and maybe u have reflux who knows or maybe you THINK that u are doing it relaxed but u are not.
hey, thnx this helped alot.. usually i'd get this tension and i thought that it was because i was trying to hard or something but now that i actually relaxed that area I'm not getting that anymore. ^_^ thnx for posting!!

What kind of range? "Raw range" or the highest mix one can achieve? I'm a lighter baritone, I can reach Ab5 in a mix thanks to this program, if that means anything to you.
